Max navigated through the bustling mutant underground base, realizing that it had grown significantly in size. The hall teemed with activity, with people hurrying about their tasks on various floors. As Max searched for Sonia, he spotted Lorna approaching with a serious look on her face.
"Max! You're just in time; I was about to track you down," Lorna exclaimed.
Curious, Max inquired, "What's going on?"
Lorna shared the unsettling news, "The situation is getting tricky. Sage intercepted intel that the Sentry Secret Service is gearing up for a massive attack on a mutant base housing hundreds of individuals."
Perplexed, Max questioned, "Any idea why?"
Glancing around cautiously, Lorna replied, "Haven't you been out lately? The mutant population has surged, and underground organizations are thriving. The government and the Sentry Secret Service feel threatened, leading to indiscriminate mutant arrests."
"That explains the increase in people here," Max remarked.
Lorna outlined their plan: "We've discussed it and decided to intervene. Every mutant we save counts. You're coming with us, but this time, there's no pay involved."
"Alright," Max agreed, considering the debt he owed Lorna and the opportunity to test the effectiveness of his developed ability.
Curious about the mission details, Max inquired, "When are we setting off?"
Lorna revealed, "Two hours from now. It's just you, me, and John."
Max nodded, relieved that he had armed himself for this outing. He then inquired about Sonia's whereabouts, wondering aloud, "Where's Sonia?"
"Sonia's downstairs checking the supplies. Did you manage to succeed with the soul gate?" Lorna replied.
Max acknowledged, "I'll find out soon."
Making his way to the basement, Max discovered Sonia engrossed in counting supplies. The base's growing population had strained their resources, and Eclipse's contribution in maintaining connections with gangs proved crucial in procuring supplies.
"Sonia," Max called out, drawing her attention.
She smiled and said, "You're here. What can I do for you?"
Max requested, "I need your help. See if your ability works on me."
Excitedly, Sonia asked, "Did the soul gate work?"
Max grinned, "Let's find out."
Sonia approached Max, gently placing her hands on his face. A soft sigh released a pink smoke that enveloped Max. After a moment, the smoke returned to Sonia, who leaned into Max's arms.
Concerned, Max asked, "Are you okay?"
Sonia, now nestled in Max's embrace, replied, "All good."
Sonia gently shook her head, a playful smile dancing on her lips as she congratulated Max on his success. "Congratulations on your triumph! Your soul's fortress is impenetrable to my power."
Max, feeling a mix of excitement and accomplishment, responded with a simple "Great." Despite his hunch that success was on the horizon, the real achievement left him buzzing with excitement. The past three months of hard work had paid off, eliminating a significant vulnerability to those with spiritual abilities.
Unable to contain his joy, Max instinctively wrapped his arm around Sonia's waist. The weak but happy smile on Sonia's face mirrored his excitement. Unable to resist the moment, Max leaned in to kiss her.
Just as the atmosphere between the two grew more heated, a sudden "Boom!" startled them. Sonya, blushing, quickly untangled herself from Max's embrace. Their attention was drawn to Lorna, standing at the door with a serious expression.
"The situation has changed, and we need to start right away," Lorna announced, her tone firm. Without waiting for a response, she turned and left.
"I'll go ahead," Max said to Sonia, who looked at him with concern. "Pay attention to safety!" she urged.
Max nodded, exited the room, and found a truck ready outside. Lorna was already seated inside. John motioned for Max to join, and soon they were on their way.
Max, curious about the abrupt change in plans, asked Lorna, "What's wrong? Why the early departure?"
Lorna, her expression serious, replied, "The Sentry Secret Service is on the move."
Concerned, Max probed further, "What's bothering you?" Lorna hesitated, then confessed, "It's okay, just a little worried." The air in the truck became charged with a mix of tension and anticipation as they headed towards the unknown.
