“Okay.” I turned back to the kid. “You must be hungry.” I always had been at his age. “Go take a leak and wash your hands. We’ll get some dinner, and then I’ll take you home.”

The kid’s eyes were cautious. “That’s kind of you—”

“I’m not kind. Anyone’ll tell you that. What I am is the best, and no one gets to you except through me. And believe me when I tell you there won’t be anything left of them if they try that.”

Trevor stifled a laugh behind his hand, and I scowled at him.

“If you say so, Mr. W-Vincent. But I really can take care of myself.”

“Uh-huh.” I felt a surge of pride, which I concealed. He wouldn’t be my kid if he couldn’t.

“You’d better go now, Mark. I’m sure this young man could do with a Big Mac.”

“And fries and a Coke?” The kid’s eyes lit up, and now he looked like an eleven-year-old should.

“And apple pie too.”

“You remembered.”

“I always do.”

“Gee, thanks!” He rushed into the bathroom.
