Sonia sensed Curt's attention. The moment Sam and Alexi took their seats, she could breathe easy. She was aware of the exact moment the Colonel left the mess hall, drinking in his presence in stillness.
Sam pulled a face, drawing her attention back to his plate. She smiled as she darted back to her love. Curt paused at the door. She got the impression he wanted to look back before he disappeared.
Iron sharpens iron: they both had to steel themselves, had to work at it and stand firm. They would get through this separately. They had no choice.
"You certainly care about him, don't you?"

"Yes." His open concern arrested her and gazed at the food that became tasteless.
"You know nothing can happen?"
"Yes, I know," Sonia answered, painfully aware of the facts.
"Oh, come on Alexi, why not?" Sam piped in.
"He is married, Sam," Alexi said gruffly.
