Chapter 88: Bernadette
Alice's body suddenly froze.
The voice came from right beside her. The female demigod had approached without Alice noticing. People in the crowd passed through them as if they were invisible. Even the tour guide didn't realize someone was missing as they led the remaining visitors out of the exhibition hall.
The next group entered, still not noticing Alice and the demigod. A new guide naturally led the new visitors, who wandered around the display cases, oblivious to their presence.
As the next group was about to leave, the female demigod spoke again: "Why aren't you saying anything?"
Alice slowly turned to face her. The demigod's gaze fell on Alice, her face obscured by a thin veil. Alice couldn't discern her emotions from just her eyes.
Alice remained silent, only certain that the demigod before her had no immediate intention to kill her.
...What did she want then?
"You seem very familiar with these items," the female demigod continued. "Love poems, novel manuscripts, basic textbooks... even games that weren't widely circulated."
Alice met the demigod's gaze, trying to keep her voice steady: "I... I just greatly admire Emperor Roselle..."
Her voice trailed off under the demigod's scrutiny.
It was a poor excuse. The demigod calmly asked, "Do you even believe what you're saying?"
Alice fell silent. Considering that the demigod hadn't harmed her yet, only trapping her here, she tentatively asked in Chinese: "Are you also...?"
The demigod's expression showed she didn't understand. Alice paused, then tried again in English: "Are you also...?"
Still no change in the demigod's expression. She asked, "What do those two sentences mean?"
Alice opened her mouth but didn't know how to explain. She realized this person wasn't a transmigrator, but seemed very interested in these items. Could it be...?
Alice suddenly thought of a possibility and hesitantly asked, "Do you know someone familiar with these things?"
The demigod's expression changed.
Her demeanor was no longer calm. Her voice became tense with suppressed emotion: "What does it mean to be familiar with these things?"
The demigod's gaze grew heavy, her fluctuating emotions causing her deliberately restrained aura as a demigod to leak out. Alice's face paled once again.
Alice realized this must be Bernadette, Emperor Roselle's daughter. She decided to be tactful and not reveal certain embarrassing details about Roselle that she knew.
"In a sense, he could be considered a predecessor to me and others like me," Alice said carefully.
"Predecessor?" Bernadette repeated, confused.
"A predecessor who nearly blocked the path for those who came after," Alice added cryptically.
"What do you mean by 'others like you'?" Bernadette frowned. "And what do you mean by 'nearly blocked the path'?"
Alice explained: "There are others in this world besides me and him who would recognize these items. As for blocking the path... don't you think many of his works don't seem like they were written by the same person?"
Bernadette was taken aback.
"Works reflect an author's thoughts, personality, experiences. Some say a work contains the author's soul," Alice continued. "Do you really think all his works were written by him alone?"
"...I don't know," Bernadette finally replied. "I... I never thought about it that way."
"You admire him like most people do, right?" Alice asked with a sigh.
Bernadette's gaze wavered. She neither nodded nor shook her head.
"He loved you very much," Alice said softly. "Those widely circulated notes he wrote during his lifetime were actually diary entries - you knew that, right?"
Alice decided to leave out certain embarrassing details to preserve some of the Emperor's dignity in front of his daughter.
