The man before me was sweating, anxious, and about to blow my cover before I could even start my first day.
I stood with the rest of the new employees and transferees as we were introduced to the Vice President for Operations.
The man knew exactly who I was and his gaze kept darting at my direction.
I guess next time I hosted a meeting I needed to make sure that everyone knew that they were to be discreet.
"Do you think something happened recently?" I heard one of the more senior members of the operations department whisper to her companion.
"Maybe the CEO wasn't happy last week," someone answered. "I heard a ton of employees got fired and arrested."
"Damn," the first one hissed.
"But it could also be cause of her." I just knew they were pointing at me.
"The pregnant woman?" someone asked.
Yup, definitely me.
"Why would she be a concern?" the initial person asked.
