It had been a long time since Angelus had worn the clothes of the laity - even longer since he rode a horse. Doing both on the same day seemed surreal - almost dreamlike.

What was even more disorienting was seeing Praefectus Diego do the same.

They had ridden hard the first day, to get out of Lucinova as quickly as humanly possible, Angelus assumed, before allowing themselves a break for food and rest. Still, every action they took, Diego made sure it was done with haste and resolve. For a while, Angelus remained quiet, following obediently the orders of his past master - feeding the horses, gathering water from babbling brooks they had passed along the way.
