Capítulo 56: Does Anyone Really Know How to Cheat Fate?

The dense forest seemed to grow darker as David ventured deeper, following the frantic gray sable. The creature darted through the gnarled roots and thick underbrush, occasionally glancing back to ensure David was keeping up. After a short trek, the pair came upon a hollow formed by the twisted roots of an ancient tree. Inside, two smaller white sables were huddled together, their tiny bodies trembling with fear.

David knelt down, his heart sinking at the sight. These creatures, usually so lively, were now scared and subdued. The gray sable rushed to comfort them, but David knew they couldn't linger. With a reluctant glance, he motioned for the gray sable to lead the way deeper into the forest.

As they pressed on, the air grew heavier. The chirping of insects and rustling of leaves had vanished, replaced by an eerie silence. David's eyes scanned the surroundings, noting the faint scorch marks and signs of magical combat etched into the trees and ground. Someone had been here, using potent spells, yet their restraint suggested a desire to avoid detection.

A glint of silver caught David's eye. He crouched beside a bush, its leaves glistening with a silvery liquid. Unicorn blood.

He froze, his pulse quickening. The blood had a faint metallic smell laced with a strange sweetness, a temptation that seemed to whisper in his mind. Drink it, and you'll gain immense power.

Shaking off the thought, David pulled out a handkerchief and quickly wiped his fingers. He knew all too well the cost of such power: a cursed, half-life existence. Newt Scamander had warned him about this, urging him to protect the unicorns at all costs.

"Hold on," David whispered, his resolve hardening. The blood trail grew thicker as he pushed forward, shimmering like a chain of silver droplets. Small animals had gathered around, licking at the blood. David shooed them away, casting repelling charms to keep them from returning. The unicorn was still alive, but for how long?

After a while, the gray sable abruptly halted, cowering behind a tree. David peered past the trunk, his breath catching at the sight before him.

A magnificent unicorn stood in a clearing, its pristine white coat marred by a deep gash on its hind leg. Silver blood streamed from the wound, pooling on the ground. The creature trembled, its wide eyes locked on a figure in the shadows—a wizard cloaked in black.

The man was frail, hunched over as though burdened by his own weight. But David wasn't fooled. The oppressive aura surrounding the figure made the air feel thick and suffocating. This was no ordinary wizard.

David swallowed hard. If this was Voldemort, he was far weaker than the legends described—but still far beyond David's abilities. He had to act fast, but recklessly rushing in would be suicide. He needed a distraction.

With a flick of his wand, David conjured a horse-shaped water monster, a shimmering illusion designed to mimic a second unicorn. It materialized nearby and began galloping toward the black-robed figure.

The wizard straightened, his frailty vanishing as he turned to face the illusion. David's heart sank. The man's movements were sharp and deliberate, a clear sign of his mastery over magic. He raised his wand, and without uttering a word, blasted the illusion apart with a powerful spell.

David barely had time to react as another curse came hurtling his way. He dove behind a tree, the ground where he had stood moments before erupting into splinters. This wasn't just a fight—it was a massacre waiting to happen.

But he couldn't give up. The unicorn was still alive, and as long as it was breathing, there was hope. David conjured another illusion, this time a giant eagle, and sent it soaring toward the wizard. Simultaneously, he unleashed a three-headed dog from his magical guidebook, directing it to flank the dark figure.

The black-robed wizard smirked, easily deflecting the attacks. Yet David noticed something peculiar—his movements were almost too precise, as though he knew what was coming before it happened.

David gritted his teeth. He's predicting my moves... How?

Then it hit him. The dark wizard wasn't just reacting; he was anticipating every spell, every step, before it even happened. It wasn't a matter of skill alone—there was an eerie foresight in his actions.

David's mind raced. Wait. I can do that too.

Flipping through his magical guidebook, he found the page for the invisible beast. Among its abilities, the creature granted the user a brief glimpse into the future—a few precious seconds that could change the tide of any battle.

David's heart pounded as he activated the ability. The world around him seemed to blur for an instant, and then he saw it—a vision of the wizard's next move. He was going to cast a wide-area explosion spell, aiming to catch David and the unicorn in one blow.

"Not today," David muttered, raising his wand. The second the wizard began his spell, David was already moving, conjuring a shimmering shield to absorb the blast. The force of the spell sent him staggering back, but he remained standing.

The wizard froze, clearly startled that David had managed to anticipate his attack. A flicker of frustration crossed his face, but David wasn't about to let him recover.

With his newfound foresight, David unleashed a flurry of spells, each one carefully timed to exploit the wizard's momentary hesitation. He created a dense fog to obscure the unicorn, giving it a chance to flee, and followed up with a blinding flash of light to disorient his opponent.

For a moment, it seemed to work. The black-robed wizard faltered, his attacks growing less precise. But David knew he couldn't keep this up for long. His strength was waning, and every second felt like an eternity.
