Capítulo 3: The Cage Fight (1)
Night fell upon the city of Welles. It was a peaceful yet bustling night, with the stars above illuminating the streets of the city despite the fierce competition from the lit up storefronts and buildings. Illuminating globes of different designs dotted the face of the city, making the streets as bright as day.
In the unassuming building Gareth had been in since he left his home in the morning, now had its front door as busy as any bustling market. The crowd of people from all walks of life gathered at the door, jostling with all their might to enter the building.
Inside the building, a large stage had been set in the center of the wide space, with seats arranged in tiers all around it. The building that was deserted and quiet in the morning now had a crowd so large one would find it hard to have a place to join in. Still, the crowd kept increasing, and everyone of them eventually got a seat. The scene almost seeming like magic.
The room where Gareth had found Moses and the others in the morning now had more members sitting within at their own tables. The place was no longer quiet, as people made hearty conversations. The droning sounds of different conversations drowning each other out, so much so it was hard to pick out what was being said sometimes.
Gareth was currently sitting at a table with Moses, Lisa, Janet and Peter. There were others sitting at tables near them, sometimes joining in on their conversations and the other way round whenever there was an interesting topic being discussed.
The night was still young and there was still some time before Gareth's fight began. However, Gareth was sure of one thing as the night went on. If he actually died this night, it definitely won't be from the maw or claws of some beast. It instead would likely be from being teased too much by these people. They sure weren't giving him a break at all.
Hell! Janet even had to bring up her overly dry joke about the flowers. Not that he would ever say that to her beautiful face. The teasing and all were in good spirit anyway, and it was anything far from being unusual.
Gareth had joined this establishment a few months ago, when he arrived in the city. He had been invited here on a night like this to watch the matches, by one of the groups he travelled with on his journey to this city. This being a new experience for him, he had been captivated by the exciting and potent atmosphere. The bloody fights between the challengers and the beasts. He was more so entranced by the fights between the awakened. Awakened humans against awakened beasts. Those fights to Gareth, were so powerful.
It wasn't that he had not been in a fight with beasts before. This was something common on his journey to the city, traveling through the forests and over the mountains. There were beasts everywhere in the wilderness. But, maybe it was being locked together with the beast and having nowhere to run. It somehow felt different to Gareth. Although, it might lack the element of surprise that was characteristic of the wilderness, it was not without its own charm.
He had not hesitated to sign up and join the establishment. He had put in his all, and found an exciting world where he learned new and unexpected things. He learned as fast as he could, and the veterans in the trade took a liking to him. He learned from them tips and tricks that were game-changing, and in the past few months he had been crowned as the newest rising star of the arena.
The matches went on as time passed and Gareth's match which was the finale for the non awakened category would soon begin.
"Alright, Gareth, I would like to see you come back here in one piece." Peter said, patting him on the shoulder.
"I will be sure to. I still have a kiss to receive from someone."
Everyone in the room laughed at this, the only exception being Janet. She had gotten herself into this situation after all.
As the night went on and more matches were fought, the atmosphere in the room became more subdued. The number of people in the room had decreased over time as only a few of those that went on the stage had been in a good enough condition to return here. Most of them had to be treated by the healers in a separate room. And since not everyone was as tolerant of pain as Gareth to still be capable of walking around with such wounds, they were having a good and well-deserved rest at this time after their great exertions.
Finally, the time came for Gareth's turn on the stage. He stood up from the midst of his well-wishers and left the room under their cheers and encouragement.
Not long after, he appeared in the sight of the crowd. In that moment when he was spotted, there was dead silence. However it was just that, and it was drowned out by a resounding cheer from the crowd. It was so loud that it was deafening, making the momentary silence from earlier appear like it never occurred.
This was a no less than expected welcome befitting of the newest rising star. His popularity with the people was so high that it was unbelievable. They had become addicted to his crazily exciting and incredibly intense matches to the extent they not only liked him but also developed a type of insane belief in him that he could do almost anything. Just like in this situation, where others had questioned his sanity over this match, they simply never bothered about it. It was not that they did not care, it was just that in their hearts and minds they were very sure that he would not only give them an exciting match, he would also come out alive and kicking.
With that belief they had in him being so strong, he made sure of it in his heart not to betray that belief. He took slow and steady steps as he walked to the stage, and it was not long before he reached there. The cage dropped down from above and the five beasts that he was challenging this night were released upon the stage.
