100% End of the Age: A World Reborn / Chapter 9: Tracing Shadows

Capítulo 9: Tracing Shadows

The faint glow from the server room's screens lingered in Emilia's mind as they moved through the labyrinth of the facility once more. They had a plan now, fragile but promising, and with every step, that hope solidified. If they could find the Quiet's core, they could stop it before it consumed everything.

But their task was monumental, and time wasn't on their side.

Aaron's condition had worsened, the wound draining his energy, though he still trudged forward without complaint. Lena's focus was split between guiding them and monitoring the faint signals she was tracking from the Quiet. Every now and then, she'd stop, frowning at her device as if trying to make sense of the chaos.

Emilia scanned the environment, her senses on high alert. The facility was eerily quiet, save for the occasional creak of metal or distant rumble from whatever creatures roamed the complex. The Quiet's influence was everywhere, distorting the air itself, making everything feel slightly…off.

"What's our next move?" Aaron's voice broke the silence, hoarse but steady.

Emilia glanced at Lena, who was staring intently at her handheld device. "We're tracking the Quiet's core, right? So where does it lead?"

Lena sighed, her brow furrowed. "It's erratic. One moment, I get a strong signal from the east, but it fluctuates. It's like trying to catch a shadow. This thing isn't just moving it's adapting, shifting its presence constantly."

Emilia clenched her jaw. She had expected this. The Quiet wasn't going to make their mission easy. Still, they had to try. "We keep moving until we get a solid lead. It's the only way."

They continued deeper into the facility, following Lena's intermittent readings. The halls grew narrower, darker, as though they were being swallowed by the Quiet's influence. The air felt heavier, making it harder to breathe, and Emilia noticed small signs of distortion creeping along the walls. The Quiet wasn't just mutating organisms it was warping reality itself.

After what felt like an eternity, Lena stopped in her tracks. "Wait—there's something." Her fingers tapped rapidly on the device, eyes widening. "A signal. Stronger than before. Northwest, two levels down."

"That's something," Aaron muttered, pushing himself forward with renewed purpose.

Emilia led the way, navigating the narrow staircases that took them lower into the facility's depths. The air grew colder, and the sensation of being watched became more pronounced. It felt like the Quiet was aware of their presence, observing them, learning from them.

As they descended, they found signs of destruction—twisted metal, shattered glass, and the remains of the facility's automated defenses, melted and warped beyond recognition. Whatever had passed through here was no longer human.

"Stay sharp," Emilia whispered, gripping her weapon tightly.

They moved cautiously through the wreckage, the flickering lights casting strange, distorted shadows on the walls. Every sound seemed magnified in the oppressive silence.

Then, they saw it.

At the far end of the corridor, something was moving. It was hard to tell in the dim light, but it was large, almost serpentine, its form shifting and writhing as if it were composed of liquid shadow. The Quiet's corruption had taken full form.

Lena gasped, quickly pulling out her scanner. "It's close. That thing—it's guarding the core."

Aaron gritted his teeth, gripping his side where his wound throbbed painfully. "And here I was hoping we wouldn't have to fight anything."

Emilia stepped forward, her voice firm. "We don't have a choice. We need to get to that core."

The creature moved, undulating like a living fog, its form blurring the line between organic and ethereal. It had no eyes, no clear features, yet Emilia felt its gaze fix on them. For a moment, everything went silent, the only sound the pounding of her own heart.

Then it lunged.

The speed was unnatural, and Emilia barely had time to react. She threw herself to the side as the creature crashed into the ground where she'd been standing, the impact sending shockwaves through the floor. Aaron and Lena scrambled back, taking cover behind a twisted metal beam as Emilia readied her weapon.

"Go for the weak points!" she shouted, though she wasn't sure if the creature even had any.

The fight was chaos. The creature moved like smoke, slipping through their attacks and reforming faster than they could land a solid blow. Its body was both solid and incorporeal, shifting between states as it lashed out with tendrils of shadow that threatened to overwhelm them.

Aaron fired a shot, the bullet passing harmlessly through the creature's shifting form. "This thing's not playing fair!"

Lena, crouching behind cover, furiously tapped at her scanner, trying to get a fix on the core's signal. "We need to distract it! The core's close I can feel it!"

Emilia dodged another attack, her mind racing. The creature was too fast, too unpredictable. They couldn't afford to keep fighting like this.

But then an idea struck her. If the Quiet's creatures were adaptive, maybe they could outsmart it.

"Lena! Can you feed false data into the Quiet's system?" Emilia shouted, her voice strained as she barely avoided another attack.

Lena looked up, wide-eyed. "I might be able to. But I need time."

"Do it! Aaron and I will keep it busy," Emilia said, gritting her teeth.

Aaron nodded, pain etched into his face, but he didn't back down. Together, they unleashed a barrage of attacks on the creature, each one buying Lena precious seconds. The creature was relentless, but Emilia could sense its confusion, its form faltering as it struggled to adapt to their unpredictable assault.

Lena worked quickly, her fingers flying over the device. "Almost there…"

The creature let out a sound—a low, guttural hiss that reverberated through the air. Its form grew more erratic, its attacks slower, less precise. Emilia could see the strain, the momentary weakness.

"Now, Lena!" Emilia shouted.

Lena slammed her hand down on the device. The screens flickered, and for a brief moment, the creature froze, its entire body convulsing as if it had been struck by lightning. Emilia didn't hesitate. She charged forward, weapon raised, and aimed for the center of the creature's mass.

With a roar, she brought her weapon down. The creature screeched, its form unraveling in a swirl of shadow and light. For a heartbeat, everything was still.

Then, with a final hiss, the creature disintegrated, its body collapsing into wisps of dark mist that vanished into the air.

Panting, Emilia stood over the spot where the creature had fallen. "Is it…gone?"

Lena slowly stood, her eyes wide with disbelief. "It's…disconnected. We've severed its link to the core."

Aaron limped over, clutching his side. "So that's it? We're done here?"

Emilia shook her head. "Not yet. The core's still active. We've just cut off one of its defenses. We need to finish this."

Lena checked her scanner again, her expression grim. "The core's close. We're almost there."

Emilia glanced at Aaron, his face pale but determined. "Can you keep going?"

He nodded, though it was clear every step was costing him. "I'll manage."

"Good," Emilia said, her voice steely. "Because we're not stopping until we end this."

They pressed on, deeper into the heart of the facility, where the Quiet's presence was strongest. Every step brought them closer to the core, and with it, the chance to finally stop the Quiet before it consumed the world.

But Emilia knew the worst was yet to come.
