Capítulo 2: Chapter 2: The First Temptation

Emma stared at the message on her phone screen as if she were standing at a crossroads. The words shone with uncomfortable clarity:

"Hi, I'm Ana. I'm looking for someone to help me with a delicate situation. I'll pay you $2,000 for a simple encounter with my husband. You don't have to do much, just flirt a little and make him fall into the trap. If you're interested, contact me."

Two thousand dollars. The amount made her heart skip a beat. It was more money than she'd ever had in her hands at one time. With that, she could pay her rent for several months, cover some bills, and ease the burden her mother had carried alone since her father left them.

"I shouldn't do this." The thought crossed her mind like a persistent whisper, but desperation drowned out any trace of reason. She knew it was risky, even dangerous, but at that moment, the money seemed like the only way out.

Sitting in her small room, where books piled up on her desk competed with the endless list of tasks her academic life demanded, Emma felt cornered. The numbers on the bills piled up in her mind like an invisible prison. What had once been a financial inconvenience was now an anxiety that haunted her every night, keeping her from sleeping.

Her finger trembled over the screen. She had to decide. Accept or reject.

"I'll just look," she told herself for the millionth time. Yet, she knew it wasn't that simple. Ever since Carla had shown her that app, Emma's life had changed. Her worldview was no longer as clear as it used to be. What had once been black and white was now tinged with shades of gray, making her question her own morals.

"It's just flirting..." Emma thought, trying to convince herself. She didn't have to do anything more if she didn't want to. Just a few words, a few smiles, and it would be done.

With a sigh, she lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. Could she really do this? She felt that the decision she was about to make wouldn't just affect her wallet, but something much deeper within herself.

"You've already signed up, you've already taken the first step," she reminded herself. Emma knew her life wasn't easy. Every time she looked at her mother, she saw the exhaustion in her eyes. That exhaustion wasn't just from work, but from the burden of keeping her daughter in college, of maintaining a home. And Emma couldn't fail. She didn't want to be another burden.

"This is for us..." she murmured softly, trying to convince herself.

One more message. Just one. If she didn't feel comfortable afterward, she would back out. That was the promise she had made to herself.

She opened the chat in the app and began typing:

"Hi Ana, I'm interested in learning more about what you need. I want to understand the job better before committing."

She sent the message before doubt could trap her. The knot in her stomach tightened instantly, but there was no turning back. Now all she could do was wait.

The minutes dragged on exasperatingly slowly. Each second seemed to stretch longer than she could bear. She was about to turn off her phone, unable to handle the anxiety, when a new message lit up the screen.

"Hi Emma! I'm glad you're interested. Don't worry, it's very simple. My husband, Carlos, is out of the country for work but returns this weekend. I just need you to go to a bar where we usually go. He's weak when it comes to young, pretty girls. You don't have to do anything more than approach, talk to him, and make sure he's interested. I'll pay you half upfront if you agree."

Emma swallowed hard, feeling the weight of the words. It was so easy, so straightforward. But also so dirty. "Manipulating a married man…" She wondered if he really deserved it. But after what Carla had told her about how common this was, she started to rationalize it. "If he falls for it, it's because he was going to anyway."

"I'm not the bad one," she thought, trying to convince herself as she read the message over and over again. The reasons began piling up in her mind. The need for money. The exhaustion of always being the good girl, the one who never did anything wrong.

"Sometimes life doesn't leave you a choice…" she whispered to herself softly.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she wrote a response.

"I accept. When and where?"

Ana's message arrived quickly.

"This Saturday at 8 pm. I'll send you the details of the bar and the advance payment tonight. Thanks, Emma. I know it's hard, but you'll be fine."

Emma put the phone aside and felt her heart pounding in her chest. She had done it. She had accepted. Now, all she could do was wait… and try not to drown in the guilt that was beginning to take hold in her mind.
