In front of them, Nadya could see a crowd and this crowd seemed to be comprised of merchants just like her who had come here to buy the cement that was being advertised. There were also ordinary people among them who were also fascinated by the cement and they wanted to buy at least a bag. However, there seemed to be a problem.
Nadya and the boys came down from their horses and joined the crowd.
Clearly, from where Nadya was, she could see the valley very well and even where the crowd was standing was a part of the valley.
The valley stretched as far as the eyes could see and if one needed to cross the valley to reach the cement plant, they would have to descend down there and travel for almost a kilometer before they crossed the river and climb towards the steep terrain to reach the cement plant.
The nature of the terrain was what made the knights to stop anyone from going to the cement plant. Where the crowd was, there was a banner that showed clearly the official opening of the cement plant which was on the early month of October.
"Please go back. Pollow cement factory has yet to open its doors but once it is opened to the market, you can come here and buy as much cement as you want." Igor Belkin said politely to the crowd. Igor was the knight who was given the job of ensuring that no unauthorized person was found going to or getting near the cement factory. After all, the bridge to the cement plant had yet to be built. Virtya need to build the bridge first before he could initiate the selling of cement.
Currently, the cement from the cement factory was being stored in the storage house of the factory while some of it was being sold in bulk and used to construct the apartments and the bridge.
This bridge would cost one million gold coins because it would run from the west part of the valley towards the east.
One should know that from western side of the valley to the east, it was close to 1 kilometer which would force Virtya to construct the bridge of the same distance.
Of course, this bridge would pass over the Salto river which was 40 metres wide and currently, the workers were building the pillars of the bridge stretching from the riverbed.
Definitely, the pillars that would support the bridge would be so tall to enable the bridge to be on the same level as the upper surface of the valley.
First, the workers constructed caissons on land before they were floated into position where the flowage force of the river was favourable, then, the caissons were gradually sank unto the riverbed. After this part, the water was expelled from the caissons to give access to the floor of the river bed where the workers had to dig holes and then a web of steel beams was erected before it was enclosed with a steel sheet formwork.
Next, the workers had to pour down the concrete to make the pillars. Of course, a series of winding a twisted channel steel in the concrete was done to make the concrete uniform and if there were imperfections after the formwork was removed, the workers had to correct that.
Clearly, it was not just in the river alone where these columns were being erected it was also on the muddy terrain as the workers were needed to dig holes in the mud until they reach to the hard rock where they then start the construction of the pier from there. These pillars were so tall in that there were even several 25 metres tall pillars at a certain place.
By October, this bridge was expected to be completed so that it could reduce the cost of transporting both the raw materials and the cement from the west of Pollow to the east.
However, the dangerous terrain of the valley didn't stop the workers from carrying the raw materials to the cement plant and it was these workers who were also fetching the cement from the factory to the site of the ongoing construction of the apartments at the eastern side of Pollow.
Virtya was only selling cement in bulk to the merchants and the dukes who attended his party and he would only allow the sell of cement to other people after the construction of the bridge was completed.
