The annual cherry blossom festival had turned the town into a pastel dream. Julian Hayashi's hands tucked into his pockets, wandered through the bustling streets. Pink petals floated around him, carried by the soft spring breeze, but he felt strangely detached despite the beauty. Crowds of people passed by, laughing, and taking pictures, but Julian's mind was elsewhere.
He made his way to the riverbank, seeking a quiet spot away from the noise. With its gentle flow of water and canopy of cherry blossoms, this place had become his refuge. As he approached, he noticed someone sitting in his favorite spot. A girl with bright red hair, her back to him, was sketching the scenery of the flowers and rivers flowing.
Julian paused, unsure whether to interrupt her. But as if sensing his hesitation, the girl turned around, her eyes meeting his. "Hey," she said, with her friendly voice.
"Uh, hi," Julian replied, awkwardly scratching the back of his head. "Mind if I sit here?"
"Not at all," she smiled, patting the grass beside her.
He sat down a few feet away, close enough to see her drawing. The page was filled with delicate lines capturing the cherry blossoms and the flowing river. "That's good," Julian said, impressed by her art.
"Thanks," she replied, glancing up at him. "I'm Scarlet, by the way."
"Julian," he replied. They fell into a comfortable silence, each absorbed in their thoughts. Julian stole glances at her, curious about the girl who seemed so at ease. Something about her drew him in, but he could not figure out what.
As the sun began to set, Julian finally stood up. "I should get going," he said reluctantly.
Scarlet looked up from her sketch, a hint of disappointment in her eyes. "Yeah, me too. Nice meeting you, Julian."
"You too, Scarlet." He gave her a small smile before walking away, his mind still lingering on the encounter. That night, as he sat at his desk, he found himself writing in his journal for the first time in weeks, inspired by the red-haired girl by the river.
