CHAPTER EIGHT
Instantly, I took the opportunity of my paws returning to ram them into the Fox's eyes. Claws sunk into the thing's eyes, and I tried not to scream or gag. Oh my god, gore. The fox staggered away, and now I had half of my legs - about up to the knees for a human - of white fur at my disposal. Betting my life on a battle move I had seen in the books, I swung under the fox and clawed at its underbelly, then pushed myself against the ground and safely rolled out from under the fox, leaving it dashing, wounded, into the bushes.
"Loser! Imagine getting clawed by a cat!" I yelled after it, bathing in the glory of my victory. But now it was time to look at the collateral damage - and boy oh boy was it some damage.
Shadow was uselessly grasping for breath, broken leg in an awkward position, and had a bad scratch on his back. Gently, I took my previous spot right next to him, my tail thumping against the ground as I eagerly felt warmth return to my body. Now, Shadow's leg was a bit of a blip in my plans, especially since that fox wasn't supposed to show up. "I suppose I should set it in place before the leg heals - because if the bone reforms like that…" I didnt finish my thought, staring at the weird shape of Shaodow's leg. I had to set it. Shadow didn't even seem conscious, which was a good thing for me.
A bit slowly at first, I nudged the bone back into place, using my own (strictly unbroken) leg as a sort of reference. Within a few minutes, the bone and the scratch were both healed. Now, Shadow was going to wake up any minute, so I was going to have an excuse ready.
On cue, Shadow blinked awake. He opened his eyes and instantly saw me, but didn't say anything. Awkwardly, I said, "Uhm, I happened to pass by." Let's get that out of the way first. Shadow didnt reply to my statement, only asked, "Did you save me again?" ??? I don't know. I was only making sure my meal ticket didn't get crumpled or ripped. Also, dude, I'm your fan, believe it or not.
Without thinking, my dumb brain blurted, "I'll always save you." Shadow blinked, and I instantly closed my mouth. Oops. That sounded like a revolutionarily cheesy opera line. "Uhm, I mean, I won't stop pestering you until you join me, so you should spare yourself a headache," I said, taking the time while I was alive to groom myself. After all, after Shadow rejected me a second time, I'd have to lurk in the shadows again until he eventually crumbled against my charms ~. Shadow was still looking at me.
"What, am I that pretty?" I said playfully, still busy making my fur perfect. Then, Shadow asked another question. "Why do you like me so much? All I've done is be rude and refuse you. Isn't my brother better?" His voice hitched on the last line. I accidentally bit down on my fur in suprise and swallowed a few stray strands, bursting into a series of hacks.
Right! Shadow did have a big inferiority complex compared to Onyx, even though I was heavily biased towards Shadow. As I coughed up the last bits of fur, I burst into laughter. "Nope, Shadow, I like you more than Onyx. I don't want anything to do with that absolute zero son of a gun." I said brazenly. Shadow looked at me, flabbergasted.
"B-but isn't Onyx's darker fur better…"
"Nope, Ive seen way too many black cats, it's so boring. Plus, everyone thinks black cats are bad luck, and that ratface brings meaning to that idiom. He's a walking disaster. I like your fur color more, it's unusual for a dark plum to exist."
"Aren't his eyes brighter and more beautiful than mine?"
"Ew, what's wrong with your taste? His eyes look weirdly like LED blubs, no way."
"But, I'm a coward who doesn't even have the heart to move away from his clan…" Shadow looked at his paws.
"Uhm, It's not your fault they exiled you. I would have gone insane if everyone was that biased too. You didn't run away from the fox, even though it was certain death. And caring about your clan isn't cowardly at all, even though I would have abandoned those suckers and moved away a long time ago. I'm not such a saint to care about people who don't do the same." I snorted.
Shadow looked down. "So I'm wrong." He said, and I rolled my eyes. "Nope, you're just a better cat than me. How about it, though? Can you please join?" I asked, and Shadow looked at me. "How do you always know exactly what I want to hear?"
"Because you're my favorite cat in the world, Shadow ~~ I'm biased," I said playfully, rolling over on my back. I could feel the ground! And rocks, as they painfully poked my back! And the morning breeze as it ruffled my fur! Thanks, meal ticket!
Shadow tilted his head and then looked away. ~~~ Blushing ~~~ I purred, laughing, and delighted. Shadow said, quietly, "I'll follow you to the ends of the world."
