Capítulo 1: Azaleas Introduction

The rain was pouring hard, but all she could do was stand there staring into the forest ahead. Piercing red eyes stared back at her, and a feeling of hopelessness overcame her. Her arms crossed as she stood there shivering - the rain dripping down her nose. "Azalea!" Naomi, her best friend, yelled. Azalea came to and snapped back to reality in an instance. "Naomi, did you see him?" Azalea asked. Naomi turned to look into the forest. "See who?" Naomi asked. Azalea turned to look for those piercing red eyes she had seen staring at her, but no one was there. "It must have been a branch or something Azalea," Naomi said. Azalea wanted to believe her friend's words, but this feeling of hopelessness made her question that. "You must be freezing, Azalea; you forgot your jacket," Naomi said, handing her jacket over. Azalea put on the coat and then looked at Naomi. "Let's go back to the house," she said. Naomi nodded in agreement, and they both started walking toward the house.

After a long walk back, the two girls went inside the small, broken-down cottage home. The smell of chicken soup overcame them as they walked inside. "Mom?" Naomi said, looking around. "In the kitchen, dear," Naomi's mother replied. They both walked into the kitchen. "Azalea dear, you are all soaked," Naomi's mother said, handing her a dry rag. "I am sorry I was walking by the forest," Azalea explained. A frown crossed Naomi's mother's face. "By the border of town?" She asked. Azalea's heart started to race. She knew that she would get scolded if she responded with a yes. The edge of town where the border lies is a forbidden place to go, and Azalea knew that. Naomi's mother sighed. "I guess I know my answer, Azalea; you know that it is forbidden, you troublesome girl," she said in a scolding tone. Azalea looked down and then apologized. "I am sorry, Andrea." Naomi's mother, Andrea, shook her head in disappointment. "Your mother will be very disappointed to hear that her daughter was making trouble again."

Naomi's mother stood tall and firm, and her long brown hair covered most of her face. Her dark brown eyes looked back at Azalea. "Go get dried off and head home," she said. Azalea nodded and then headed into the small bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror. She remembered the piercing red eyes staring at her from the forest. "Azalea, hurry up in there!" Andrea shouted. Azalea grabbed a towel off the rack and quickly wiped herself down. "I am sorry I got caught in my thoughts," Azalea said, running out of the bathroom. Andrea frowned and poured a bowl of the soup she had made. She then covered the soup with a rag and handed it to Azalea. "For the road," Andrea said. Azalea smiled, took the soup, and then ran out the door.

It felt as if she had been walking for hours even though it had only been a couple of minutes since she left her friend Naomi's house. Tears fell down her eyes as she looked at the bowl in her hand. As she was walking, she spotted a bench. "Maybe if I rest, I will feel better; I still feel so hopeless," Azalea mumbled. Azalea took a seat on the bench and started crying. Her blonde locks covered her face as tears rushed down her face. She felt so stupid. "I should have never gone to the border," she said.

The bowl of soup that Andrea had given her fell to the ground, and the bowl shattered on the gravel road. "Are you ok?" a man's voice said to her. Azalea slowly started to look up and saw black boots standing in the mud pile in front of her. She looked at him and saw beautiful blue eyes looking back at her. "Who are you?" Azalea asked in confusion. "I am Ryder; who are you?" he said. Azalea hesitated to answer since she did not know who this man was. "Are you afraid of me?" he asked. Azalea looked down. "I am Azalea," she responded. "Azalea, the name of a flower, how perfect," he said, a rose appearing in his hand. "How did you do that" Azalea asked? "Do what?" Ryder smirked, handing her the rose. "You made this appear; how?" Azalea asked again. "Azalea, remember this; some things are better left unsaid," he said, disappearing right in front of her. Azalea's heart started racing, and millions of thoughts and questions began running through her head. Did she see things? Who was that? How did she make this rose appear? In all of her confusion, she collapsed. In the very last moments of her eyes being open and her being aware, she saw a man with piercing red eyes looking down at her, and then she awoke.
