56.75% Antagonist's Dilemma: Unbidden Netori / Chapter 21: Yandere system

Capítulo 21: Yandere system

An open courtyard filled with beautiful decorations, laughter, and chatter set the scene for the party. Meanwhile, there I was, trying to blend in and look as inconspicuous as possible, hiding behind a tree.

*Taps on the shoulder*

I turned around, already suspecting who it was. Standing there was Emily Walton, her expression unreadable, but her presence commanding attention.

"Ah, if it isn't Miss Emily. Good day to you," I greeted, turning fully to face her. "I was just admiring this beautiful plant," I added, pointing towards the nearest decorative shrub with an awkward smile, hoping my casual demeanor would mask the tension I felt.

"Those are called yellow carnations," she replied, glancing down at the plant I had pointed out. "In the Victorian language of flowers, they symbolize sadness and rejection," she added, looking back at me with a calm expression, her eyes revealing no hint of her thoughts.

Of all the flowers to point out, I had to choose that. And why would anyone display such a flower at a pre-wedding ceremony?

"I see," I replied, striving to maintain a composed demeanor. "So, how have you been? I think the last time we saw each other was about four months ago," I added, trying to steer the conversation away from my awkward comment.

"It was three months and seventeen days ago," she corrected me quickly, her tone steady. "You dumped me through a text message," she added, her eyes narrowing slightly.

Not knowing how to respond, I turned to face the courtyard, letting the silence hang between us for a moment.

Questions swirled through my mind in a disorienting haze. *Who am I? What am I doing here?* I wondered. *Who do I think I am to be caught in such a situation?* I thought, feeling overwhelmed. I was just an average Indian, skilled in a bit of math but nothing more, nothing less. The weight of it all was almost too much to bear, and I felt on the verge of breaking down.

"I'm sorry if my comment made you uncomfortable," she said, her voice carrying an apologetic tone. "I tend to be terrible at expressing myself properly."

'Bitch, then don't say it; I was on the verge of leaving you mid-conversation,' is what I wanted to say.

"It's okay," I said, eager to steer the conversation in a different direction. "By the way, I recall your father mentioning he wasn't planning to retire soon. What brings you here?"

"I heard you might attend, so I booked a flight for myself and Bernard to meet you," Emily replied, her expression remaining impassive.

One of the reasons I dreaded meeting Emily was her inscrutable expression. I couldn't tell if she was happy to see me or still upset about the breakup. It made navigating the conversation incredibly challenging, leaving me uncertain about her true feelings.

"I see, well, I actually went to school here in Japan," I replied, trying to steer the conversation into more neutral territory.

"Oh, is it Kaisei Academy?" she asked, her expression remaining unreadable as ever.

"It's just a regular public school nearby," I replied, keeping my tone casual.

Considering my family's background, I should be attending one of the most prestigious schools in the country. However, due to the game's settings, I had to enroll in a public school.

"Then in that case, I should—" Emily began, but was interrupted mid-sentence by my mother calling out to me.

Not wanting to prolong the conversation any further, I abruptly excused myself and made my way towards my mother's location.

Emily didn't make any attempt to stop him; she simply stood there and watched him leave. After he was gone, she sat down, gently plucked the yellow carnations Eric had pointed at, and walked away with them.

'System, what is this dual system and what is a Yandere system,'

[A Yandere system is initiated when the host pursues a female, elevates her affection to its maximum, and subsequently gives her the cold shoulder.]

'Are its functions necessarily bad, or is there more to it?'

[The system will categorize various types of yandere, assess their danger levels, and provide methods for handling each one.]

'Wait, there are more than one type?'

[There are precisely eight types.]

'Oh, that's a lot... So does the system have a display window like the others, or...?'

[YANDERE SYSTEM

AKARI REI (Clingy)

Danger level: Yellow

Maintenance: LOCKED (Can be purchased in system shop)]

'So, the methods you mentioned need to be purchased?'

[Correct, the system shop will be updated shortly.]

I knew it sounded way to good.

'Also what does yellow mean?'

[The danger zones are classified into four stages: green, yellow, red, and black, with black being the most dangerous.

If properly managed, individuals can be kept in the green zone most of the time; however, it is crucial not to ignore any quests that have reached the red zone.

Maintaining one or more quests in the yellow zone for a certain duration can earn various rewards.]

*sigh*

How did it come to this? I had already planned my future, and now you're telling me I have to maintain relationships just to avoid getting killed. How can life be so unfair?

"Mother, I'm feeling a bit unwell, so I'll be heading back first," Eric said, approaching his mother with a dejected expression still lingering from his encounter with the new system.

Emiko quickly turned to her son, interrupting the conversation she was having, and placed her hand on his forehead to check his temperature.

"Sorry, ladies, I'll be heading home first," Emiko said as she bid her farewells and congratulated the couples on their wedding.

Eric was a bit surprised and touched by her actions but didn't say anything. In his previous life, he had six siblings and never truly felt his mother's love in action.

'Well, it is nice to have someone care for you,' Eric thought as he left the party with his mother.
