Capítulo 7: Kate - Secret Circles

‘I’m sorry Cathy, sweet things have been making me throw up lately.’ I apologized. Cathy was here as promised. She had come earlier than expected but just in time to catch me disposing of her cake. Just the thought of eating the cake had me nauseous last night, I could not return it since that would have been rude, so I thought I would trash it. How embarrassing.

‘I should have known’ she smiled it off. ‘Don’t worry about it. It was just cake.’ She said ‘A cake I spent precious time on but who cares right,’ she said as she brushed past me and headed into the apartment. Guess she was offended.

I followed her in and watched as she stopped abruptly, she was looking at the mirror she sat in front of when I was cleaning her mark a few nights ago. She had covered her neck with a black scarf, she had a yellow bow in her hair and had on a yellow dress that flowed freely from her waist to her knees. Cathy was taller than your average girl, a little on the curvy side yet somehow she gave off an aura that seemed to say “Please protect me.” It must have been her face. Full, dimpled cheeks that seemed so open to smiles. Even now as she was plainly annoyed with me, she did not seem menacing.

‘Would you like some coffee? I make really good coffee’ I asked when our eyes met in the mirror.

‘So I heard. As revenge for not taking my cake, I will not take your coffee.’ She said while turning to face me, as if challenging me to convince her otherwise.

‘Fair enough, miss petty.’ I said with a smile as I went to sit on my bed, she sat by the dressing table and looked at me. ‘So, coffee library?’ I asked

‘Oh yes, that is why I came here. The coffee in the library. I feel like we need a better name, don’t you think so’ she asked.

‘I don’t care really, I just want to do something.’ I sad while reaching for a pillow to put on my lap. I was trying to hide my tummy.

‘The Library?’

‘Sounds like we were too lazy to even think about it.’

‘But we are. The Coffee hub?’

‘Sounds fake.’

‘Coffee room?’

‘Why did Jack suddenly agree to let me sell coffee?’ I ask before she could suggest another name.

‘Why are you pregnant and on the run?’ she asked in return.

‘Who marked you like that?’ I asked and I could tell she was losing patience

‘How far along are you?’ this was going nowhere. ‘Who is the father of your baby? Where are you from?’ she kept asking.

I was not willing to answer any of her questions, neither was she willing to answer mine so we merely stared at each other. I would not succumb to this little pressure.

‘You know,’ I started, ‘Jack came here last night. He did not ask questions, but he said mean things to me. I do not expect an apology but you coming here feels like one.’ She merely raised her eyebrows as if expecting me to continue. When she saw that I would not say anything more she turned back to the mirror and raised her hands to the scarf.

‘I cannot say if this is an apology or not, but the first thing jack told me the moment he got home was to help you with this so. I do not know why he agreed to this either’ She said as she slowly unwrapped her scarf hen set it down. The mark looked so little compared to the wound that I had seen two nights ago. Neat, it looked neat.

‘My mate marked me, I met him in the woods at our campsite. I do not know what his name is. He is currently in the dungeon.’ Only after she was done did I realise that she had answered my questions.

‘That was not very informative.’ I said

‘That is not my fault, I answered to the best of my ability. Your turn.’ She said

My turn to open up.

‘Coffee Room sounds good. I am three months and two weeks pregnant. For the rest of the questions, I’d rather not say.’ I replied and pulled the pillow closer to me as if to protect my baby. I would not tell my life story to a princess that I would leave behind in a year

‘I see. I answered your questions as a show of faith. I will share you my secrets so you do not feel too vulnerable when you need to share a part of yourself with someone.’ She said and wrapped the scarf around her neck. I wanted to tell her that her mark looked really neat, that I envied her, that I desperately wanted a mate’s mark since it meant ultimate security, but obviously I couldn’t. So Instead I asked about the coffee room.

‘How will we even get people to come here?’ I asked

‘Oh that, we just have to say it is opened. It was closed down a while back.’ She said as if that explained everything.

Cathy proceeded to clarify. The library was owned by the family. It had be closed down five years ago when they wanted to renovate it and to add new books to the collection. However before they could reopen in, there had been an accident which claimed the lives of their mother and father. The library had been a gift from their Father to their Mother, no one had wanted to mess with the memories so they all left it closed until I came here.

This was a special space. Yet Jack had let me stay here, now he was letting me bring in a coffee idea.

‘Do not stress about it, this is money for Jack. The more customers show up, the more he makes money from lending books.’ She said after noticing that I was worried.

What had I expected? Royalty treatment? This family had not accepted me into their home but it had given me the best that it could. Jack had complied with all of my wishes ever since he met me and he had only me of one thing yet all I did was try to judge him for hiding me.

Ungrateful, selfish. I was an ungrateful brat. I would apologize the moment I got the chance. Just as I was about to apologize to Cathy for not answering her questions properly, her phone rung. She went outside to pick it up. When she got into the house a few minutes later she looked so shaken, clutching the little phone so much I thought she would break it.

‘They found out who my mate is, they said I should go see him if I wish.’ She offered me the explanation.
