Amy:
"I am so happy I took that route to the hospital. I wouldn't have found you other wise." Benedict pulls my chair out for me and I thank him quietly as I take my seat. He grabs the chair closest to mine and sit in it. He's still smiling at me like a Cheshire cat. Did he inhale laughing gas? Or smiling gas maybe? I fiddle with my sleeves awkwardly.
"I'm creeping you out, aren't I?" He asks when I don't look up at him. I raise my head and shake it but stop when I study his face again . The scar is still MIA.
"What happened to your scar?" I can't hold the question back anymore. His
brows furrow at me in confusion.
"What scar?" He asks me just as the waiter comes up to us to get our
order. I swallow my reply.
"What will you like to get?" He asks me and hands me the menu. I bite my cheeks in contemplation before ordering an omelette with a glass of
orange juice. He gives his order to the waiter as well before he leaves us.
"So Amy, what have you been up to?"
"Just nursing school." I shrug and his chuckles at my shrugging shoulders.
"I know that of course. I mean after the tragedy with your father." Of course he knows now and he really is my mystery man.
"It has been a rough couple of years but everything is starting to fall back into place for me. I mean after I lost my mom a few months back, I met my friend and she kind of brought me out of a really dark place." I don't want to give him
more details. His warm hand cover mine on the table.
"I wish I was there with you." He says.
"You do?"
"Yes. After that day, I was in an accident with my brother. The next few months after that was just hectic. But when I got my life together again, I looked for you. For more than a year."
"You did?" Why do I keep giving two words questions? I'm just surprise.
Why would he look for me?
"I could not just get my mind off you. The pain in your eyes that day. The way you felt in my arms. I should not have left you alone at the park." The waiter comes back with our food but we don't touch it even after he leaves.
"You did more than what any stranger would have done. Your help did keep me going during all those troubled times. Thank you." I say sincerely.
"Don't thank me. I should have done more. Or at least taken your number
to check up on you." He says. I pull my hand from beneath his and put it on his to squeeze it lightly.
"No. You did more than enough. Thank you Ben." Why did I call him Ben?
Uggh isn't it improper to call your professor something like that. He looks
surprised when I say his name and I wait for him to berate me. He only gives me one of his smiles I'm beginning to think is part of his personality.
"Ben. I like how that sounds on your lips." His other hand comes on to trace
lazy circles on my wrist. My eyes notice the time and I pull away. I'm going to be late. Surely he won't be smiling by then.
"I should go." I start to stand but he frowns lightly.
"You did not even touch your food." He says. I look down at both our untouched food.
"Touchè." I grin at him and he smiles again.
"I'll have the waiter pack both of them." He waves for our waiter and gives him instructions while I stand idly counting the time away.
"I want to do this right this time." He says when the waiter leaves to get bags for our meal.
"You do?" Still with the two words questions Amy? Classic babe.
"Yes, I do. I'll start by taking your number. Your phone, please." I hand him my phone without question and he types his digit into it and save it as Ben
before calling it.
"Now, I have your number." He waves his phone at me.
"So, I'll love to see you soon. Maybe dinner. At my place. I make a mean Pasta."
"Your place?" I chew nervously on my lips.
"Just for dinner and maybe a movie or two. I'll get you home before 10:30. Pretty please." He pouts at me and I laugh lightly.
"See it as your way of thanking me. You know, for being a firm chest to cry on, all those years ago." He says and I nod slowly.
"Yes! You won't regret this Amy, I promise." He says and I hope I don't. I
have a date with the man I've been fantasizing about for ages. The same
man I've been crushing on since I saw him recently. Yay?
****
I get to class a few minutes past 9 thinking of how Mr Benedict will react to seeing me again in class. I poke my head in to check if he's already in. The
class is buzzing with conversations and Mr Benedict is nowhere to be seen.
"Hey, Amy!" Gabriel comes to grab me into the class and I gladly follow him. He takes me to a group of guys with a girl hanging on to one of them.
"So Amy, these are my friends. Charles, Paul and Simon. And that's Simon's girlfriend Ella. They are inseparable." He whispers in my ear, loud enough
for everyone to hear. The girl slap his shoulder lightly before pulling me into a hug.
"Hi I'm Daniela. You are the newbie who Mr Benedict chewed out yesterday right?"
"That will be me." I laugh lightly.
"Damn was he hot, spitting fire like that. I like my guys dark and broody. The happy ones bore me." Ella fans herself and the guys laugh especially Simon who wounds his hand around her waist.
"Speaking of Mr Benedict. Is he usually this late?" I ask Gabriel.
"He's normally here before any one of us. Maybe he has something he's tending to." I grimace hoping I'm not the reason he's late. After much debate within myself, I shoot off a message to the number he saved on my phone earlier.
I'M SORRY IF I MADE YOU LATE.
A few seconds after I send the text, the class goes quiet and I pull my head off my phone to see Mr Benedict just walked in. I notice he's wearing a
different shirt. When did he get the time to change clothes?
"Good morning guys. I'm sorry I'm late but I had a few things to settle this morning. Bringing me to the reason I'm here now." He doesn't spare me a glance while he talks.
"This is the last time I'm going to be in this class." He drops the bomb and his eyes settle on me. My heart jumps in my chest.
"Gabriel, distribute the test papers to everyone." Gabriel leaves my side to
take the papers from him. They talk in hush tones for a few seconds, while the class chatter noisily. Everyone is probably guessing why Mr Benedict is
quitting and so am I. Is this concerning me? I startle when I hear my name
being called.
"Hey, you're called." Ella tap my shoulder and I look up to the front of the
Class.
"My office. Now." Oh no, he doesn't look as happy as he seemed when we had our nonbreakfast.
