"Do you understand what we just did?"
After thinking for a while, Charles bent his head and wrote on his notepad, a single word, "CLAP."
"Good," Grace said. "But it means more than just clapping.
"Do you want to know what else it means?"
Charles nodded eagerly.
"Alright, I'll tell you."
Grace held out one of her fingers again. "You see this finger, when I used it on my palm it made a sound, right? "
"When I increased it to two, the sound was louder and better, right? And when we got to five, it was far better and you could even use it to make music."
Charles understood to that point but what he didn't get was where his nanny was actually going with this.
"Now, let's say that your one finger represents Mr Roy, your teacher. If only Mr Roy is doing something good for you, it is good."
"But if I become the second finger and join Mr Roy in doing good things for you, won't it be better?"
