XephiZ Remember the Chinese traditionally place heavy emphasis on clear, pale skin. Dark skin is a sign of low birth/someone who works with their hands outside, like rice farmers.
I'm also guessing that the author didn't know that the 'other side' of the Andes for much of its length is basically desert. The mountains stop the rain from coming in off the ocean!
