41.17% The NBA's Twilight Star System / Chapter 14: Choosing an Agent

Capítulo 14: Choosing an Agent

Thump, thump, thump.

The sound of a basketball hitting the hardwood echoed from a private training gym. Inside were just two people: Jay Sun, drenched in sweat as he practiced, and Eve, a blonde girl in athletic wear who sat nearby.

Jay had originally reached out to Eve, asking if she knew of any suitable private gyms in the area where he could train. Not only had she helped him find a spot, but she also volunteered to be his ball retriever.

At first, Jay felt too embarrassed to accept her help and even offered to pay her. But Eve dismissed the idea, jokingly requesting only one thing in return: dinner after every training session.

And that's how Jay ended up with a free ball girl.

With the draft looming, Jay had a clear plan: train, secure an agent, and prepare for team workouts.

His training had been paying off. Over the past few days, his stats had noticeably improved, especially after his NCAA championship victory. The Gary Payton template card was nearly fully integrated, and Jay guessed it wouldn't be long before he could unlock his next card.

But the biggest surprise came the day Jay won the championship.

His system had buzzed.

At the time, Jay couldn't check it, but later that evening at home, he finally got the chance.

Ding—

"Congratulations, host, on winning the NCAA Championship. The system has unlocked the Champion Module. Please claim your championship reward."

Champion Module? Jay quickly opened the system's description, his curiosity piqued.

Champion Module: When the host wins a championship, the system awards badges based on the league's level.

Jay's NCAA title had earned him one Gold Badge Draw, but because this was the first time unlocking the module, the system upgraded it to a Purple Badge Draw.

"A purple badge?!" Jay was ecstatic. "Let's do this... wait! Gotta wash my hands first."

Returning moments later, Jay started the draw. The screen flashed rapidly before gradually slowing to a stop on a purple badge.

Closer (Purple): In the final quarter, all stats increase by 20%, and stamina regenerates by 30%. (Also applies during overtime.)

Jay was stunned. He had expected a powerful badge, but this?

"All stats boosted by 20%?!" Jay's three-point shooting, already an 80, would rise to 96. "I might not be Curry, but I could definitely go toe-to-toe with Klay!"

The stamina regeneration was equally game-changing. Jay's endurance, while sufficient for NCAA games, would undoubtedly be tested in the NBA. Now, he wouldn't have to worry about running out of gas.

With his biggest hurdle—stamina—resolved, Jay briefly toyed with the idea of staying in the NCAA for another year to chase another championship and potentially earn a gold badge.

But after careful thought, he decided against it.

First, he was at the peak of his momentum, with scouts still showing interest. Second, staying another year didn't guarantee another championship. In the NBA, winning a championship could mean earning another purple badge, but that was a long-term goal for after his rookie contract.

So, Jay chose to declare for the draft. He threw himself into training, determined to fully integrate his card and make an immediate impact in the NBA.

Midway through a training session, Jay's phone rang, interrupting the rhythm of his dribbling. He wiped his hands, answered the call, and after a brief exchange, informed Eve that he needed to step out and she could head home early.

After Eve left, Jay packed up and walked to a nearby café where he had arranged to meet with a prospective agent.

Jay was currently considering two options:

Jeff Austin, the agent for stars like Steph Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo.Bill Duffy, who had previously represented Yao Ming.

While Jeff Austin's agency boasted a stellar track record, Jay had only met with one of Austin's assistants, not Austin himself. It wasn't a snub, but it signaled that Austin's interest in Jay wasn't particularly high.

Today, Jay was meeting with Bill Duffy, who had personally reached out to him.

As Jay entered the café, he spotted a man waving at him. Jay approached with a polite smile and extended his hand.

"Hello, I'm Jay Sun."

"Nice to meet you, Jay. I'm Bill Duffy."

"Wait—you're Bill Duffy?" Jay asked, surprised and slightly flattered.

"Yes, the one and only," Duffy replied with a warm smile. "I was the one who called you earlier."

"Oh, I see. Apologies, Mr. Duffy. I thought I'd be meeting with one of your assistants or associates," Jay admitted sheepishly.

"Not at all, Jay. Meeting with you personally is part of my job—and a sign of respect," Duffy said sincerely. "I've watched your games and believe in your talent. Not many people realize how remarkable it is for a player with such a short basketball background to achieve an NCAA championship and earn the MOP title."

Jay couldn't help but feel flattered. After all, who wouldn't enjoy hearing a successful professional praise them?

Duffy continued, "Jay, I'm genuinely interested in representing you. I believe this partnership could be a great fit. I've worked with Chinese players before, which means I can help you navigate some of the challenges you might face. With me as your agent, you'll avoid a lot of unnecessary headaches."

Jay was impressed. Duffy's experience with Chinese players was indeed a significant advantage.

However, Jay didn't commit on the spot. He thanked Duffy and said he needed time to consider his options before parting ways.

Back home, Jay lay in bed, mulling over his decision.

Should he sign with the high-profile agency of Jeff Austin or go with the experienced and personable Bill Duffy?

Just as he was about to drift off to sleep, his phone buzzed.

It was a call that would ultimately help him make up his mind.
