Capítulo 5: Chapter 5: The First Test
I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I knew the city would be full of threats, enemies who would come looking for Klaus and expecting him to be the ruthless, unrelenting force they feared. But I couldn't afford to let that happen—not yet. Not until I had a better grip on this new existence, on the power that coursed through my veins.
But the city had other plans for me.
It wasn't long before I encountered the first test of my new life. The sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway, and I turned just in time to see a familiar figure entering the room.
Elijah.
The elder Mikaelson brother. The one who had always been the calm, calculating presence in Klaus's life, the one who had tried time and time again to temper Klaus's worst impulses. He was here. And if there was anyone who would be able to see through my facade, it was Elijah.
"Klaus," he said, his voice as calm and measured as ever. "I've been looking for you."
I stood tall, forcing myself to project the same authority that Klaus had always held. "Elijah. What can I do for you?"
His gaze flickered over me, and I could see the subtle shift in his expression. He was studying me, trying to assess the situation. I could almost feel the weight of his scrutiny, like a knife cutting through the layers of pretense I had built around myself. He could sense something was wrong. But whether he could put his finger on it, I didn't know.
"I'm worried," Elijah said quietly. "You've been… distant. And that's unlike you. You've been hiding something."
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my composure. "I'm fine. Just… adjusting to some things."
Elijah raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "You and I both know that you don't 'adjust' to things, Klaus. You control them. But you've been avoiding your responsibilities. Our family is in turmoil, and you've been absent."
I could feel the weight of his words pressing on me. Klaus had always been a master of controlling his image, of hiding his true feelings beneath layers of arrogance and authority. But now, it was different. I was different.
"I'll handle things," I replied coolly, trying to regain control of the conversation. "In my own way."
Elijah's eyes narrowed, and I could tell he wasn't convinced. He could see through the cracks in my facade, but he wasn't pushing me—yet.
"You're not Klaus," he said after a long silence, his tone more speculative than confrontational.
I stiffened. The words hit harder than I expected. I'm not Klaus.
But the truth was, I wasn't. Not in the ways that mattered. I had Klaus's power, his name, his legacy—but I was something else. Something new. Something untested.
"I'm still figuring things out," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Elijah studied me for a moment longer, then nodded. "I understand. Just remember this—our family doesn't trust easily. But we're still your family. And whatever you decide, I will stand by you."
I swallowed hard, the weight of his words settling in. He didn't know what I had become—or what I was still trying to become. But I could sense his loyalty, his bond to Klaus, even if that bond had always been complicated.
I wasn't sure if I was ready to live up to that loyalty, to the expectations of the family who had always known Klaus as their leader. But for now, I would have to navigate this delicate balance—between who I was, who I used to be, and the power that was now mine.
