16.66% I Can Only Contract Lowest Level Pets / Chapter 4: Abilities and Restrictions

Capítulo 4: Abilities and Restrictions

Ao Xing was excited for a long time and only calmed down when someone came to pick her up.

After her departure, Yang Feng sat there for a while, gazing at the night sky.

Finally, he took a deep breath and pulled out the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex.

The book had returned to its original form—dull gold with dark borders, its cover cracked in several places.

According to the codex, its black form was a feint, an illusion meant to mislead others.

Yang Feng tried to open the book, but it didn't budge. After five minutes of struggling, he sent a thought to the codex through his connection.

You can't open me yet.

A female voice responded, making the sentence feel… wrong.

(Author: Young man, stop reading forbidden content on the net.)

Yang Feng quickly shook off the errant thought and asked. "You said you have many abilities, right?"

Yes.

"Then, what are they?"

Then let me tell you about my features.

I have two passive abilities and one active ability.

The active ability is that: there is a small world between my pages, which you can access with a thought. This world can accelerate the evolution of all living beings.

I've already told you about my first passive ability: your affinity to nine elements and their variations. It's more of a side effect than an actual ability, but who cares.

The last ability is that you can contract a new pet every time you advance a level.

Yang Feng was only surprised by the first two abilities, but when he heard about the last one, he was stunned.

One has to know knew that celestial relics—the highest-ranked relics—only allowed a Beastmaster to contract a maximum of five pets while lower-tier relics permitted only three.

(Beastmaster relics, or relics in general, can be of three ranks namely: Verdant Relics, Arcane Relics, and Celestial Relics.)

Now, here was a someone telling him, he could only contract a new pet with each advancement.

There were nine levels known to Yang Feng, so did that mean he could eventually contract nine pets if he reached the highest level?

But before he could fully process this, the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex spoke again.

As you know, everything comes in pairs.

These abilities come with some restrictions.

To use the small world inside me, you will need to provide energy in the form of energy crystals, the blood of powerful creatures, or spiritual objects.

Yang Feng sighed in relief. If he could become a Beastmaster, obtaining energy wouldn't be a problem.

Beastmasters had strong earning ability. Just the corpses of beasts can be sold for sky high price and the currency used by Beastmasters are energy crystals.

(Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex: You wish.)

The Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex continued:

Because you have an affinity for all nine elements and their variations, you may encounter conflicts between different types of energy. You'll need to balance them yourself. I can't help you with that.

Yang Feng had read about energy conflicts between elements.

Many creatures had multiple element attributes, which often led to conflict in energy.

For example, Dark Angels, also known as Fallen Angels, were leaders of dark creatures with dual-element attributes—light and darkness. To resolve the conflict, they abandoned the light element.

There were also Marsh Crocodiles, originally possessing both water and earth attributes. To avoid energy conflict, they fused the two and mutated into marsh crocodiles.

For Yang Feng, who would eventually have access to all elements, the challenge would be a thousand times more difficult.

Still, he decided to face it when the time came.

At that moment, the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex spoke again, its voice dripping with amusement:

As for pet contracts... Heh.

Yang Feng felt a bad premonition and could sense the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex's gloating tone.

You can only contract wild-line creatures.

In shock the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex slipped from Yang Feng's hands, but before it could hit the floor, it floated back up and hovered in front of him.

His mind went blank. He felt as though someone had pushed him off a cliff into a glacial river, pulling him down to the freezing depths.

Yang Feng's body trembled, and despair clouded his eyes. His vision blurred with tears.

After everything was said and done, he was just a sixteen-year-old youth.

A youth with dreams of becoming a great Beastmaster, only to be told that he could only contract lowest-tier pets.

As Yang Feng spiraled deeper into despair, the codex's sarcastic voice echoed in his mind:

Are you stupid? I said my small world can help all living beings evolve. What are you afraid of? Can't you just evolve your pets with my help?

Of course, the perquisite is equivalent exchange.

Yang Feng came back to his senses and felt as if he had caught a lifesaving straw.

He fell silent for a long while.

It was well past midnight now. Yang Feng gazed out the window, lost in his memories:

He remembered his father's death while protecting him and his mother from the dark beasts.

He saw his mother working tirelessly to provide for him.

He remembered her weary smile, always assuring him that she would stand by him no matter what.

He thought of Ao Xing's sweet smile.

As he thought of Ao Xing, a tender smile appeared on his face involuntarily.

He took a deep breath,

"I can't admit defeat," he whispered. "I can't let myself drown in despair. I've been given this opportunity—how can I waste it?"

"So, what if I can only contract low-level pets? It doesn't matter, as long as they can evolve."

"So, what if there are difficulties?"

"Will it be worse than death? Worse than losing everything?"

"Worse than losing Xing'er?"

Yang Feng spoke the words while increasing his voice with every sentence.

As if telling the Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex, but in reality, it was to remind himself of his determination.

With each declaration, his resolve grew stronger.

He picked up the hovering codex and spoke, his voice steady, "So, you can really help evolve my pets?"

Yes.

"What's the limit?"

As long as you can provide resources, the sky's the limit.

Yang Feng asked a few more questions about the codex. Some it answered, others it refused.

He learned that, in addition to known classification of Creatures which are wild-line, Verdant-line, Arcane-line and Divine-line, there was also a fifth classification—Primeval-line. The Primeval-line was the same as the Primeval Dragon mentioned in the Divine Dragon's Thirteen Transformations.

Suddenly, Yang Feng spoke, a thought crossing his mind:

"Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex… calling you 'Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex' every time feels a little awkward."

The Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex responded, then call me 'Oh Supreme One.'

Yang Feng looked at it with disdain.

The codex was annoyed. You don't know how amazing I am... blah, blah, blah…

Yang Feng rolled his eyes. "How about 'Cody'?"

The Beastmaster's Forbidden Codex—named Cody—trembled and shouted,

Are you serious?! I am [!@#$%^&*(!

Yang Feng ignored the codex's blabbering.

Around 2 a.m., he finally fell asleep.

Tomorrow would be a big day—he needs to contact Mr. Sheng to confirm his admission to the Skyfire Beastmaster Institute.

And most importantly contract his first pet.

Next Morning when Yang Feng woke up due to sunlight.

He found a letter on side table.

Blood drained from his face as he read the letter.
