Capítulo 86: The Supreme Response

[You killed a level 59 Night Elf, Shadow Clown, and gained +30,000 experience points. Due to the large level difference, you received double experience, totaling +60,000 experience points.

Cross-level bonus: Gain +3 skill points and +5 free attribute points.

Additional experience points +50,000.]

Bai Yi gripped the clown's wildly struggling soul with one hand, while the other formed a ball of black energy. Without hesitation, he placed both hands in his mouth.

In this darkened state, Bai Yi instinctively sensed that there would be no cost in devouring the soul of such a powerful being.

The soul trembled as it exploded in his mouth, the clown's negative energy before death causing every pore of Bai Yi's body to hum with satisfaction.

[You devour ultra-high-quality fear. Strength +5, Agility +3, Endurance +5, Intelligence +2. Charm slightly reduced.]

[You devour a high-quality soul. Spirit +2.]

This sensation was intoxicating, a strange but undeniable pleasure spreading through him, and Bai Yi couldn't help but squint in satisfaction.

He hadn't anticipated the ability to overpower a lower gold-level opponent, but this combination had far more potential than he'd expected.

With mental power dissipating and the poison of the mind taking its toll, Barrett had been seriously injured. The bomb continued to affect him, followed by the terrifying melee prowess of the dark side.

There were two critical moments—at the beginning and just before the dark side emerged. Any enemy who underestimated him would fall swiftly.

Never underestimate the enemy in a head-to-head battle. Bai Yi felt confident in his chances of victory, estimating them to be as high as 80%.

Is this really a boss template? The higher the level, the easier it became to defeat powerful enemies.

Suddenly, a sticky tentacle exploded in his face, disrupting Bai Yi's calm.

Without a word, he reached out, pressed the tentacles back, and squatted down to search through the clown's scattered remains. He picked up a ring, a dagger, and a necklace before walking toward the fire in a much better mood.

[You obtain gold equipment: Dark Night Blade, Space Mysterious Ring, Moonlight Necklace.]

It was the same type of space ring that Sunu had given him—a fantastic find.

Meanwhile, in the inner city of Dongwu City...

The city lord, Eric, gazed at the light curtain before him, a smile forming in his elderly eyes. This was the kind of combat prowess a top-tier genius should display.

"Look, he's truly worthy of his SSS-level potential. To defeat someone 15 levels above him, remarkable!" Eric boasted to the figure beside him.

Standing next to him was an old man with white hair and a long beard. His eyes also carried an expression of amazement. "The power of the evil thoughts is certainly formidable, but it's still a flawed product."

"He can fix that, old friend. Why are you here? He doesn't want to go to the capital, and you can't make that decision for him. This was the promise I made to him." Eric's voice was warm, though his tone brooked no argument.

Heidinger sighed in helplessness. "You know that wasn't what I meant. The Sword Master sent me to observe him. If his potential is as great as it seems, when you're no longer able to carry the load, it'll be my turn to open a branch in his stead."

Eric's smile brightened. "Brother, if you wish to come, I'll welcome you with open arms. Dongwu City is yours to command whenever you're ready. I'm growing old, after all. It's a shame..."

Heidinger fell silent, well aware of what Eric was referring to.

Among all professions in this world, mages held the longest lifespans. A gold-level mage could live for up to a thousand years, while necromancers were granted eternal life. By contrast, professional warriors of the same level only lived up to 500 years.

This longevity and combat strength granted mages a revered status, making them the most powerful class in this world. Eric had magical talent, but it paled in comparison to his warrior abilities. Hence, he'd chosen the hybrid role of a magic swordsman, which had proved to be the right choice. At level 77, he stood near the pinnacle of the world, with only legends possibly being his equal.

"Enough of this talk. You can return in ten years," Eric continued after some thought. "By then, I'll no longer be able to protect him. He should be at mid-gold level by then, and you can escort him through the final stretch. There's still hope for the Federation."

Heidinger nodded solemnly. "Alright, it's time for the young ones in the capital to start gaining experience. Some areas may bring troubles, but they're worth the challenge. Don't worry about the Difeng and Lotte families for now. The other two..."

"Try Beiyuan or Nanling," Eric interrupted, grinning. "Some mutation zones won't need such meticulous cleaning. Let them gain more experience."

"Forget it." Heidinger stroked his beard in frustration. "The White Plague caused such a stir in Dongwu that even the council's threats were useless. If not for the Sword Saint's intervention, they might've been here already."

"Keep training the others at the borders." Heidinger sighed, resigned. "You'll see, the council will issue a wanted order for me the moment I take them away."

Eric laughed. "There's no need to worry so much. Think about when we were young, fighting our way out of the blood-soaked seas. Look at him now, alive and well."

Heidinger shook his head. "It's different now. The council didn't mind them experiencing the world, but with the coming miracle and the resurgence of magic power, along with the mysterious Night Roses... There's too much uncertainty. Life and death carry great risks, but with their talents, they should reach gold level regardless."

"We'll wait until they're stronger before sending them abroad for training. Our endpoint will be just their starting point."

Heidinger stood up, pulling two scrolls from his robes. Tossing them to Eric, he said, "I've seen enough. I'll be heading back now. Use these sparingly. They're not easy to make."

Eric smiled warmly, stowing the scrolls carefully. "Why not send them to the black market? They'd be nothing to you."

Heidinger looked toward the horizon with a mixture of disappointment and resolve, before vanishing in a crackle of magic.

Back in Dongwu City...

Bai Yi returned, his body cleaned of the blood stains. He assessed his current strength as being at the normal gold median.

If his opponents didn't know him, he could easily defeat a gold median—or at least an ordinary one. If they were a boss-level threat, he could always call for backup. As long as the old city lord was watching over him, everything should be secure.

Walking into the store, Luo Ning, who had been peeking outside, noticed him and brightened. "Boss, you're back! Here, I've got something for you to drink."

She handed him a bottle of milk, her eyes filled with admiration. Given her expectations, Bai Yi should have been injured, but here he was, perfectly unharmed.

Bai Yi smiled and ruffled her hair. "No need for that. Just drink it yourself. Where's Irene?"

"Irene's asleep. She's been really tired today." Luo Ning pointed toward the backroom.

Bai Yi nodded thoughtfully. "She's probably going through her elven awakening. Let her rest, then. Has any customer placed an order lately?"

"No, someone came in earlier but left, saying they didn't want to disturb the city lord."

Just then, there was a knock at the door. A small goblin stood at the threshold, holding a food box nervously.

"Hello, the dinner you ordered has arrived."

Luo Ning hurried over, paid the goblin, and brought the food inside.

Bai Yi glanced at the meal with mild concern. It was nothing but the basic food of this world—simple vegetables and grains. "Why only this?" he asked.

Luo Ning hesitated, "There's no kitchen in the store... and the food in the inner city is too expensive."

Bai Yi's eyes softened. "I'll take care of the meals from now on. You'll have employee meals every day, free of charge."

Luo Ning blinked, surprised. "But, boss, isn't that a loss for you?"

Bai Yi smiled, his voice kind. "From now on, no more worries. You can eat as much as you want."
