Nights in the Void were cold.
At first, Laura felt incredibly embarrassed, but as time passed, the feeling gradually faded.
After all, they were in an awkward situation, and it wasn't intentional on either of their parts.
Besides, the man hadn't tried to hurt her, even though he had her in his grasp. If he'd wanted to kill her, he'd had plenty of chances.
It was rare to meet someone trustworthy in the Void.
Once she realized this, the uncomfortable warmth of his body next to hers became comforting.
For the first time in three years, the coldness of the Void didn't seem so unbearable. His warm breath even made her drowsy, and she fought to stay awake.
'Don't fall asleep, Laura,' she warned herself, trying to stay awake.
'You're in another man's arms. If he tries anything after Alioth leaves, you're finished!'
An hour passed and Russell heard something strange. Was it... snoring? Her soft, rhythmic breathing confirmed it: the girl in his arms was asleep.
Russell sighed inwardly. She was fast asleep, but somehow that made him feel better. If she wasn't bothered by the situation, why should he be? With that thought, he relaxed and drifted off.
The room was pitch black and silent, with only the sound of even breathing filling the air.
Eventually, after an intense day, Russell's own exhaustion got the better of him and he, too, fell asleep.
When he finally stirred, he felt movement in his arms. Russell's eyes snapped open to a pair of sleepy eyes staring back at him.
The sun was already shining through the cracks in the walls.
For a moment they just stared at each other, her arm over his shoulder, his hand around her waist.
"You're bothering me again," Laura murmured sleepily, her words more instinctive than intentional.
But as her mind cleared, her face flushed bright red. Russell was amused when he realized who she was.
This wasn't just any girl - this was X-23, Laura, the little wolf girl.
She seemed to realize this at the same time, her eyes widening as she quickly crawled out from under the bed and dashed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Russell chuckled and stretched lazily in the morning sunlight.
"Well, running off like that after a night together... how heartless."
With a sigh, he crawled out from under the bed, feeling more refreshed than he had in a long time. He hadn't slept this well in ages.
Leaving the abandoned house, he decided it was time to build a shelter and use the Stark tech he'd brought to try to hack the TemPad.
Luckily, he'd kept one of Tony's reactors for power.
As he retraced his steps from last night, he suddenly heard footsteps in the distance.
Soon he spotted the little wolf girl sprinting away, and when she noticed him, she paused for a moment, then turned to the right and disappeared from view.
"Wait, do I look that scary?" Russell muttered, scratching his head.
He was used to being popular. If he hadn't kept his distance, he didn't know how many admirers he would have by now
But here was Laura, running away for the second time.
Just as he began to doubt his attraction, he heard another sound - this time the roar of motorcycles.
Three rough-looking motorcycles roared by in the distance, with five rough-looking riders whooping and hollering as they chased after Laura. They looked like they were having the time of their lives.
It suddenly clicked: she hadn't run from him out of fear, but because she didn't want to drag him into her troubles.
This realization calmed him down.
And... well, now that she'd led him here...
Russell grinned, his eyes glittering with mischief. "Maybe you can play hard to get, but I can't leave someone in need."
With that, his pupils flashed with fierce determination, and he was gone in a blink, racing to catch up.
