Chapter 138: The Core Soul Fruit
After parting ways with Xue Mei and Lin Fei, Mo Yu set out with Qing Lin towards the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range. His main purpose for coming to Western Wilderness City was to fulfill Master Frank's request, and now that it was completed, he had no reason to linger.
Mo Yu had noticed a hint of affection in Xue Mei's eyes, but as someone dedicated to transcending this lower realm and reaching the Great Thousand World, he wouldn't let himself get caught up in romantic entanglements. Xue Mei was indeed beautiful, with a cold and aloof demeanor unmatched by others, but while the lady had feelings, the young man had no intention of reciprocating them.
As Mo Yu chose to bring Qing Lin along with him, the girl's face lit up with a sweet smile. It confirmed to her that her master still cared deeply for her.
Mo Yu, seeing Qing Lin's happy expression, smiled slightly and then headed towards a nearby herbal store. Today's gains far exceeded his expectations—not only had he successfully crafted the Fire Restraint Net, but he had also gathered some valuable information about the mysterious flame. This left Mo Yu feeling quite satisfied.
After walking down the street with Qing Lin for a while, Mo Yu entered a herbal shop where he purchased some insect repellent and basic healing medicines. In the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range, these insect repellents would prove useful, as dealing with mosquitoes and bugs could be more bothersome than facing a magical beast. As for the healing medicines, they were mainly for Qing Lin, as her strength was still relatively weak and she might need them.
Having prepared the insect repellents and healing medicines, Mo Yu noticed that the sky was beginning to darken, so he decided to set out the next morning. He then spent the rest of the day strolling through the streets of Western Wilderness City with Qing Lin, taking in the exotic sights. Along the way, they bought a detailed map of the Mulan Empire and eventually settled in a high-end inn for the night, with Qing Lin looking very content.
As the night passed, the scorching sun once again bathed Western Wilderness City in its intense heat. Mo Yu emerged from the inn, stretching, and with Qing Lin's help, he got ready for the day. Together, they left the inn and headed out.
Standing at the edge of the city, ready to depart, Mo Yu checked all his belongings one last time. Satisfied, he patted Qing Lin's head and began his true journey through the Mulan Empire.
"Ten Thousand Beast Spirit Flame, here I come!"
After walking a few hundred meters outside the city, Mo Yu glanced around to ensure they were alone. His right hand emitted a faint light, and from the ring on his finger, a massive four-star magical beast, Zihuo, appeared. Qing Lin, seeing Mo Yu summon such a powerful creature as if by magic, covered her mouth in astonishment.
Zihuo, now five to six meters long, was covered in purple crystalline scales. Its fearsome, toothy maw and the purple flames flickering from its wings were all clear indications of its immense strength.
Though Qing Lin had heard that her master owned a powerful four-star magical beast, this was the first time she had seen it with her own eyes. The strongest beast she had seen in Stone Desert City, the one that Xiao Ding and Xiao Li had fought, was merely a top-tier two-star magical beast—nothing compared to the mighty creature before her now.
Despite its formidable appearance, Zihuo did not behave aggressively. Instead, it curiously observed its surroundings, with traces of wild boar meat still clinging to its jaws. When it spotted Mo Yu, any trace of annoyance at being disturbed vanished. Its blood-red eyes softened as it affectionately nuzzled against Mo Yu, recognizing him as its master.
Mo Yu wasn't surprised by the meat in Zihuo's mouth. To make life more comfortable for the beast inside the Mo Shuang Beast Ring, he had provided it with plenty of wild game to hunt and eat fresh. This was just a small pleasure for Zihuo, who enjoyed hunting its meals.
Mo Yu had no intention of keeping Zihuo confined to the ring indefinitely like some beast masters on Shenxiao Continent. If possible, he planned to find a Transformation Pill to help Zihuo take human form earlier. Once transformed, Zihuo would not only be more convenient to travel with, but its cultivation speed would also increase significantly. Mo Yu was curious to see just how powerful Zihuo could become.
However, the Transformation Pill was a seventh-tier elixir, and finding a seventh-tier alchemist in the entire Northwestern Continent would be a challenge. This was a matter that would take time to resolve.
Seeing how affectionate and loyal Zihuo was to Mo Yu, Qing Lin's eyes sparkled with admiration. Her respect for her master deepened—being able to tame a four-star magical beast was truly remarkable!
"Qing Lin, this is Zihuo, my magic companion. Get to know each other," Mo Yu said, introducing the beast to the girl.
"Oh... okay, Master," Qing Lin responded, snapping out of her daze. She timidly greeted the beast, "Hello, Zihuo. I'm Qing Lin."
"Roar!"
As if understanding Qing Lin's greeting, Zihuo glanced at Mo Yu before looking back at the girl. A cunning glint appeared in its eyes, and it let out a friendly growl in response. In its simple worldview, Qing Lin had already been accepted as its "mistress."
Though Zihuo couldn't speak yet, its intelligence was already comparable to that of a human child, and it was beginning to understand human relationships.
Mo Yu smiled and didn't mind Zihuo's behavior. He patted the beast gently, signaling for it to kneel down. Zihuo understood immediately, kneeling and extinguishing the flames on its wings.
"We'll be heading to the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range. Riding Zihuo will get us there much faster," Mo Yu explained as he lifted Qing Lin onto Zihuo's back. Compared to Xiao Yixian's one-star magical beast, Cang Lan, Zihuo was superior in both strength and speed.
After settling onto Zihuo's back, Mo Yu took out the map of the Mulan Empire he had purchased the day before. The Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range was marked on it, located in the empire's far east. With a command from Mo Yu, Zihuo began its journey eastward.
The Mulan Empire was far larger than the Jia Ma Empire, and even with Zihuo's relentless flight, it took nearly half a month to reach the northeastern part of the empire from the west.
Standing on a small hillside with Qing Lin, Mo Yu frowned as he studied the map in his hand. They had been in the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range for over ten days. Concerned that Zihuo's presence might attract unwanted attention, Mo Yu and Qing Lin had chosen to proceed on foot once inside the range.
After ten days of walking, Mo Yu had finally reached the area marked by the flame symbol on the map. However, despite searching the area all day yesterday, he had found no sign of the mysterious flame.
"Why can't I find it? Could it really be in that northern location?" Mo Yu muttered, holding up the sheepskin map with a wry smile.
Over the past few days, he had thoroughly explored the eastern and western flame-marked areas without finding any trace of the Ten Thousand Beast Spirit Flame. It seemed increasingly likely that the flame was located in the north.
"Master, are you really planning to go to the northern part of the mountain range?" Qing Lin asked, concerned. Over the past few days, she had learned about Mo Yu's objective and the information they had obtained from Liu Ye. The risks associated with the northern region, where a sixth-tier king beast resided, were too great to ignore.
"I have to. I need that flame. Although it's dangerous, it's not something I can't handle. Are you scared, Qing Lin?" Mo Yu teased, smiling at the girl.
Mo Yu trusted Qing Lin deeply, which was why he had shared this information with her. His comment was meant to tease her, but Qing Lin took it seriously. Her face stiffened, and she replied with determination, "I'm not scared, Master. I'm just worried about your safety. If you're going, I'll go with you. I'll never let you die before I do."
Though Qing Lin was small, her voice was clear and resolute, her eyes filled with determination.
Mo Yu was momentarily stunned, then smiled apologetically as he patted her head. He turned and began walking toward the forest in the distance.
Under the scorching sun, they walked for nearly half an hour before deciding to take a break. Just as they were about to rest, Mo Yu's expression suddenly changed. He turned his head toward a nearby hill, where he saw a figure stumbling and rolling down the slope, eventually coming to rest a short distance away.
Frowning, Mo Yu watched as the figure lay motionless. Qing Lin, feeling a pang of sympathy, looked to Mo Yu for permission, and then approached the man, pouring some water from a pouch Mo Yu had given her onto his face.
The man slowly opened his eyes under the cool touch of the water, his gaze filled with fear as he saw Mo Yu and Qing Lin. But when he realized they meant no harm, he sighed in relief.
Mo Yu cast a disinterested glance at the man and turned to leave. If not for Qing Lin's kind heart, Mo Yu wouldn't have bothered to help. In the world of Dou Qi, good deeds didn't always result in good outcomes, and often led to betrayal.
Qing Lin quickly tossed two or three more bottles of water to the man before hurrying to catch up with Mo Yu.
"Young master, please wait!" The man called out hoarsely. "Our mercenary team is being attacked by a rival group! We're in a life-or-death situation. Please, can you go to Lannister Town and get help?"
"I'm not interested," Mo Yu replied coldly without stopping. "I don't have time to help everyone in trouble. If you're in the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range as a mercenary, you should have accepted the risks."
"Please!" The man cried out in desperation. "Our leader's daughter is with us. If you help save our team, our Iron Mountain Mercenary Group will reward you handsomely!"
Mo Yu kept walking. Lannister Town, located at the base of the Ten Thousand Beast Mountain Range, was marked on Liu Ye's map. While it housed some mercenary groups, none of them were particularly strong—certainly not enough to offer him anything worthwhile.
Seeing that Mo Yu was unmoved, the man's face twisted with frustration before he shouted, "Young master, we found a 'Core Soul Fruit'! If you can bring help, I'll convince our leader to split the gold with you!"
Mo Yu stopped in his tracks, his figure disappearing momentarily among the trees before reappearing by the man's side, who was now looking at him with wild hope in his eyes.
"Did you say a 'Core Soul Fruit'?" Mo Yu asked, his eyes flashing with interest.
The Core Soul Fruit was no ordinary item. It was one of the few natural treasures in the world capable of enhancing soul power!
To explain, one must first understand the Earth Core Soul Essence.
Earth Core Soul Essence was an extremely rare and valuable natural treasure. For alchemists, it held an almost irresistible allure because it had the power to refine and strengthen the soul!
The original story tells of how Xiao Yan used the Earth Core Soul Essence to elevate his soul power to an eighth-tier level!
While the Core Soul Fruit wasn't as potent, the fact that it bore such a name indicated that it too had the ability to enhance soul power.
With Mo Yu already possessing top-tier third-grade soul power, consuming the Core Soul Fruit could push him to break through to the fourth grade!
With fourth-grade soul power combined with the soul techniques Mo Yu mastered, he could stand his ground even against Dou Ling-level fighters.
The thought of this filled Mo Yu with excitement.
"It's true! Our leader's daughter found it in a hidden valley, but we were ambushed by the damn Wild Lion Mercenary Group on our way back. They must be fighting even now," the man said, his face contorted with frustration and fear.
"Here, take this healing potion and treat your wounds. Once you're done, lead me to your team," Mo Yu instructed, handing the man a small vial of healing medicine.
"Lead you there?" The man was startled, shaking his head frantically. "No, young master, that's too dangerous! The Wild Lion Mercenary Group has over twenty members, and three of them are eight-star Dou Shi!"
"Go to Lannister Town and get help! The main group will be here soon," the man pleaded desperately.
"Stop wasting time and take me there. By the time your leader gets here, your team will be dead," Mo Yu said coldly.
The man hesitated, eyeing Mo Yu with doubt. The young man's appearance and mysterious aura were confusing, making it hard to gauge his strength.
But with no other options, the man reluctantly applied the healing ointment to his leg before pointing toward a hill in the distance. "It's just over that ridge..."
