With Ditto, the shape-shifting Pokémon, in the room, the atmosphere was lively and full of joy. After lunch, the five Pokémon were playing happily in the room.
At the same time, Sato was enjoying a delivered meal of pork cutlet and rice, eating contentedly while watching Ditto entertain Zubat and the others by showing off its transformation skills.
There was no doubt about Ditto's excellent memory. From what Sato had observed so far, Ditto could recall at least 15 different Pokémon transformations. Among those, its transformations into Sandshrew, Pidgeotto, and Aipom were the most refined.
When Sato referred to Ditto's transformations as "most refined," it meant that when Ditto transformed into those Pokémon, it could mimic not only their appearances but also their habits and abilities, using their skills with great flexibility.
For example, when Ditto transformed into Aipom, likely due to its similarly playful nature, it mimicked Aipom to perfection. The Ditto-turned-Aipom was almost indistinguishable from a real one, fully adapted to Aipom's body and even skillfully using its tail just like a true Aipom.
It became apparent that for Ditto to fully utilize the abilities of a transformed Pokémon, the first step was to adapt to the new body.
If you think about it, it's the same for anyone suddenly placed in a different body. It would be hard to use it fluidly right away, let alone master the new abilities or techniques that body offers.
Once adapted to the new body, the next step was to understand its unique traits, such as the special abilities related to that Pokémon's body or attributes. Without grasping these, Ditto would be far from achieving a perfect transformation.
For example, Aipom's unique trait is its highly flexible tail, while Ralts possesses the ability to sense emotions through the red horn on its head. Sandshrew, on the other hand, excels in digging—a standout ability among Ground-type Pokémon.
After mastering the body's characteristics, the final step for Ditto is learning to use the abilities granted by that body.
When Ditto transforms, it inherits the physical form of a Pokémon, essentially acquiring a body driven by instincts passed down through its bloodline. This means it can only use moves that the Pokémon would have naturally learned as it levels up. However, any moves the original Pokémon learned through other means, such as TMs or tutoring, are inaccessible to Ditto, as it lacks their memories.
This explains why, at the beginning of a transformation, Ditto typically starts with just a shell of a body and limited moves. The idea that Ditto could instantly master an opponent's moves, as seen in games, is far from reality—Ditto is only copying a body, not the memories or experiences tied to it.
Due to these limitations, it's rare to see Ditto used in battles, not only because of its low base stats and limited battle capabilities but also due to the practical shortcomings of its transformation ability in combat.
For Ditto to achieve a perfect transformation of another Pokémon, it would need to spend a significant amount of time training. However, if Ditto lived alongside the Pokémon it wished to transform into, it could observe and mimic them, which would greatly shorten the time needed to master the transformation.
In some cases, breeders even use Ditto as a partner for rare Pokémon to produce healthy offspring. Those Ditto, however, are always ones that have achieved perfect transformations of a specific Pokémon.
Currently, although Sato's Ditto shows great promise in terms of its transformation talent, its overall strength is still quite immature at level 15, and even its three most practiced transformations haven't reached perfection.
Nevertheless, Sato never expected Ditto to have overwhelming battle power. He valued Ditto for the strong disguise abilities it could provide instead.
In Sato's current team, Zubat handles scouting, Bellossom manages support and healing, Growlithe is the squad's main attacker, and Nidoran, the future ace, delivers powerful, consistent damage. Ditto, in comparison, fits more of a supporting role without excelling in any one area.
Ditto's main role within Sato's team was as his disguise assistant, crucial for enhancing Sato's survival skills as the team's absolute core. As such, Ditto's role was extremely important.
Based on Ditto's current transformation abilities, it was clear that it was capable of taking on the disguise role for Sato. Transforming into simple objects was much easier than turning into Pokémon for battle.
Of course, if Ditto excelled in its disguise role and had extra energy to spare, Sato wouldn't mind letting it join battles. Sometimes, transforming into a Pokémon that could counter the enemy and providing interference on the battlefield could be quite useful.
"Alright, it's time for a nap. We still have skill training in the afternoon, and we can't afford to be tired then," Sato said, standing up after taking nearly half an hour to slowly savor his pork cutlet rice. He addressed his five Pokémon, who had been excitedly playing in the room.
Seeing Sato speak, Zubat and the other four Pokémon obediently quieted down and returned to his side, ready for Sato to recall them into their PokeBalls.
"It looks like you're getting along well with everyone. Even though you're new, you'll be joining the training later too, so rest up in your PokeBall," Sato said, smiling as he patted Ditto, who was still in the form of an Aipom, on the head.
Since the other Pokémon were returning to their PokeBalls to rest, Ditto naturally had no objections. It nodded and allowed Sato to recall it as well.
With that, the room finally quieted down. After tidying up the slightly messy room, Sato pulled out a Berry Mixer and began making some PokeBlocks. Since he had sold some PokeBlocks earlier in the morning, his stock was running low.
Additionally, after purchasing Ditto, his funds were nearly depleted. He needed to produce a batch of PokeBlocks quickly and find some buyers to sell them to.
After about an hour of work, Sato had produced over 200 high-quality PokeBlocks and more than 1,000 mid-quality ones. As usual, he would keep the high-quality PokeBlocks for his own use and sell the mid-quality ones.
By now, it was almost 3 PM. After eating a gem-level PokeBlock to recover some energy, Sato changed into a clean Trainer uniform and left the room.
The preliminaries for the Elite Four Exhibition Match were only two days away. Sato was eager to see how far his strength could take him in this elite competition. Aside from the opportunity to battle the Elite Four, there were plenty of valuable prizes up for grabs.
Even if he didn't make it to the finals, just breaking into the top 100 would earn him a year's supply of premium Pokémon food for six Pokémon and a prize of two million PokeDollars. That reward alone was enough to drive Trainers crazy.
It wasn't hard to imagine that the number of participants for the preliminaries would be overwhelming. This meant that as long as Sato kept winning, he'd have plenty of strong opponents to provide real battle experience.
This would give him a chance to improve his skills and gain valuable experience for his future challenge at the Battle Tower in Larousse City, Hoenn.
.After all, Saffron City had earned its reputation as the "City of Battles." In this city, there was no shortage of Trainers willing to fight—you just had to decide whether you wanted to battle or risk getting defeated.
"Intense Pokémon battles, I can't wait," Sato thought to himself excitedly.
