Capítulo 55: Cranberry Season (December) Part 2

Lisa rolled her eyes and turned again.

 "He's not," she replied.

"Sorry to disappoint," Carl said, obviously not sorry at all and barely containing his glee, "but I saw them at the movies last night."

 "No, I don't think so."

"See, that's the problem with saving it for marriage," Carl told her. "The guy just finds someone easy, like my sister."

"I was with Fabian last night. Your sister dates his brother. And I don't think she'd appreciate the way you describe her. She's my friend and I know I don't." Lisa could feel a headache starting. She really did not need this today.

"Right. You were with Fabian when he was making out with my sister at the movies. That's kinky. Maybe Moreno would like to get some of that."

"That's disgusting." It was out of her mouth before she could stop it. "Your sister dates Fabian's twin brother, so it's an understandable mistake on your part. I'm sure Franco would be flattered that he finally looks so much like Fabian."

"Lisa, when are you going to wake up?" Carl demanded.

"I don't have any idea what you're talking about. I know that I was with Fabian last night. We went to Oxbow to pick up my learner's permit so I can learn to drive. He took me out for Chinese food while we were there, and the brought me home. We spent some time visiting one of his sisters. Not that my schedule and social life are any of your business."

 Carl burst out laughing.

"You want to learn to drive? Oh, that's rich! You always did tell the best stories, Lisa."

"Carl, I don't understand why you give me all of this attention and keep asking me out when you obviously don't ever believe a word I say. And another thing. You might think you're teasing, but it comes out as just plain mean. Someone will be out with your coffee." Lisa went into the kitchen. A very large, bald man turned from the counter where he'd been eating. He stood and approached Carl. Carl was ready to make a flippant remark, but changed his mind on closer inspection. The man was huge. His bald head and earring made him look either like Mr. Clean or a genie from a lamp.

"You need to stop bothering Lisa," the man said, cracking his knuckles.

"What's it to you? Who are you, anyway?"

"Dante Carrillo. I'm a friend of Fabian and Lisa's. I don't like seeing her treated badly. Her fiance is not dating your sister. He is not cheating on Lisa. She is not interested in you. Move on."

"That's where you're wrong," Carl said triumphantly. "She's interested. If she wasn't, I would be able to upset her. I obviously hit some nerves."

"No, you were getting on her nerves, which is a completely different thing. She's a waitress and was raised to be polite. She won't tell you what she really thinks of you. Her dad probably should be the one who runs you off, but he's a little too polite, too. Fortunately, she has friends who are not too polite. Seriously. Move on. She's not interested. And I don't want to have to tell you again."

It's been hard for Lisa -- having her best friend off at school and only getting to see her during breaks. Thankfully, Annie and Keith graduate soon and will be back for good.

"Welcome home!" Lisa grabbed Annie in a tight embrace.

"I can't believe it's almost over," Annie sighed. "Just one more semester and I'm done! Hey -- want to see my birthday present?"

"Absolutely!" Lisa pulled back and bounced a little, excited. Annie proudly extended her left hand, showing off a bright diamond solitaire. Lisa squealed and hugged her friend again. Annie had dated Keith Wong since she was allowed to date at sixteen. They had been friends before that. Now they were going to graduate from college, just as in love as they'd ever been.

"It's not as huge as yours," Annie said, "but I like it."

"Your sister picked mine," Lisa replied, pulling back again and comparing the two rings. "I'm not convinced that she didn't steer Fabian to the most expensive thing he could afford!"

Annie laughed. "Good point," she said. "Keith was on his own for this one. Amy's not going to be pleased that he bought it in Newtown, but she'll get over it. I was blown away, and it was really distracting during exams."

"He did a really good job," Lisa said. "That ring is gorgeous."

"We're thinking about next fall. Will you be a bridesmaid?"

"I'd be hurt if you hadn't asked," Lisa smiled. "And I'm sure you're saving the Honor post for your sister. As you should."

"I feel bad about that, though," Annie said. "I'm your maid of honor."

"That's because my sister is doing the music," Lisa reminded her. "Amy is your twin. I understand. Fabian's having trouble picking a best man. He's considering just having all of the guys be a band of merry men."

 Annie burst out laughing.

"He would," she said. "What about Dave Jensen?"

"Well, there's also Franco. And he's spent a lot of time with Greg and Keith. He's not sure who to ask out of those four.

"So are we going to get together to do any string quartet stuff while you're home, or do you think the rings will be too distracting?"

"I've missed it a lot," Annie said. "I haven't had as much downtime as I'd like lately. Dad wanted to know if we'd be interested in playing in the lobby of his building before Christmas like we did last year."

"I'll ask Fabian -- unless your dad got to him first. They've become real buddies lately. It started after the first night we practiced here. They hang out at the diner a lot now. If not at breakfast then at lunch."

 Annie laughed again.

"Dad didn't want to be impressed by Fabian, but he really was. Mom told me later that Dad was convinced we'd put music on and were making out like crazy up there. He went up to check on us and break it up. When he came down, he was a fan of Fabian's for life, I think. So tell me all the gossip!"

"What hasn't Amy covered?" Lisa wanted to know.

"Amy's in post-baby world," Annie told her. "She only talks about Ryan, Ethan, and sometimes Greg."

"Well then, you need Franco and Shelly updates, the my sister-in-law is still pregnant updates ... why don't we go have lunch?"

"Sounds good. Adrianna's? Please? The pizza at college is gross compared to hers."

 Lisa laughed.

 "Whatever you want. I'll buy."
