He already knew the ability had potential, but he wasn't willing to spend the time and energy on slowly putting it together. But now that he knows that someone close to him can find him no matter where he goes, he is more inclined to make the sacrifice. 

He always knew it was a possibility, but the threat has just become real and too close for comfort. He is still spooked that he almost made the decision to escape and risk the pursuit of the information broker.
