Capítulo 26: Reconnaissance

For several long moments, Hala said nothing. She stood at the head of the table, her fists clenched at her sides, her mind racing through the possibilities. This wasn't just a simple diplomatic failure. The Holy Ruberios Empire had made an open challenge, a provocation they would regret.

When Hala finally spoke, her voice was steady but icy. "This is an act of war."

Pan, who had long been the voice of caution, stepped forward. "Empress, we must tread carefully. Ruberios is vast, their military strong. A full-scale war could devastate us."

But Hala's mind was made up. "We will not cower. The Ruberios Empire has committed a grave sin, and I will not let them escape the consequences. We will show them the power of the Lazurite Kingdom."

Hala turned toward Najma, the strategist among her advisors. "Najma, we will need information. I want everything you can gather about the Count's fortress—its layout, its defenses, everything. Use whatever resources you need. Send word to our informants in Ruberios and gather intel. No one moves until we know exactly where Zephyra and Caelum are being held."

Najma, her sharp eyes reflecting the resolve in Hala's, gave a curt nod. "I'll send out scouts immediately, Empress. We have spies embedded in Ruberios—they will get us what we need. The Count's arrogance will be his downfall."

With her gaze steady, Hala turned her attention next to the gnomes and fae who had helped her build the Lazurite Kingdom's formidable infrastructure. "I want our defenses strengthened," she ordered. "Our magic tech is advanced, but we must ensure that if Ruberios decides to retaliate, we are ready. The kingdom must be fortified from every angle, from the skies to the underground."

The elder fae Faune and Pan exchanged glances, their concern palpable. Pan, always the more cautious of the two, spoke softly. "Empress, while we can bolster our defenses, war with the Ruberios Empire would be costly. Their military is immense, and their religion faction is powerful—if they declare this a holy war, other nations might rally behind them."

Hala met his gaze with unwavering determination. "I know the risks, Pan. But if we let this slide, if we allow the Ruberios Empire to kidnap and torture our people without consequence, then every nation will believe we are weak. The Lazurite Kingdom will not bow to threats. We will meet them with strength, or they will crush us."

While war seemed inevitable, Hala's immediate concern was the safe return of her envoys. She called for Eshara, the Lazurite Kingdom's most skilled thief and spy. Eshara, known for her ability to move through shadows and evade detection, would be the perfect operative to infiltrate the Count's fortress and rescue Zephyra and Caelum.

When Eshara arrived, her dark eyes gleamed with anticipation, knowing the magnitude of the mission Hala would assign her.

"Eshara," Hala began, her voice calm but firm, "Zephyra and Caelum have been taken captive by the Count of Ruberios. I need you to get them back."

Eshara's lips twitched into a slight smile, though her demeanor remained focused. "Consider it done, Empress. I'll slip into that fortress unnoticed and have them back before the Count even realizes they're gone."

Hala nodded, her trust in Eshara absolute. "Najma will provide you with the fortress's layout as soon as we receive it. The Count is expecting a ransom or surrender, but instead, he will wake up to find that his hostages are gone, and his leverage with them."

As Eshara prepared for her mission, the kingdom's war preparations began in earnest. Hala called a meeting with her generals, instructing them to quietly ready the kingdom's forces for battle. Though she hoped to avoid a direct confrontation until Zephyra and Caelum were safe, she knew that war with the Holy Ruberios Empire was now a foregone conclusion.

The Great Cosmic Thoth system had already begun tracking the movements of Ruberios troops near the border, ensuring that Hala's forces could anticipate any sudden strikes. The Lazurite Kingdom was a technological marvel, and its combination of cosmic magic and magic tech made it a formidable adversary—but Ruberios, with its massive armies and religious zeal, would be no easy foe.

Hala stood in the war room, surrounded by maps and reports, her mind constantly calculating the best strategies. She would not simply fight a defensive war—if Ruberios sought to destroy her kingdom, they would soon realize the error of their ways. Hala had no intention of fighting a war on their terms. She would strike hard and fast, devastating them before they had the chance to mobilize their full forces.

"We must hit them where it hurts," she murmured to herself, her mismatched eyes glowing with intensity.

As night fell, Hala found herself standing alone atop the Lazurite Pyramid, the cool desert breeze rustling through her hair. The kingdom below her was alive with activity, its people preparing for what they knew was coming. Even in the stillness of the night, there was an electric tension in the air.

Her heart ached for Zephyra and Caelum, who had put their trust in her when they left for Ruberios. She had sent them to negotiate, believing that diplomacy could prevail. Now, she felt the weight of responsibility for their capture. But if there was one thing Hala knew, it was that she would not allow her people to suffer at the hands of an enemy without retribution.

The stars above shimmered faintly, and Hala felt the familiar hum of the Great Cosmic Thoth system as it pulsed in the back of her mind. She was never truly alone. The cosmic energy that had shaped her powers and guided her through her rise to leadership was always with her.

"Thoth," she whispered softly, her eyes focused on the distant horizon. "Send me a report on the progress of Najma's scouts. I want to know everything the moment we hear from Ruberios."

Thoth's voice was immediate and calm. "The scouts are already in position, Hala. You will have the information you need shortly."

Hala's lips pressed into a thin line. "Good. We don't have time to waste."

With her mind set on the rescue of Zephyra and Caelum and the inevitable conflict with Ruberios, Hala began to steel herself for the trials ahead. The Ruberios Empire had made a fatal mistake in underestimating her. They had thought to break her will by capturing her envoys, by making demands through threats and violence.

In the days that followed, the Lazurite Kingdom continued to mobilize. The people, sensing the tension in the air, prepared for what they knew was coming. The city buzzed with activity—blacksmiths worked tirelessly to forge new weapons, the gnomes tinkered with magic tech to enhance the kingdom's defenses, and the Desert Djinn began readying their elemental powers for battle.

Hala oversaw it all with a calm yet fierce determination. Najma's network of spies and informants worked tirelessly, gathering information about the Ruberios Empire, while Eshara prepared herself for the dangerous mission to infiltrate the Count's fortress.

It was the calm before the storm, but Hala knew that it wouldn't last long. Soon, the winds of war would blow across the desert, and the Lazurite Kingdom would be at the center of the storm.

But this time, Hala would ensure that they were the victors.
