Capítulo 2: Chapter 2 Attack

```
I didn't know how much time had passed.
Maybe a few seconds, maybe more than ten.
Song Heping regained his consciousness.
Pain...
Pain everywhere.
His body felt like it was falling apart, his ears buzzing, as if his soul was about to be shaken out.
He wanted to call out to Ah Guan.
"Ugh—Ugh—"
The moment he opened his mouth, an irresistible wave of nausea surged, and Song Heping couldn't help but vomit.
The driver's cabin was filled with the sour stench of stomach acid, and after he had thrown up everything from breakfast, he finally felt a bit clearer and turned his head to look for Ah Guan.
Ah Guan was curled up in the driver's seat, his eyes rolling back and whimpering, like an old dog that had been harshly clobbered.
"Ah Guan, are you okay!"
He wanted to reach out and pull Ah Guan up, but suddenly smelt a strong odor of urine.
Looking down, Song Heping couldn't help but exclaim, "Fuck! You peed yourself!"
Ah Guan glanced at his own crotch, feeling too ashamed to face anyone, and began to whimper again, holding his head.
Pop pop pop—
Pop pop pop—
Dense gunfire rang out from all around.
It was unmistakably the sound of Soviet-style weapons.
Song Heping cursed inwardly; this was a disaster.
It was exactly what he had feared.
No need to guess, it was definitely an attack by the Resistance Organization.
Bang—
A warhead hit the body of the truck, making a crisp sound.
Boom—
Then a hand grenade exploded not far from the roadside in front of the truck, raising a small cloud of black smoke.
Several new holes appeared on the already battered roof of the driver's cabin.
Song Heping instinctively ducked his head and waited for a moment before looking out through the now windshield-less front of the truck. He saw several US Army soldiers hiding behind a Stryker armored vehicle, continuously firing their M4A1 and M16 rifles across the highway.
On the right side of the highway, not far away, gunmen seemed to hide behind mounds of earth and buildings, their AK47s cheerily barking as they sprayed bullets towards the Americans by the Stryker.
The attackers clearly had a significant advantage, with US soldiers screaming as they fell to the ground. The convoy's commander shouted hoarsely into the radio microphone.
"Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! This is D1 squad, we are under attack on Highway 3 close to the airport outside the city! Repeat! We're being ambushed!"
Whoosh—
As the standoff continued, an RPG rocket flew in from across the highway, hitting the Stryker dead on.
This RPG was fired at a tricky angle. The armored vehicle was surrounded by an anti-explosion grille and was stuffed with sandbags, which would typically be enough to fend off a regular RPG. The attackers had aimed carefully for this, targeting the front wheel.
While the front wheel blocked the RPG rocket, the metal jet and shards could bounce to the other side of the vehicle because of the gap between the bottom of the vehicle and the ground, hurting soldiers hiding on the other side with poor cover.
Boom—
As expected, the front wheel was blown clean off, the Stryker's body sagged heavily, and smoke billowed out.
The spattering metal jet struck a US soldier's leg, immediately turning him into a rolling gourd on the ground, clutching his wound and howling in pain.
Soon, his camouflage trousers were soaked red with blood.
Another US soldier grabbed his tactical vest and dragged him behind the wheel.
At that moment, Song Heping saw the woman in the black robe take action.
He had noticed her before, sensing something was amiss, and now his suspicions were confirmed.
The woman suddenly threw back her robe, revealing an AK74U carbine hidden underneath, raising it to spray bullets at the group of US soldiers hiding behind the Stryker.
The American soldiers were all focused on the opposite side, and the woman in the black robe was behind them. Everything happened in the blink of an eye, with death silently sneaking up from behind.
Pop—
The Beretta 92F in Song Heping's hand rang out.
A burst of blood sprayed from the woman's chest as she fell straight down, still managing to pull the trigger before dying, releasing a burst of bullets.
The soldiers crouching behind the armored vehicle were startled; some pointed their guns in the direction of the woman's fall, while others pointed towards Song Heping.
Suddenly, one of the US soldiers with a big beard gestured, lowering the gun of another soldier who was pointing at Song Heping.
He realized that if it weren't for the person hiding in the truck, they and their teammates would probably be on their way to meet God right now.
The big-bearded US soldier nodded at Song Heping, seemingly a friendly gesture of thanks.
Song Heping nodded back.
His heart was in turmoil.
This was the first time he had killed someone.
Although he had served in the military and fired a gun before, killing someone was a completely new experience.
He had no choice just now. The woman, the soldiers, and he himself were all in a straight line. Firing at them with the AK74U, considering its notorious spread, could easily take him out along with them.
```

The feeling of killing someone is terrible.

Song Heping felt dry-mouthed and his tongue parched, his heartbeat clearly accelerated, and his body temperature rose, making him feel agitated and at a loss, with his fingertips trembling slightly.

He steadied himself and said to Ah Guan, "We need to find a way to leave this place."

Ah Guan, bewildered, asked, "I'm not going out, I have a young wife and child, and an elderly mother..."

It was no wonder Ah Guan was so fearful.

Now outside, bullets were flying everywhere as the US Army soldiers and Resistance Organization gunmen fought fiercely. Trying to leave the truck now would probably be inviting trouble.

Song Heping didn't bother to explain; he found a walkie-talkie on the floor of the cab and pressing the talk button, called Tan Pudgy in the other truck.

"Pudgy, Pudgy, this is Heping, do you hear me?"

After several shouts, there was no response from Tan Pudgy.

Song Heping's heart sank.

It looked like Tan Pudgy's chances were slim.

Dang dang dang—

It was the sound of bullets hitting the truck again.

Immediately afterward, a pungent diesel smell entered Song Heping's nostrils.

Damnit!

The fuel tank had actually been hit!

His hair stood on end.

This was damnation opening the door to more damnation—it couldn't get any worse!

Although diesel has a higher flash point, it doesn't mean it couldn't catch fire, especially now that bullets were flying everywhere and hand grenades were raining down; a single grenade landing nearby could ignite the leaked diesel.

A hard choice lay before him once again.

Go out?

Or stay here and wait?

This was the first time in Song Heping's life that he faced real combat.

There were no baby steps, no psychological preparation, it was straight into a hellish ordeal.

He, too, started to panic.

Whoosh—

Before he could make up his mind, another RPG rocket came flying over and hit the Stryker in front once again, causing sparks to fly.

Right after the explosion, two soldiers who were hiding behind the vehicle staggered and then slid to the ground alongside the Stryker, leaving behind a trail of blood.

"Hansen, watch your back!"

The bearded soldier who had nodded at him earlier shouted hoarsely.

"Take them out!"

The soldier called "Hansen" was crouching next to Big Beard, wearing a baseball cap with quick reflexes. He kneeled and spun, smoothly transitioning from left shoulder to right shoulder, firing his M4A1 carbine in short bursts and suppressing the two armed insurgents that emerged from another direction.

The two ambushers quickly dove behind a crumbled earthen wall along the road to take cover.

At this point, the situation on the ground was highly disadvantageous for Big Beard and his men; insurgents were coming from all directions, and they were caught in a crossfire.

Song Heping felt that this time he might indeed be in serious trouble.

If these soldiers died, when the insurgents came to clean up the scene, he didn't know if they would also take him out, especially since he had just killed one of them.

Soon, he witnessed a shocking scene.

The bearded soldier and Hansen were astonishingly in sync; Hansen, with only his M4A1 carbine and rapid magazine changes, managed to lay down fire like a light machine gun, completely suppressing the gunmen behind the earth wall from raising their heads.

Meanwhile, Big Beard leaned over and took an M72 anti-tank rocket launcher from Hansen's back, quickly disengaging the safety, and fired at the earth wall.

Boom—

The wall was immediately swallowed by dust.

Big Beard discarded the M72 rocket launcher and swiftly switched back to his M4A1 carbine, aiming at the earth wall, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Before the dust had cleared, an armed insurgent covered in blood staggered out, swaying unsteadily as if he were drunk.

Big Beard raised his gun and lightly squeezed the trigger, a neat burst taking the man down.

"Nice shooting!"

Song Heping couldn't help but admire in his heart.

He suddenly noticed that these two bearded men seemed a bit different from the other Country M soldiers.

Their uniform and helmets were unique: one was wearing a baseball cap, the other something like a skateboard helmet, and their M4A1 carbines were fitted with numerous tactical attachments. Remarkably, they lacked any rank or branch insignias, setting them apart from the regular Country M soldiers.

"Hansen, smoke bomb! Let's retreat to those houses over there!"

Big Beard shouted to his companion, pointing to a chaotic array of buildings not far on the left side of the road.

The slopes on both sides of the highway were filled with dense earthen houses. If they could pull back there, they could use the buildings to counter-attack, and as long as they could hold out for a while, the US Army's reinforcements would surely arrive.

"Yes, boss!"

Big Beard and Hansen each took out a smoke grenade, exchanged a glance, pulled the pins, and threw them into the middle of the highway together.

Then they quickly threw a second smoke grenade each to different positions.

The smoke from the four grenades quickly enveloped the highway, forming a wall of smoke.

Big Beard waved his hand, "Retreat!"

Capítulo 3: Chapter 3: Crossfire

Big Beard slapped the shoulder of Hansen in the baseball cap heartily, then raised his gun and began to suppress the gunmen across the street with continuous bursts of fire.

Hansen dragged someone up from the ground and started running toward the buildings on the left side of the highway under the cover of other US Army soldiers.

The person being dragged didn't look like he was from the military—he wasn't wearing a uniform or any insignia, just a bulletproof vest and carrying a pistol, his complexion pale as if he were a civilian official from the Green Zone.

Ding ding ding—

More and more stray bullets hit the car, reminding Song Heping that if he didn't leave now, it would be too late.

He decided to run into the cluster of buildings to hide.

As long as he could hide in those complex mud houses for about ten minutes, he guessed that US Army reinforcements would have arrived.

"Ah Guan! We…"

As he watched the situation outside, he reached back to pull Ah Guan but felt a hand that was wet.

A foreboding thought rose again, and Song Heping suddenly turned around to find his hand drenched in red.

Blood!

Ah Guan was gone…

Gone so suddenly, he didn't even have a chance to grunt, his eyes not yet closed.

A stray bullet had pierced the cabin and hit this unfortunate man's head.

The thin sheet metal of the civilian vehicle's body could not stop a 7.62 mm caliber warhead.

Watching his friend die right beside him, Song Heping felt a clump of irritation in his throat, which was incredibly uncomfortable.

Ah Guan had not had an easy life. In his thirties, he had been married twice; he had two daughters with his ex-wife and, in pursuit of a son, divorced and remarried, only achieving his wish for a son two years ago.

An ex-wife and current one, three kids, and elderly parents above…

Now, everything was over.

The pillar of the family was broken.

With no time to grieve, Song Heping turned to escape from the damned truck.

Just as he poked his head out, several bullets flew over his scalp, hitting the vehicle and sparking small sparks, startling him back into the cabin.

Bullets were flying everywhere, and in his ears, he could hear the sounds of warheads hitting the ground, boring into the soil, or striking the vehicle with a dinging noise.

It seemed like there were shooters all around him.

He had no idea where the enemy was.

Maybe they were everywhere.

"Damn it!"

Song Heping cursed coarsely to embolden himself, then suddenly sprinted out and ran as fast as he could.

You absolutely cannot be timid or fearful on the battlefield.

The more you are afraid, the more likely bullets will find you.

Song Heping didn't choose to run in the same direction as the soldiers from Country M.

They were running to the right; he chose the left.

The soldiers were the targets of the attackers, he wasn't, following Hansen and Big Beard was like courting death.

Song Heping felt the thirty meters to the buildings as long as three kilometers as he ran.

As he ran, he continually prayed in his mind to his parents' spirits in heaven to bless him!

I can't die, I absolutely can't die!

His brother had just started college, his sister was in her first year of high school, both waiting for him to send money back home.

If he were gone, they wouldn't even be able to afford their tuition.

If he were gone, they would have to depend on others for food.

Before his dad died, he had instructed him, as the eldest sibling, to act as the father.

So he couldn't die.

No!

He had no right to die!

Thirty meters, just a few seconds, Song Heping ran breathlessly.

Song Heping was lucky and successfully made it to the local residential area, hiding behind a wall corner.

Before he could catch his breath, bullets reached him.

Bang bang bang—

The sudden gunfire startled him, and he instinctively ducked his head.

This duck probably saved his life.

Several bullets hit the wall behind him, directly chipping off a chunk of hard-packed earth.

Because the point of impact was so close, the spattering earth stung Song Heping's face.

Song Heping didn't dare look for where the enemy was; instead, he quickly stood up and kept running.

Luckily, the houses here were closely packed, with less than four or five meters between buildings.

Right ahead of Song Heping was a household with a wooden gate.

Fear unleashed his amazing strength, allowing him to crash through the door, himself and door slamming into the interior.

Just as he got up from the ground, he heard the hurried footsteps approaching through the alley behind him.

The attackers didn't seem to intend to let him go, as they had already followed him.

There was no time to hide inside the house.

Looking around, he spotted a large water jug in the courtyard and quickly hid behind it without giving it much thought.

In a cursed place like Baghdad, where it hardly ever rains, water is a precious resource, so many homes have a large water jug for storage.

Water has one advantage, it can block bullets, so hiding behind the water jug was not a bad choice.

Song Heping quickly pulled out his Beretta 92F pistol, which now was his most reliable ally.

However, holding the gun in his hand, he couldn't help but smile bitterly.

The attackers were armed with AK47 assault rifles, while he only had a pistol, completely outclassed in terms of firepower.

A fight would be a huge disadvantage!

Fortunately, the courtyard was small, and in close combat, a pistol might still encounter some luck.

If he was ruthless enough, perhaps there was still a way out.

Just as he was holding his breath and waiting for an opportunity, the footsteps suddenly stopped.

The air in the courtyard instantly became tense.

Due to tension, beads of sweat from Song Heping's forehead dripped onto the ground with a patter.

Outside the gate of the courtyard, a gunman wearing an Arabic robe and mask, holding an AK47 leaned against the wall; he stealthily pulled the pin off a Soviet-made RGD5 grenade and tossed it into the courtyard.

Clang clang——

The grenade rolled into the center of the courtyard.

With one glance, Song Heping's hair stood on end.

"Fuck!"

He quickly curled up his body, trying his best to take cover behind the water jug.

Boom——

Seconds later, the explosion blasted.

Even with mental preparation, the shockwave across his face felt like a slap, causing a stabbing pain in his eardrums and his head filled with the ringing as if gongs and drums were being played, an indescribably exhilarating sensation.

The water jug, impacted by the explosion, surprisingly didn't shatter but was left with several small holes, with water hissing out of them.

What Song Heping didn't know was that he had once again narrowly escaped death.

Soviet grenades are notoriously powerful, but the RGD5 had a smaller yield.

It had a kill radius of only 15 meters and contained only 110 grams of explosives, primarily relying on shrapnel to kill.

If the militants had thrown a Soviet-made F1 or an older model RGD42 grenade, Song Heping wouldn't have survived without serious injuries.

Before the echo of the explosion faded, the armed militants had already rushed in, guns raised.

Song Heping knelt behind the water jug, not yet recovered from the out-of-body sensation.

The militant spotted the large water jug at a glance.

A sinister smile appeared at the corner of his mouth, as he turned the gun barrel planning to empty his magazine.

At the critical moment, unexpectedly, an unexpected event occurred.

Perhaps King Yama wasn't ready to claim Song Heping that day.

From the doorway of the mud house, another AK47 stretched out and opened fire on the militant.

When the militant turned to retaliate, he realized it was too late.

Bang bang bang—

The AK47 at the door fired first.

The masked militant was hit by multiple bullets in an instant.

At less than ten meters, the 7.62 caliber warheads effortlessly pierced through his body, chillingly efficient.

As the militant fell, almost as a reflex, he also pulled the trigger toward the door.

Bang bang bang—

Bullets flew across the small courtyard, dust billowing from the walls.

A few seconds later, the gunfire stopped abruptly.

Song Heping regained his strength and cautiously moved out from behind the water jug.

The sight before him was practically absurd.

The militant who had been pursuing him lay on the ground, not yet dead, his body twitching as blood flowed below him, forming a small stream.

Carefully moving closer, Song Heping saw that the man had been hit in the neck, probably severing a blood vessel, and blood was gushing out like a fountain.

Yet the militant, not dead yet, saw Song Heping approach and reached out for the assault rifle that had fallen to the side.

"This guy's really tough…"

Song Heping kicked the assault rifle away, feeling an inexplicable anger, thinking, do I owe you a massive debt? Why are you so dead set against me?

Watching Song Heping kick away his rifle, despair flashed in the militant's eyes, he gasped, tilted his head, and died.
