Capítulo 79: Chapter 79

James had woken up before me and already disappeared to train with Sylas, I was feeling much better and getting around easier. It helped that I was able to eat more substantial foods now. My throat was still sore and recovering, but tonight would be the last night that Dr. Lex would make a house visit.

I rolled over in bed to check my phone, which was sitting on the nightstand. Dr. Lex hadn't texted me yet; maybe she was running a little late or had an emergency come up. I did see a text from Layla. It had been a while since I last heard from her, and I thought she had forgotten about my existence.

Her text was a warning: "Sorry I haven't been in touch, sweet girl. I have been imprisoned for going against the Ulfric. They intend to kill you if you don't leave with them willingly when they raid the Biltmore Estate. Your father was just recently able to sneak me my phone so that I could reach out to you."

I sat there, shocked by the message she had left. I read further, "I will be in touch with any updates from your father. My phone will be turned off, so if you reach out and I don't respond, just be patient, and I will respond when I can. I love you, Kara; I hope you are feeling better after being hospitalized."

I guess the werewolves back North still had some information after the two located me. I would tell James about her warning when he returned from training. In the meantime, I responded to Layla, though I didn't expect her to answer right away.

I typed, "They turned on you too; I'm so sorry. You should have just treated me like the others did." I paused before typing, "I'm okay. Sylas attacked me because he was mad that James was being disobedient and not listening to him; he felt that I was to blame. James has taken great care of me and saved me from Sylas; then he came to the hospital every night to be by my side."

I set my phone down and got ready for Dr. Lex to arrive. I used the bathroom and washed my hands and face before changing my clothes. Today was the first day I felt well enough to wear anything besides comfortable bummy clothes. I put on a pair of jeans that James had in the closet and settled for a maroon V-neck t-shirt that belonged to James.

I still needed to have my arms exposed for the IV that Dr. Lex would have to insert later. I grabbed my phone before I went to the kitchen and left the walker behind. I didn't need to keep using it, and though I got a little winded, I still made it down the long hall without needing to take a break. I took one of the pre-made meals from the freezer.

I placed it in the microwave. It was a vegetable soup that smelled delicious as it heated up. When the microwave dinged, I pulled the meal out and stirred it before placing it back in for a few more minutes. I noticed that all the vegetables, aside from the corn and peas, were diced very small.

I waited patiently for the microwave to finish reheating my meal and pulled my phone from my back pocket. Dr. Lex still had not contacted me, so I checked in on her: "Hey, Dr. Lex, is everything okay?" I ensured the volume was turned up so I would hear all notifications before placing it on the kitchen island.

The microwave dinged again, and I removed my soup and placed it on the island next to my phone. I grabbed a spoon and a glass of water before sitting down to eat. The soup was heavenly, and all the vegetables were so tender I barely had to chew. It was so nice to eat actual food and to feel full once again.

I was almost finished with my meal when I heard a loud bang. It startled me, and I almost dropped my spoon. It sounded like a car had wrecked near the estate. I walked into the sitting room and pulled back the window's curtain to inspect the grounds. I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, so I took a deep breath and returned to my meal.

I'm sure James could explain the sound later, and I felt safe here; I knew he would take care of me. Besides, the werewolves weren't supposed to attack closer to the full moon, which was almost a whole week away. I finished the soup and cleaned my bowl and spoon in the sink. I took my phone and the glass of water and set it on a coaster on the end table in the sitting room.

I figured that Dr. Lex would arrive soon, so I sat patiently by the fireplace and played solitaire on my phone to pass the time. I looked up when I heard the door open. James had completed his training, and when I saw him, I asked, "What was that loud crash?" My voice was still scratchy, but I could tell it was improving. He smiled and said, "I'm getting stronger.

I looked at him with confusion, "What, did you throw a car?" He chuckled, "Not as far as I would have liked." My mouth dropped open. He walked over and closed my jaw with his pointer finger, "Sylas had an old junk car delivered earlier today." He sighed, "Unfortunately, I had to crush it down the middle and split it in two before I could lift a piece with my hemokinesis."

I was shocked, "That's still over a thousand pounds." He smiled again, proud of himself, "I know." He kissed my forehead. I smiled, but it faded quickly when I remembered the warning that Layla had sent me. He looked at me perplexed, "What's wrong, Love?" I looked down and said, "I heard from Layla; it's not good news."

He sat down next to me and cupped my hands in his. He always had a way of comforting me. I said, "Layla was imprisoned for standing against the Ulfric." He looked at me and said, "It'll be alright." I shook my head, and tears began to well in my eyes, "She said that when they attack if I don't go with them willingly, they will kill me."

James scoffed, "I won't let them get anywhere near you." He paused, "That's why I've been training so hard to protect you." He wiped away a tear that rolled down my cheek and lifted my head to meet his gaze. He said, "I promise, Love. No one will ever hurt you again." His words made everything right in my world. I only hoped that things would turn around for Layla as well.

My phone's ringtone went off, interrupting us, and I pulled my hands from him to grab it quickly. It was Dr. Lex. She was on her way and had been waiting for my prescriptions to be filled. I turned to James, "Dr. Lex is on her way over." He nodded and said, "I need to take a shower anyway; I'll leave you two alone. We can discuss this later."

I nodded and returned his comforting smile. He strolled down the hallway to our bedroom and disappeared for a time. I responded to Dr. Lex, "Thank you so much; the door is unlocked. I'll see you soon." I walked over to the door where the coat rack was and attempted to move it.

Dr. Lex was much stronger than I was, but I still managed to move it by pushing it along the floor. It was quite the workout for me, and I broke a sweat by doing it. I picked up my glass of water with my trembling hands and took a long, slow sip before sitting down on the couch to rest.

Ten minutes had passed when I heard a knock on the door as Dr. Lex announced her arrival. She entered the room, seemingly as out of breath as I was. She said, "I'm so sorry to keep you waiting. I'm sure James is already back from work, and I didn't want to cut into your quality time."

I smiled, "It's okay. He's taking a shower right now." She nodded and plopped her medical bag down on one of the chairs. She took out all the usual instruments and went through her mental checklist as she monitored and documented all of my vital signs. She asked, "Did you do anything strenuous recently?"

My cheeks reddened, "I moved the coat rack." She placed her palm to her forehead before scolding me, "You aren't supposed to push yourself." I looked down, "I'm sorry." She replied, "It's okay; I just don't want you to hurt yourself." I nodded. She continued to do her routine and then talked to me about my medications after she placed my IV.

She had gotten me liquid versions of them for ease of ingestion and said, "Contact me if you have any questions or need anything regarding your health. I smiled and said, "Would you want to meet up for lunch or dinner sometime once I can eat normally again?" She smiled, "I'd like that. I don't have many friends because of my job, but if you can work with my schedule, I think we could make it work."
