There was a brief silence, and only the sound of two people breathing could be heard in the quiet bedroom. Klaus let out a dull sigh as he released Emily's hand.
"Nothing." He stood up and pulled on his pants. "I'll go out on the balcony for a cigarette."
Emily watched Klaus's retreating back, lost in thought: he must have something to hide from me.
After a few minutes, Klaus hadn't returned. So Emily put on her nightgown and ventured out onto the balcony.
Klaus stood on the balcony with his back to her, the fountain's water gurgling softly, the cigarette between his fingers glowing faintly red in the night, and the white smoke surrounding him. His back looked tall and lonely in the pale moonlight.
He stood still, blending in with the night.
