On the walk home, Laurits joined us.
Turning to look at him, I gave him a raised eyebrow.
"What?" he asked, pulling off one of his earphones.
"How was your first day of school?" I asked him.
"It was fine, I guess." he said, raising his hand to put the headphone back over his ear.
I shook my head.
"Not going to ask us how our day was?" I asked him.
He let out an exaggerated sigh.
"Fine. How was both of yours day…oh, that's great." Laurits said sarcastically, without waiting for us to respond before putting his headphone back over his ear.
I shook my head again as I turned to look back at Magne.
"You would think it would kill him to be nice."
"Why do you even try?" Magne asked. "He's been like that since we were little."
I shrugged. "It won't kill us to at least try and get along."
Finally reaching home, we were greeted by our mother who was excited to hear how our day went.
Laurits just shrugged her off with the excuse that he needed to do homework before heading to his room, while Magne said he was tired and wanted to take a nap.
"sigh…I guess it went well." she said, sounding sad, before she turned back to head to the couch in the back of the house.
"It was good mom." I said, causing her to turn and give me a small smile.
"That's good to hear, dear." she said, before continuing to the living room, in a downcast mood.
I watched as she left.
'She's trying to change! Can't you idiots see that?' I thought as a spike of anger flared in my chest.
Turning to look up the stairs, I decided that if she was trying to change, so would we.
Taking the stairs two at a time, I made it to the top quickly.
Dropping my bag off in my room, I abruptly walked into Magne's room, swinging the door open, where I saw Magne seated on his bed looking strangely at his hand without his glasses on.
I gave him a weird look as he shot upright like I had caught him doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing.
"Knock before you just barge in like that!" Magne said, grabbing his glasses from his bed.
"We have shared a room our entire lives, Magne." I said, closing the door behind me.
"There isn't anything you could have been doing that I haven't seen before." I said sarcastically while turning to look at him.
It must have been clear on my face that something had upset me, because the abashed look quickly left Magnes' face as he spoke.
"What is it?" He asked, sliding his glasses back on.
"It's you and Laurits." I said sternly.
Creasing his brow, magna looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
I dropped my hands to my side as I gave him a deadpan look.
"Couldn't you see mom wanted to talk to us when we got home?" I asked.
He shrugged, still looking confused.
"Yeah?"
"And what did you and Laurits do?"
It seemed to dawn on him as he opened his mouth slightly in realization.
"You are upset that we blew her off?" He asked with a small laugh.
"Yeah, I am." I said.
"Why?" He asked. "She did the same to us for half our lives."
I pointed at him. "You think I don't know that, Magne?" I asked him.
"That I wasn't there when she was consumed with depression, sitting on the couch watching TV surrounded by empty bags of sweets all day, every day, while we were living off welfare because she couldn't keep a job." I asked.
Magne didn't say anything.
"I know you feel anger towards her, Magne." I said. "So do I. But can't you see she is trying to change."
"like that is supposed to make up for all those years."
"That just a few months of her caring will change years of neglect."
"Of course it won't, Magne. But we now have the chance to keep her from falling back into that." I said, as I heard the sound of music booming from Laurits room.
We both looked at the wall, then back at each other.
"Look, Magne." I said, looking him in the eyes. "To me it is worth putting a few bad years behind us, for a few decades of our mother being happy in front of us." I said.
He looked away from me and looked out the window in his room.
Guess I had made some sort of impression on him, I left him be, closing the door behind me, before taking the two steps to Laurits room.
Except, when I tried the doorknob it was locked.
Knocking on the door, I waited for a response but only heard the music get louder.
"You can't stay in their forever." I mumbled to myself as I left him be for now.
For the rest of the afternoon, I stayed in my room, finishing some simple homework sheets.
At dinner, I was happy to see Magne try a little more when It came to talking to our mother.
Instead of giving one word replys, he would try to carry it a bit more, which seemed to make mom happy.
Laurits however was the same as always.
But after giving his foot a not too gentle tap, he got the picture and tried a little as well.
[3:28 AM] (3rd person POV)
Laying in his bed, Bjorns body shook and shivered as sweat covered his bare chest.
Then like a switch being turned, Bjorn opened his eyes to reveal light bursting from his eye sockets lighting his room as if the sun had come down from the heavens and filled his room with its intense brightness.
Then the ground that covered the land seemed to convuls like an earthquake.
But through all of this, one word seemed to slip from Bjorns lips in a deep voice that belonged to someone else.
"hætta"
In less then a second the earth stopped its rumble and the light that emanated from Bjorn's eyes dimmed until It too was gone.
