Chapter 29: When The World Needed Him Most Part 20

Kel was still staring at the contents of the duffle bag, trying to piece together what the handcuffs, key, map, lube, and spice could possibly be used for. 'What kind of twisted scavenger hunt am I supposed to go on with these?' he wondered, shaking his head in disbelief.

Just then, he heard Katara's voice calling from outside his igloo. "Sokka, are you awake? Granny sent me to make you some soup."

Kel quickly shoved the duffle bag under his bed and tried to look as nonchalant as possible. "Yeah, I'm awake. You can come in," he responded.

Katara entered the igloo, carrying a basket filled with ingredients. She immediately narrowed her eyes at him, her suspicion clear. "What were you doing?"

"Nothing," Kel quickly replied, doing his best to look innocent. "Just relaxing."

Katara didn't seem convinced but decided to let it go. She placed the basket of ingredients nearby and started unpacking them. "Granny sent me to make you some soup, so I'll get started on that."

"You can use the workbench," Kel offered, gesturing toward the bench that now looked as plain as it had before his makeshift massage setup.

"Thanks," Katara muttered, heading over to the workbench and beginning to prep the ingredients.

Kel watched her for a moment before asking, "So, how was the tour with Aang?"

Katara kept her focus on the herbs and fish she was chopping. "It went well. Aang is a nice guy, unlike a certain someone. He could teach you a thing or two about being considerate."

Kel pretended to believe her, nodding sarcastically. "Oh, really? That's good to know."

Inwardly, though, he thought, 'Nice guy? Translation: total simp she would never date. At least I know I'm not in the friend zone.'

Katara continued chopping without paying much attention to Kel or his sarcasm. "He's really interesting, you know. Full of questions and eager to learn about everything."

'Yeah, and eager to follow you around like a lost puppy,' Kel thought but kept his expression neutral. "Sounds like you had a great time."

Katara shot him a glance, clearly irritated by his obvious sarcasm now. "You could learn a lot from Aang's attitude you know. Maybe try being a bit more helpful and less of a jerk."

Kel raised an eyebrow, his sarcasm still present. "I'll keep that in mind, Katara."

She sighed, turning her attention back to the ingredients. "Sometimes I wonder if you'll ever take anything seriously, Sokka."

Kel leaned back against the wall of the igloo, watching her work. 'Oh, I take plenty of things seriously. Just not the same things you do.'

As Katara continued preparing the soup, the igloo filled with the aroma of fresh fish and herbs. Kel found himself momentarily distracted by the comforting scent, his mind wandering away from the bizarre contents of the duffle bag hidden under his bed.

Katara finished prepping the soup and placed the pot over the fire at the center of the igloo. The warm, comforting aroma began to fill the space, making Kel's stomach rumble in anticipation. With her hands on her hips, Katara turned to face him. "So, do you plan on sleeping all day, Sokka?"

Kel, still reclining against the igloo wall, raised an eyebrow. "It's not my fault someone heavy fell on me and injured me."

Katara's eyes flared with anger. " Heavy!! Are you calling me fat?"

Kel immediately backpedaled. "No, no, I'm just joking! I think you have a really great body. I'm sure your new boyfriend Aang will love it."

Katara's face turned bright red. "Aang is not my boyfriend! And you've never said anything nice about my body before."

Kel smirked. "I've called your butt cute several times."

"That doesn't count!" Katara snapped. "You were just making fun of me. And what does it even mean to have a cute butt, anyway?"

Kel shook his head, still smiling. "You wouldn't get it."

"Don't make me want to hurt you, Sokka," Katara warned, her fists clenching.

Just then, Gran Gran's voice called out from outside. "Sokka, is Katara in there?"

"Yes, Gran Gran!" Kel replied quickly.

Gran Gran entered the igloo, giving them both a stern look. "Have you managed to make the soup, Katara?"

Katara pointed to the pot. "It's cooking now, Gran Gran."

"Good," Gran Gran nodded approvingly, handing Katara a small jar of ointment. "Once he drinks the soup, apply this ointment to his injuries. It should help. I've also given Aang a place to sleep, but he should leave once he's recovered. I don't trust him; something about him seems off."

Kel immediately chimed in. "That's what I've been trying to tell Katara, but she's too in love with him to see it."

Katara's face turned red again. "I am not in love with Aang!"

Kel chuckled. "I'm just kidding, Katara. But give the guy a break, Gran Gran. He's a little weird, but he seems to mean well."

Both Gran Gran and Katara looked at Kel in surprise. "Why the change of heart, Sokka?" Katara asked.

Kel shrugged. "I still don't trust Aang completely, but since you think he's a good person, I'll trust your judgment."

Katara's expression softened. "Thank you, Sokka."

Gran Gran smiled warmly. "It's good to see the two of you getting along. Katara, once you're done with Sokka, you can either join the other women and me in preparing the prunes from yesterday or take a rest."

Katara nodded. "Alright, Gran Gran. I'll join you once I'm done here."

Gran Gran turned to leave. "Good. We'll be just outside. Take your time."
