Capítulo 25: The meaning of 'home' to Gresvin

'Well, it is understandable at this stage, but they need to focus more on technique. Manon has power but no control and Marcus… mm, well he's all round not bad, everything is rather balanced and at this stage rather still average,' he sighed. 'The game never had stuff like this, it's quite strange actually. Well it's not like I can compare the two anyway,' he smiled ruefully.

Clang!

The sound of the swords clashing rang out in the otherwise quiet atmosphere. Marcus tried to block each strike from Manon and, to a large degree, was able to, but Gresvin could see the sweat dripping down from his brows. 'He's trying to be too defensive,' Gresvin shook his head. 'No wonder he is sweating so much. Being so defensive takes a lot more out of a person than they realize. He should parry rather than block and try to conserve his energy.'

'There we go!' Gresvin almost shouted out. Seeing Marcus move once more, he used his footwork to create some space between him and Manon. While doing so, he made it look like he was about to strike Manon.

Manon growled in frustration after falling for the same feint once more. The two of them had yet finished, and they clashed a few more times before slowly separating. Clapping sounds riveted across the area; both Manon and Marcus turned to see Gresvin leaning against a cabin post and clapping.

"Morning, my Lord!" they saluted. "Both of you did splendid. It was quite a good sparring match, I must say. It was entertaining to watch," he complimented them with a warm smile.

"Haha!" Marcus chuckled and said, "Thanks for the praise, my Lord, but we still have much to work on." He humbly spoke. That, indeed, is correct, but for rank 1 warriors, you were not too bad. He smiled and kept on complimenting them, to which both men could only sheepishly laugh in response.

"Now, a few pieces of advice should be in order." Gresvin turned serious, "This was something I learned from a True knight. Listen carefully. That master always said to listen to your footwork. It will tell you when you're getting sloppy, when your form breaks down. Finding your rhythm and starting to understand the flow of combat is essential in any battle."

"By finding your rhythm you will understand how you fight and how you can influence a battle. Not all warriors are gifted in every aspect of their training. Take Manon for example, his outlying quality is his heavy sword strikes that have all his power behind it." He gave the two men a couple of pointers based on what he could remember from what his Uncle had taught him.

"If you keep this up, then you might advance your skill by quite a large margin," he said with a light smile. Then, suddenly, a realization dawned on him: 'Wait… skill? Could it be?' He wanted to confirm immediately, but before he could, he greeted the two and swiftly left.

The sudden thought had appeared, and he needed to confirm it, so he rushed into his own cabin, which was not too far away from the training area. Once he was inside, he closed the door and summoned the window panel for the military, but instead of looking for the overall stats of an Imperial Recruit, he called out Marcus' panel.

What he saw made him solidify his conjecture even further.

{Marcus}

{Strength - 11}

{Agility - 11}

{Dexterity - 9}

{Intelligence - 12}

{Charisma - 10}

{Skills:}

{Swordsmanship - Beginner (5)}

{Experience - 19/100}

The information was related to his skills. Gresvin was in such a rush to confirm his thoughts because a while back, he had thought that if his archery skills were to be upgraded, he could technically be called a rank 3 warrior.

'Why had I not thought of it before?' he slapped his forehead speechlessly. If I would need to advance my skill in order to advance, surely they, too, would need to have some sort of increase in skill.'

Now, after seeing the info, Gresvin knew what the requirements were, or rather, his guess was just becoming more likely. The only way to confirm his conjecture is to see it for himself.

'But how? I don't think swinging a blade continuously alone would help too much, sparring could be the answer. And if sparring is one way to increase it then a battle would most definitely help.' his mind raced, searching for possibilities. One of the reasons he thought sparring and battle would help was in fat due to two reasons.

The first one concerns his current life and the experience he has accumulated. 'This world has almost the same way of increasing the strength of warriors as the game.' After all his years in the Oakfall Marquis, he remembered that the warriors stationed at the house always trained when they were not on duty.

For that reason, Gresvin came to speculate that continuous training should help, and rightly so. Gresvin found his reasons a bit silly, but the second reason was that the game had the exact same style. The warriors would gain exp in battle, and once they had enough exp, they could advance to the next rank, depending on whether the player had enough money, of course.

"To think I did not even recognize it sooner, " he smiled bitterly, 'I didn't even notice it in the slightest.'

He lamented for thinking so foolishly. After all, it was common knowledge that if one wanted to improve in a specific field, then he would need to continue training and trying. 'Hah, it really… was simple, and it was right before me all along.'

After all this time, he had finally understood what was needed, and thanks to his late realizations, he would be able to devise some sort of plan to help his warriors increase in strength; it was to the point that he thought if he joined them, he would also be able to increase his strength.
