Chapter 76: Secret Code
Alger instinctively glanced at Mr. Fool, whose voice always remained calm as he spoke from within the gray fog.
He wanted to ask what that phrase meant, but suddenly felt unsure if he should—if he asked, would he still be able to leave the Tarot Club alive today?
Alger looked at Alice, who seemed to say whatever she wanted. He worried that one day he might be struck dead by lightning for failing to cover his ears in time while chatting with Miss "Fate" and overhearing something he shouldn't.
As Alger hesitated, unsure what to say, Alice couldn't hold back: "Aren't you going to ask me what the secret code is?"
"...What is it?" Alger obligingly asked.
Satisfied with his response, Alice leaned back in her chair and recited in clear Mandarin: "Odd changes, even stays the same; look at the quadrant for the sign."
"Qi, ji, uh... Miss 'Fate', could you please repeat that?" Alger struggled with the unfamiliar language.
After Alice taught Alger how to pronounce the secret code word by word and they agreed on a specific time and place, Klein lifted the screening, thinking Alice was definitely not a good teacher.
The Sun was the next to speak. Following Audrey and Alice's example, he raised his hand and said: "Mr. World, the extraordinary weapon you gave me exceeded my expectations. I've accumulated enough merit to exchange for materials and advance to Sequence 8. In the next few days, I'll use my remaining merit to hire help and obtain the true roots and sap of the Foggy Tree Man. I'll be able to complete the transaction soon."
It seems the Sun really likes that easily portable axe... Klein thought. I wonder if that "wealth accessory" has been sold? Will I see that gentleman selling "wealth accessories" at the next gathering?
"Very well," Mr. World nodded and responded in a hoarse voice, "Ladies and gentlemen, do you have any leads on Mutated Black Panther spinal fluid or Elf Spring essence crystals?"
Audrey shook her head without hesitation. After pondering for a few seconds, Alger suddenly said:
"There will be a grand gathering of pirates on the Sonia Sea soon. The fleets of four Pirate Kings and six—no, seven Pirate Admirals may participate, as someone new has joined their ranks.
"At such a grand event, there will surely be trades of extraordinary materials. There's a good chance that the not-so-rare Mutated Black Panther spinal fluid and Elf Spring essence crystals will appear.
"I have an opportunity to participate in this gathering, but what can you offer in exchange?
"I'm sure you don't have the formula for the Wind-blessed potion now, and it will be difficult to obtain later."
Alice, who planned to hitch a ride next week, couldn't help but glance at the "Hanged Man".
Mr. World chuckled darkly:
"Indeed, I don't have the Wind-blessed potion formula yet, and I won't be able to find a way to obtain it anytime soon.
"However, I do have an incomplete formula for a Sequence 4 potion.
"Although it's incomplete, I'm sure you understand its value. It's worth at least 10,000 pounds, and most of the time, you can't buy it even if you offer double that price. This is a crucial step in human transformation.
"What do you think? Are you interested? The Mutated Black Panther spinal fluid is worth between 500 to 700 pounds, and the Elf Spring essence crystals are 300 to 400 pounds. I think you'll need to prepare an additional 9,000 pounds in cash or equivalent items."
How does he have a Sequence 4 formula... Alice was slightly stunned. Remembering that beneath Mr. World's gloomy exterior was someone brave enough to divine the Eternal Blazing Sun, she suddenly had a guess about the origin of this formula: "Say... Mr. World, you wouldn't happen to be talking about a Sequence 4 from the Sun pathway, would you?"
Derrick's heart skipped a beat, unable to suppress his excitement for this unconfirmed formula.
Alger and Audrey observed Alice and "World", thinking they must know each other.
"That's correct," "World" confirmed Alice's guess. "It's the Sequence 4 'Unshadowed' potion formula from the Sun pathway."
For a moment, Alice felt a fleeting temptation to divine true gods. No, she didn't even need to divine true gods—if she could just divine her past and origins, she might be able to find all the potion formulas for her advancement...
Warned by her spirituality, Alice quickly stopped this dangerous train of thought.
"'Unshadowed'..." Alger repeated softly, then calmly replied, "I'm sorry, but I don't need it."
Huh? Does he... have confidence in obtaining potion formulas from the church? After all, Klein wouldn't just offer any Sun pathway formula—who would spend money on a Sequence 4 formula they can't use, especially an incomplete one? The Sun pathway and Storm Church sequences are likely interchangeable.
Come to think of it, are there any interchangeable sequences for the Fate pathway? Alice wondered briefly, though it didn't matter much to her, as she guessed she'd probably be stuck on this path for good.
Incredulous at being rejected, Mr. World said, "You can owe part of it first. With Mr. Fool as witness, I'm sure you'll make up the difference."
"No, I really don't need it," Alger shook his head.
He's quite confident... Alice propped up her chin, curious to see what other bargaining chips Mr. World might produce.
"World" was silent for a few seconds before saying, "How about other potion formulas, or some secrets I know? For example... secrets about the top sequences."
It must be about Sequence 0... Alice thought pensively, recalling the gathering at the Brave Bar. If someone tried to trade such secrets for items there, surely no one would be interested?
So, when selling things, you have to target the customer's needs. The same item can have different values for different customers...
Alice nodded thoughtfully.
Alger adjusted his posture slightly and carefully replied, "I already know some secrets about the top sequences. How can you ensure there's no overlap, and how can you guarantee that the secrets you speak of are worth as much as the Mutated Black Panther spinal fluid and Elf Spring essence crystals?"
"We can each give the secrets we know about the top sequences to Mr. Fool. He can compare them to check for duplicates and confirm their value. Mr. Fool, is that acceptable?" "World" answered.
Then, the Fool in the gray fog responded in an authoritative tone: "That's fine."
Aren't they all you?! Alice marveled at Klein's brazenness, feeling she could never act so convincingly herself.
Alger slowly nodded and said, "I have no more questions. Let's begin."
Meanwhile, Audrey, who was currently short on funds, could only watch this scene enviously.
