Ash had started on his journey alone through the unknown forests. He had a map that Sasha and Yuri had left him but it was only good for telling him which path to take to reach his destination, he had no idea where he was. And above everything else, he had lost his powers, he tried to feel his mana every five minutes, it had become like breathing for him lately, having the powerful mana inside helped increase his confidence and made him feel secure. Now he felt like he was too open and anything could kill him, he couldn't remember how he had managed to stay alive before he had started using his powers.
There were dense trees on both sides of the path he was taking. He was reminded of the countless stories of merchants traveling paths like this and getting attacked by bandits or a pack of wolves. Then there was the big task of finding a place to camp for the night, he had never camped alone if this was the forest near his village, he would have been fine, he knew what kind of animals lived there and how to keep them away, but here even the vegetation looked so different, he might just get stung by a poisonous bush and end up dying. The sun was setting and he had already started to look for a place to stop and rest, he wouldn't mind stopping early and reaching his destination a little late if it would mean he would be safe at night. That's when he spotted the dancing lights coming from the right side of the path from between the trees. There was also a cluster of noises coming from far away. He looked at the path, there were tracks of horses and wheels in the mud. It looked like another caravan of people had just set camp here. Ash wondered if he should join them, Would that be a good idea? If he was in company he would definitely feel much safer. But what if the company turned out to be bad? he couldn't camp on the path, it would be much safer to go off track and camp in the forest, maybe he could go left, away from them. But now that he knew there was someone else in the forest too, he knew he wouldn't get any sleep even if he camped away from them, too afraid of someone finding him. So, for now, he knew he would have to at least check who these people were. It hadn't even occurred to him till now, that they were most probably not humans.
Ash got off the cart and slowly made his way through the trees closer to the lights. The camp was small, there were only three carts that he could see. But what intrigued him was the strange symbols and carvings that these carts had on them. They all had an ominous and dark look to them like they were cages instead of carts, he recognized some of these symbols on Sasha's skin. And when he saw the figure sitting near the fire, he just instinctively knew that this was a witch, whether it was because of being around Sasha he didn't know because he had never seen even a depiction of a witch. But like the first time he had seen Sasha at the North Tower, this figure also had a black hood covering her face even though she was sitting in front of a fire in the dark forest. He knew it was a girl, because unlike Sasha she had the hood only on her face, and she was wearing a black dress, which showed enough skin to tell him it was a woman. He wondered if witches were a good company, Sasha was a good example and she had never said anything negative about them but the atmosphere of this camp wasn't very welcoming. Ash taking a brave decision, coughed and made them aware of his presence at the boundary of their camp.
"Who is there?" the woman looked up suddenly and saw Ash.
"I was just passing by and saw the lights of your camp, I was planning to camp nearby, so thought I'd introduce myself just in case," he said quickly raising his hands. Two more hooded women appeared out of nowhere and they were all clearly shocked to see him because they didn't reply. From their left a cart door opened and another woman appeared, this one had no cloak on, in fact, she was wearing only drapes of clothes and a lot of amulets on her arms and symbols all over her skin, she had a darker complexion than the other women.
"A human? I never would have guessed to find one here?" she said in a dreamy voice. She had black hair, black eyes, a very thin sharp, and bony face, with black markings even on her face.
"Come in, come in, you must tell us your story of how you ended up in this part of the world," the woman jumped out of the cart.
"You must be alone, otherwise we would have sensed you, and anyway we weren't looking for a human, usually the things that are found here are pretty big or too powerful to not notice," she said smiling and sitting down.
"Mother, we shouldn't," the first woman he had seen spoke up.
"It's fine child, don't forget the humans are our closest relatives, and I don't sense any bad aura from this one," she said.
"Uh I have my cart on the path, let me bring it here first," said Ash.
"No, worries, Nadira and Tamsin go and bring his cart around," she turned and ordered the other two figures who had appeared and they left at once.
Ash entered the camp under the light of the fire.
"Ah, it had been a while since I had seen a human and so young too, tell me child how did you wind up all the way here, and what was your name again?" she asked.
Ash thought about how to best answer this question.
"Ash Blake, The amazons brought me here," replies Ash wondering how will they react to this answer.
"I am Kalinda Nightglow, nice to meet you, Ash Blake, this is my daughter, Sage, well I had suspected that the amazons could be the ones with human males among them but they don't usually let them travel around freely, and last I had heard they hadn't started mingling with the opposite sex yet since their new chief was chosen," said Kalinda.
"Yeah, I am not with them like you are thinking, they are just training me how to fight," said Ash.
"A human managed to get the amazons to teach him their skills, that's even more surprising," said Kalinda. Nadira and Tamsin had brought his cart into the camp.
"Yeah, my mentor had done a favor to one of them, and since he was busy he asked them to teach me," said Ash.
"Still, you are full of surprises it almost feels like destiny that we met, usually people stay away from us, why do you not fear like the others?" Kalinda asked turning a curious gaze at him.
"Oh, I guess I am too tired and I have seen a lot of crazy things in the last month, and I don't even know much about witches to be honest," said Ash shrugging.
"Well, contrary to the rumors, we are always happy to have company to socialize, it's just that witches have never been treated with respect by anyone, in ancient times they used to hunt us and burn us alive, so we have been always more reclusive," said Kalinda.
"If you don't mind me asking what are witches really?" Ash asked hoping he didn't offend them.
Kalinda laughed loudly and the other three sitting across him giggled under their hoods too, Ash knew they were his age and from what he could see, they all had amazing bodies, Sage, Kalinda's daughter had red hairs spiraling down her front and landing on her chest, her dress was cut low and she was showing plenty of cleavages, she had big boobs and they jiggled when she giggled, It had been a while since he had seen a normal human female, the elves were gorgeous, the amazons a sight to look at, but a normal human female with a curvy body like that still somehow made him the most excited.
"Well, nobody really knows how we are born, we are just chosen by the Dark Lord, we are usually born to human families, only girl children, and our powers don't appear until we are five years old, this doesn't happen with any race, either they have powers when they are born, or in the case of normal humans who can use magic they can only start harnessing their mana when they are much older, and with witches, we don't have affinities like the rest of you, we thrive on chaos, and it's probably the reason we have always been feared," replied Kalinda.
"So, she is not your daughter?" Ash asked.
"No, not by birth, I rescued her from a small human village and named her my child later, but that's how it was with my mother, and our bond is just as strong if not stronger," said Kalinda.
