As the night wore on and the bustling streets of the city began to quieten, Seraphina's steps grew heavy with fatigue. The evening had been filled with unexpected twists and turns, leaving her heart weary and her mind spinning with thoughts of the future.
With each passing moment, the weight of the day's events settled upon her like a heavy cloak, dragging her down into the depths of exhaustion. Her eyelids grew heavy with sleep, and she longed for nothing more than the comfort of her own bed within the palace walls.
But as Seraphina made her way back to the palace, her steps slow and deliberate, she couldn't shake the feeling of dread that gnawed at her insides. The encounter with the prince had left her shaken and vulnerable, and she dreaded what further indignities he might inflict upon her in the privacy of his chambers.
As she reached the grand entrance of the palace, Seraphina's heart sank as she caught sight of the prince waiting for her, his expression dark and foreboding. She knew that she had no choice but to face him, to endure whatever verbal assault he had in store for her.
With a heavy heart, Seraphina approached the prince, her steps faltering slightly as she braced herself for the onslaught of his words.
"Seraphina," the prince said, his voice cold and cutting. "You look positively exhausted. Tell me, have you been enjoying yourself with that lowly servant of yours?"
Seraphina's blood ran cold at the prince's words, his contemptuous tone sending shivers down her spine. She knew that she had to tread carefully, to choose her words with caution lest she incur his wrath.
"I assure you, Your Highness, I have been attending to my duties as instructed," she replied, her voice steady despite the fear that threatened to consume her.
The prince's eyes narrowed, a cruel smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Oh, I'm sure you have," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "But let us not pretend, Seraphina. We both know the truth. You are nothing but a whore, a commoner girl playing at being a lady. Do not think for a moment that you can deceive me."
Seraphina felt a surge of anger rise within her at the prince's cruel words, his contemptuous tone cutting her to the core. But she knew that she had to maintain her composure, to weather the storm of his abuse until she could find a way to break free from his grasp.
With a steely resolve, Seraphina met the prince's gaze head-on, her eyes blazing with defiance. "I am a servant of the crown, Your Highness," she said, her voice ringing with conviction. "And I will not dignify your baseless accusations with a response."
For a moment, there was silence between them, the tension thickening the air with its palpable intensity. And then, with a dismissive wave of his hand, the prince turned and stalked off into the darkness, leaving Seraphina alone with her thoughts and the bitter taste of his contempt lingering on her tongue.
