Valeriana, a storm of emotions brewing within, held Verona's gaze. Resolve hardened her jaw, a desperate glint flickering in her eyes, like a drowning person clinging to a flimsy piece of driftwood. Some resolve tinged with a bitter edge – anger at herself. The guilt that gnawed at her was deepest and most apparent emotion of all.
