"Man… being home after a whole year stuck in a crystal feels weird," Ruby muttered as she flopped down onto her bed and snuggled in on top of the covers, breathing in the scent of fresh laundry and turning to face the rest of her room as well- it was surprisingly clean for all that she'd left it alone for nearly a year, and it was probably because someone had cleaned it in the last while in preparation for her return. Probably dad, come to think of it. She should thank him for that later. "Gods… It's been ages since I was last here."
"Our last return to Patch was during the mid-year break in first year," Penny nodded, sitting down by Ruby and laying down so she could cuddle up with her girlfriend- the two of them naturally fitting together with perfect ease as their Auras settled together in gentle waves of pulsing iridescence. Penny wasn't entirely sure of the mechanisms by which red and green mixed to produce gold and then rainbow, but she assumed it had something to do with Ruby's nature as a grimm/human hybrid. "I hope it is alright, though. I would not want you to be uncomfortable during our vacation time together."
"Hm? Oh, it's great! Honestly, I've been wanting to just… spend some time at home for a while," Ruby smiled gently and snuggled against Penny with a happy little mewl as their Auras flickered together even more, melding so much that it almost felt like they were a single person instead of two very close girlfriends. "Really it's just… I haven't told anyone else, but I think I wanna spend more time at home than just what we have for break. I mean- I still wanna go back to Beacon too, but… I dunno. Maybe put off a few weeks? Depending on how I feel? I mean, the semesters have been ending earlier and starting later, I'm told, so maybe I'll feel better in a month, but it's just… I'm not done with being a Huntress. I just… wanna snuggle and cuddle and not have to worry about classes or saving the world for a while, y'know? Just… be a normal girl with normal knees for once."
"I perfectly understand," Penny nodded, holding Ruby close and returning Ruby's smile as she held her darling beloved in her arms and felt Ruby snuggle into her favorite place in the world- the crook of Penny's shoulder, of course. "I too would like to spend some time without having to worry about the state of the world. It seems that neither of us have really gotten to enjoy the world as much as we should have considering our respective stated ages. I have been an Atlesian Military project for almost my entire life… and while I cannot truly compare to your experience, I feel as though I am almost as sheltered as you are in some regards."
"Yeah… I mean, I don't wanna say I'm super sheltered but… I mean… I spent a lot of time with Uncle Qrow training to be a Huntress. A lot a lot. And… I mean, growing up in the woods more or less with only Uncle Qrow as the constant adult in my life until I came back from my hunts was… probably not great for being a normal person. At least Yang dragged me to Vale every now and then to hang out with her friends… that probably helped a lot," Ruby murmured, kissing the crook of Penny's neck and sighing as she squeezed her beloved tight. "It kinda sucks, doesn't it? The two of us not really getting to have normal childhoods because of what we are. Because we aren't normal kids. Because…"
"We were made and not born."
"Yeah… I wonder what it'd be like in a world without grimm… could we just be regular kids?" Ruby sighed quietly and shook her head. "I guess there's no real point in worrying about it huh? It's not like we can change the past or anything. Be nice if we could be normal, but… what we have now is awesome too. I'm so glad I met you."
She shuddered a little, burying her face into Penny's neck again and breathing deeply of her beloved's scent- the same scents as always, of metal and oil and electricity, the smell of springtime and new growth and roses faintly in the background. They filled her soul with light and happiness, just knowing that her beloved was so close- right there in her arms, and that she'd never let go.
"I'm so, so glad I met you as well, wishing star," Penny giggled, squeezing Ruby happily and wiggling a little as she nuzzled against Ruby's shoulder as well. "Being normal would indeed be nice, but I wouldn't give up what we have now for the world! Because you are my world!"
"Penny… wow…. You're my world too!" Ruby sniffled gently, squeezing even tighter as she hiccuped- tears forming in her eyes from the sheer wave of emotion that she felt. It was… intense, the feeling of pure joy and love surging through her, and feeling Penny's love and happiness was almost too much- both of them trembling and squeezing and holding each other tight as they laid there and simply shook against each other from the overwhelming joy of knowing that they were loved by the one they loved most in the world. "I love you so, so, so much Penny!"
"And I love you, Ruby!" Penny giggled, both of them holding tight for another few moments before the feeling faded- still full of love and joy, but more at a normal level now, instead of that overwhelming tide that had crashed against them and made them both emit a flood of rose petals that covered nearly every surface in the room with a mix of brilliant reds and greens, rainbows and golds mixed in amongst the slowly disintegrating petals. "You truly are the most amazing person I have ever met- the best thing that's ever happened to me."
"Gosh… it's the same for me too. I don't know where I'd be without you," Ruby murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to Penny's lips and mewling happily as Penny returned it eagerly. "Mmmn… I love you."
"I love you~!"
Both girls giggled happily, shifting positions slightly so Ruby could rest atop Penny as they continued to cuddle- Penny sliding into a half sitting position against the headboard of Ruby's bed while Ruby slid down to cradle herself against the expanse of Penny's abdomen and nuzzle in deeply with little snuffles and growls of happiness as she fully immersed herself in the feeling of Penny's beautiful, verdant Aura.
"I want this moment to last forever…" Ruby mumbled quietly, barely audible from where it was muffled by Penny's clothes and silicone skin, hugging Penny about the waist and sighing as she just relaxed with her face against her girlfriend's belly. "You're so good to me, Penny… I love you so much."
"And I love you as well, Ruby. We may not be able to stay like this forever, but I will hold you for as long as you like," Penny smiled, gently petting Ruby between the ears and humming out a quiet little song almost like a lullaby. She stayed there, watching Ruby's ears twitch and her tail wag languidly while the world outside slowly became blanketed in a layer of early December snow, the dirt road leading back to the main part of Patch slowly vanishing as the evergreen trees became dusted in white and drooped gently under the load. She smiled, breathing in and out slowly as she listened to the sound of bustling activity further in the house- in the kitchen downstairs, in the rooms around them… it wasn't Wynterfest for some weeks yet, but already Taiyang was busy putting up decorations, Yang was making cookies, Weiss and Blake were helping Qrow split logs outside… Cinder was tending to the fire, Neo was silent as always but was likely mixing up a batch of ice cream, Emerald was playing with Zwei, Yatsuhashi was with Mercury, the two of them playing videogames together, Fox was dancing along to the music playing in the kitchen, Coco and Velvet were talking quietly while they sat in the living room, her own father tromping up to the door in his chair…
The house was alive with the sound of joy and holiday spirit, and Ruby and Penny were simply basking in the warmth of her room, the fire in the living room heating the floor via the pipes under the floorboards, the chill of the wind outside bringing an occasional lovely breeze to keep the room from being stifling…
"I think this is the closest place I could imagine to paradise," Penny murmured quietly, her smile growing wider as she and Ruby laid there in silence, basking in each other's presence and letting their Auras pulse with each other and meld in slow, swirling eddies. "A warm, comfortable home full of friends and family and happiness … and you in my arms."
"Anywhere with you is a paradise, as long as we're together," Ruby murmured sleepily, yawning a bit as she sniffed the air and purred at the smell of cinnamon and vanilla filled the air, wafting from the kitchen below. "I love you, Penny~"
"I love you too, Ruby!"
"Mmm…" Ruby giggled a little, sliding up so she could rest her cheek against Penny's chest and feel the pulsing of her Aura core directly, listening to the gentle whirr and pulse of the systems in her body through her skin. "Love youuuu…"
"Love you too!"
They sat there in silence again, continuing to hold each other gently and letting their own warmth and joy fill the room.
And eventually- they drifted off, lulled to sleep by the warmth and coziness surrounding them.
