Chapter 87
Notes:
oh hey, it's team sssn
Chapter Text
"Oh hey! You're that faunus girl I met last semester!" came the voice of one loud, sort of annoying, sort of weird guy with an open shirt, a general Vacuo sense of style, and a cocky grin on his face. Also, blond hair, a monkey tail, and really nice abs. "Blake, right? Hey, sorry I never followed up with you, I uh… got told I came to Vale a semester early because someone, Neptune, forgot to tell me that Beacon starts in the winter instead of having a summer start like Haven."
He elbowed his companion in the side, a blue haired guy with an impeccable, boy band sort of style. The other two guys behind him were a red haired guy who was vaguely pirate-ish and a green haired guy who was… about the size of Yatsuhashi, but had about half the bulk and twice the amount of drip.
Not that there was anything wrong with Yatsuhashi, but the guy clearly preferred a sort of "less is more" kind of style.
"And I kept telling you Sun , you can't just go off a week ahead of us because if you'd waited then you'd know that Professor Coral was only hosting sign ups at the end of the semester! But nooooo, you had to go and sneak onto an ocean liner and stow away for a week because you forgot when the Vytal Festival was!" Neptune shot back, groaning and palming his face while the rest of the team all seemed to hang their heads in defeat, clearly knowing exactly how this argument went.
"Honestly Sun, you've gotten us in more scrapes this year than last- you may be our leader but that means you've gotta actually lead ," the red haired guy sighed, rolling his eyes while the last member of the team just sighed and shook his head.
"Sun Wukong, registered second year student of Haven Academy and leader of Team SSSN. Teammates: Scarlet David. Sage Ayana. Neptune Vasilias. Previously wanted in the city of Vale for an outstanding stowaway fine of: 235 lien. Fine paid by: Beacon Academy Student Transportation and Travel Department. Previously wanted in the city of Mistral for an outstanding jaywalking fine of: 5 lien. Fine paid by: Sun Wukong."
Penny paused as she tilted her head, furrowing her brow slightly as she looked down at Ruby, who was currently cuddled into her like normal, though she'd hidden some of the grimm features she usually kept on open display the moment she noticed Team SSSN approaching, probably to keep a low profile.
"I was not aware that Mistral criminalized jaywalking."
"Yeah, they did and it sucks- who are you again? Wait hang on- oh dang you're that girl I stepped on a few months ago! Sorry about that, I didn't wanna get arrested for, y'know, being a stowaway," Sun cleared his throat awkwardly, scratching the back of his head as he looked over the assembled group of Team RWBYP with a somewhat rogueish smile directed towards Blake… up until the point that she scooted her chair over and settled against Yang, who returned Sun's grin with a cocky smirk of her own. "Sooo uh… I guess you're taken, huh?"
"Twice over, yes," Blake nodded, raising an eyebrow and giving the monkey faunus a flat look as she fully scooted into Yang's lap, holding out her hand for Weiss to delicately take with an arched, elegant eyebrow of her own. "I'd say it's nice to meet you again, but I barely talked to you for two minutes the last time and you almost got me arrested. Sun, was it?"
"That's me! Sun Wukong. This here's Neptune, my best bud, and these are Sage n' Scarlet, my other best buds!" Sun grinned, throwing his arms around his teammates without once losing his general upbeat nature- only managing to get Neptune and Scarlet, since Sage was too tall. The green haired giant of a man still leaned down and rested his elbow on Sun's head, though. "We're Team SSSN, Haven's favorite second year team!"
"Uh huh…" Blake nodded, then fell silent as Yang squeezed her gently while Ruby slowly turned and faced Sun, squinting a little before nodding in approval- she could feel nothing but genuine, awkward, stupid good will from the guy, and although he still seemed like he was attracted to Blake, he also seemed like he wanted to extend friendship more than he was desperate for a date.
He and Neptune also had a much deeper emotional bond than with anyone else, though, so she was pretty sure Sun at least had options in the dating pool. Probably. She raised a subtle thumbs up, though, and Yang nodded just as subtly.
"Right, well, I guess you guys are cool if you apologized for that. I'm Yang, these're Blake and Weiss- all three of us are girlfriends so don't try to flirt- and that's my sister Ruby and her girlfriend Penny-"
"Salutations!"
"- and we're Team RWBY… P…. led by Ruby!" Yang finished, awkwardly clearing her throat as she mentioned their appended team name, because really, who'd ever heard of a five person team with such an awkward name? As rare as five person teams were, at least most of them had actual color names instead of just adding a fifth letter to the name. Like Team BLACK (Black), or Team PRWKL (Periwinkle), or Team SFLRR (Sunflower), all of whom had graduated Beacon at some point in the past. "Say hi, Rubes!"
"Hi!" Ruby called out, looking away from where she was buried in Penny's shoulder for a moment and giving the assembled Team SSSN an awkward little wave before returning to planting kisses on Penny's neck and cheeks without a second thought.
".... Isn't she a little young to be a team leader?" Scarlet mentioned, raising his eyebrow in curiosity.
"She's more than capable. She's been leading us for an entire semester so far without any issues," Weiss shrugged, then pursed her lips as she looked over to Ruby. "She's just shy around new people… unless she has a reason to not be. Like combat training."
"Ohhh, yeah, Sage is like that too!" Sun cut in with a light jab at Sage's side, the green haired student clearing his throat awkwardly and looking way with a quiet huff. "He doesn't like talkin' around new people cuz he's shy too! 'Cept a lot more people'll let it slide cuz he's huge."
"Hey," Sage nodded after a moment, waving awkwardly in a way that was more like he was just lifting his hand up and putting it back down, though he seemed marginally more relaxed than before. "I just need time to get used to people is all. Nothing personal."
"Ahhh, gotcha, gotcha. Soooo… you guys're here for the tournament, right?" Yang asked, taking charge of the conversation mostly because she was the only actual extrovert on the team and because Weiss and Blake were now busy again with their books, while Ruby and Penny were canoodling more than they were studying. Because of course they were. Ruby had nearly perfect recall… kinda… when she focused… because of grimm weirdness and Penny had actual memory banks.
"Mhmm! We're takin' it home for Haven again! First time in a whole decade!" Sun's grin became, somehow, wider as he spoke, flipping his weapon out from behind his back and clicking his staff into place over his shoulders with a casual air. "We've been training all last year for this, y'know? Best rookies in Haven, that's what they call us."
"You'll have a tough time, I'm sure. You're not the only top ranked rookies, y'know?" Yang shot back with her own cocky grin, standing up as Blake slipped from her lap and flicking her wrists to show off Ember Celica, the massive gauntlets forming from her bracelets with a whisper quiet mechanism and movement of metal parts. "Betcha Team RWBYP's gonna take the gold home. Well, that, or Pyrrha."
"Pyrrha?" Scarlet asked, tilting his head. "Like, Nikos? You know her?"
"... Well yeah, her team and RWBYP are basically sister teams, y'know? They dorm right across from us. She's cool, I'm still workin' on beating her, but we've got all semester to train and I know damn well Ruby'd beat anyone if she wanted to," Yang answered, slamming her fists together for emphasis whilst nodding towards Ruby, who… just sighed and shook her head before wordlessly pulling Crescent Rose off of her back and unfolding it with a single hand, every single member of Team SSSN paling as the little slip of a girl barely over five feet tall held onto a scythe literally as big as she was with one hand.
"That… is a really big scythe," Neptune mumbled under his breath, scooting away slightly with a slight pulse of fear in his expression. "Is- is that also a gun?"
"Yup!" Ruby immediately turned, eyes shining as she hopped onto the table (careful to avoid their study materials) and swung Crescent Rose around her with ease, shifting it into gun form with a happy grin. "Crescent Rose is my baby! She's a variable caliber ultra high impact sniper-scythe! I even upsized her a little during the break, so now she can fire anything from .50 caliber up to 40mm! And I got some Dust imbuement done on the blade so now if I really wanna I can trigger an Aura switch and light my baby on fire! It's super cool… not super effective though…"
"I think it is wonderful," Penny chimed in, clapping her hands and smiling adoringly up at her girlfriend. "The way Crescent Rose glows when you use the elemental Dust is mesmerizing, like a dance!"
"Aww, thanks firefly!" Ruby giggled, hopping off of the table to squeeze Penny in a tight, joyful hug. "Hey, the way you use Floating Array is like a dance too! So it goes both ways!"
"That it does!"
Yang sighed, motioning for Team SSSN to pull up some chairs as Penny and Ruby locked themselves into another complimentary feedback loop. "Ugh… they're so sickeningly sweet together…"
"I need to watch my sugar intake just looking at them," Blake continued dryly, flipping through a page in her book.
Weiss nodded. "Welcome to Beacon. This is…entirely normal for this team. Unfortunately."
Sun snickered a little.
"Riiiight…"
