Chapter Text
Contrary to popular belief, Professor Glynda Goodwitch was not entirely the harsh, no-nonsense taskmistress that brooked no argument and allowed no tomfoolery.
She was just… mostly that. In all honesty, Glynda had been a child once. She'd had her fair share of wild parties, illicit drinks, illegal drugs, and all sorts of things that most Huntsmen and Huntresses in training were more or less expected to get up to by at least their second year. She just… had a sense of responsibility that most seemed to lack. Including Professor Ozpin. And half of her colleagues, most of whom would ask to share if they caught a student taking a smoke break where they weren't supposed to.
She knew damn well Thumbelina- Professor Peach to her students and Lina to her friends- would absolutely join the circle if she found someone smoking weed at any point. Hell, Glynda was pretty sure Lina sold weed out of the Beacon greenhouses!
All this to say, Glynda wasn't much of one to begrudge the first years for treating their expedition out to the Emerald Forest as more of an extended nature hike when they were tasked with, mostly, clearing out random grimm that happened to wander a little too close to Vale for comfort. As long as they didn't slack off too much, of course.
Idly, she checked on the trackers notifying her of each team's positions- or at least, their scrolls. Most of them didn't actually have actual trackers that would let Glynda watch over them even if they left scroll range- save for Team RWBY, the four of whom were quickly becoming something of an odd favorite among the staff.
It wasn't that they were exceptionally good students- Miss Schnee was the most dutiful amongst them, but she could tell that there were subjects that each excelled at, and subjects that they… may not have treated with all due respect. All four excelled at sparring, but where Miss Rose excelled at anything involving combat, grimm studies, and engineering, she also tended to go largely catatonic in history class. Miss Xiao Long was equally good at combat, but tended to do somewhat poorly in stealth. Miss Belladonna made up for stealth, but her knowledge of mathematics was… rough. And Miss Schnee had an all around wonderful set of academic grades, but Glynda knew damn well she floundered quite a lot when it came to more practical lessons that involved getting down and dirty. Poor girl didn't even know how to set up a basic tent at first.
Regardless of their performance as students, Team RWBY had an experienced weapons engineer and a Schnee on their team, which allowed Glynda to not only keep track of their Aura levels via their scrolls, but also their precise placement, weapon usage, and Aura usage via the trackers implanted in each of their personal weapons.
It made verifying the amount of kills they wrote down quite a lot easier.
Glynda hummed, reviewing the drone footage as she sent a few of the floating cameras along to tail the leaving teams. Each group had been provided a drone that kept track of their progress in half hour increments, and the footage that downloaded to her datapad upon return was… quite enlightening.
Team JNPR had a very effective formation overall- ripping through a nest of young Deathstalkers and Creeps with aplomb as they supported each other and advanced and withdrew with tactically precise timing. Mister Arc was definitely living up to his role as team leader by now.
Team SLVR seemed to be doing alright, though they'd likely need to return to the clearing Glynda had marked as their base camp for the rest of the week for a break soon- Miss Cinarum seemed rather low on Aura.
Team MLIT was much the same- It had been some three hours since they'd all landed and set up their tents in the marked areas, and they'd all been fighting for quite a while. Team DGTL had already returned for lunch- thankfully, since they were still close to Vale, it was rather easy to source food from one of the stores in the agricultural district proper, and they didn't have to subsist on rations.
Team BLOD would… definitely need extraction soon, given that half the members were close to running out of Aura. Hm.
And then- Team RWBY.
Still going strong despite the frankly ridiculous amount of Grimm they'd been killing- how the four of them had managed to entangle themselves into what Glynda could only imagine was the largest population of randomly roaming grimm in this entire sector of the Emerald Forest, she had no idea, but the fact remained that Miss Rose and Miss Xiao Long had barely dipped into a quarter of their reserves despite having seemingly been fighting for nearly two hours now and Miss Belladonna and Miss Schnee were still at a healthy level- even if they'd fallen back into a more supportive role while Miss Rose and Miss Xiao Long tore through just about everything in their path.
Gods, even if they were almost three miles away, Glynda could still hear the thunderous retort of Crescent Rose as it fired those ridiculously oversized artillery shells of hers.
Glynda almost felt bad for the grimm.
Almost .
Still though… why were they heading so far east? They were getting further and further out, and they were running up on the point that they were supposed to come back - so why were they still pushing further and further when they should have already been retreating back to the base camp? Hmm…
Glynda frowned slightly, standing with poise and dignity as she flicked over the remainder of the first year class that she hadn't checked yet- a thoroughly average set of teams who knew their limits and went out in sporadic bursts over the last few hours, retreating after running into anything they couldn't handle safely before heading out again to take care of the threat once they'd recovered enough of their Aura to handle the grimm in question- before looking around the campground and tapping her heel against the packed dirt.
Everyone else had fairly standard eradication scores- not a single Team was below at least a double digit amount of grimm kills racked up, with a few of the more experienced students having managed to hit the thirties, if not forties by way of having found their way to grimm nests. Team JNPR was standing at a remarkable almost sixty kills by now, and Glynda was sure that they could have gotten more if they weren't working at their cautious, conservative pace that allowed them to maximize their use of Aura and ammunition.
Team RWBY was bumping into the triple digits and didn't show any signs of stopping any time soon.
Now, Glynda wasn't normally one to swear but…
What the fuck?
Really, truly, what the fuck . What had Taiyang been feeding his kids- hells below, not even Team CMNE was that dedicated, even if Cinder had been… a bit of a sight to see in a first year class. They had almost as much lethality as Team RWBY, but… well.
Glynda sighed again, pushing her glasses up and frowning as she sounded the general recall alert- bringing back any teams that had just gone out and telling any actively engaged teams to finish up and come back ASAP.
"Truly, that team continues to baffle me beyond measure," Glynda sighed, staring down at her datapad and pursing her lips as she kept track of Team RWBY's movements- it seemed like, in the last few minutes, Miss Xiao Long had decided to fall back a bit, taking a secondary role instead of fighting beside her sister, who… was still going quite strong- to the point that Glynda wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it for herself. Then again, if that dusty old Qrow's stories were right, Miss Rose had been training to fight grimm since she was six . And Miss Xiao Long had started at eight . Contrast to how most people started training for combat school when they were ten, Miss Rose's preternatural endurance and ability to slaughter grimm en mass was… well. Not quite expected , but it at least made sense . "Well… it seems we have a record for highest grimm count today- I'll have to assign them to another part of the forest, deeper in, perhaps…"
She continued keeping an eye out for Team RWBY specifically as everyone else returned slowly- first the teams that hadn't gone far, then the teams that had been actively engaging grimm beforehand, then finally Team JNPR. All four of RWBY's sister Team seemed rather bedraggled, albeit triumphant… and covered in quite a lot of sweat, grime, explosive residue, and dirt.
Silently, Glynda pointed the worst offenders towards the portable shower booths that she'd had delivered over from the city, the water truck behind it chugging merrily as it provided rather lukewarm showers to the returning students.
After another five minutes, Glynda squinted at her datapad- Team RWBY wasn't back yet, but then again… they were three miles out…
She continued sighing and grumbling as she waited rather impatiently, her schedule having been somewhat thrown off by Team RWBY's tardiness. After another ten minutes, she finally saw the first flicker of reds and yellows approaching from the distance, the erstwhile team stumbling back into the clearing in a moderate sprint, disheveled and dirtied and smelling of gunpowder, spent Dust, the acrid scent of dead grimm, and cut grass. They were also all faintly damp, which Glynda chalked up to Miss Schnee having used some Water Dust to get off the worst of the muck they'd likely gotten into.
The only one who looked clean, fresh, and without a single trace of having gone through almost four hours of heavy combat was one Ruby Rose, who was still skipping along merrily with all of her grimm themed accoutrements in place- not a single bone or paint line out of place.
Hm.
"Miss Rose, Schnee, Belladonna, Xiao Long- would you care to explain why you returned almost half an hour after I sent the recall notice- and for that matter, would you care to explain why you went three miles straight east in a path of destruction that netted you a grand total of nearly one hundred and fifty slain grimm?" Glynda asked, raising her eyebrow as she ignored the mutters and gasps from behind her- really. In all honesty, that many grimm wasn't a lot for a longer hunt… but the fact that Team RWBY had killed that many in only a few hours… gods, how were they not exhausted by now? "Congratulations on having the highest kill count and potentially depopulating the entire eastern border of the forest, I suppose."
The red huntress paused, clearing her throat a bit as she drew her shoulders up and almost shrank in on herself from the amount of stares leveled at her team- most curious, some incredulous, and others outright in disbelief.
"W-well… there's… a lot of grimm over there? A-and… um… I don't know why, but they all seem to be heading towards… um… I think it was a ruined city? I saw a sign that said Mountain Glenn…"
Ah. Hm.
Well.
That… was something worth investigating.
"Very well," Glynda nodded, deciding not to show that little spike of surprise that shot through her at Miss Rose's words. "Showers are over there, food over there. We will be having an overall class review in thirty minutes. Step to it!"
"Yes ma'am!"
[Not that it's at all necessary to show, but some people in the comments seemed confused as to how the beds work in this fic, so I figured I'd doodle a thing]

You may notice some familiar fan team names in the chapter.
