Yuanwei roamed the streets, with no trace of Pingguo. He had already inquired about her at the three nearby hospitals, but none had received her tonight. It was getting later, and the temperature was dropping as the hours passed. The young man's worry grew; he had nowhere else to look.
He called his sister again, but she informed him that Pingguo had still not returned. Not knowing where else to look, Yuanwei thought that the young woman might have returned to her apartment. So, he went there. On-site, Yuanwei noticed movement coming from the young woman's apartment. A great relief for him; he had finally found her. He knocked on the door, and it opened before him.
"Oya, do you know how worried I was about you? You're crazy to disappear like that in the cold," the boss exclaimed immediately.
At the same time, the person who opened the door also exclaimed, "Damn, where were you?"
The two young men, facing each other, were shocked to see one another. There, in that place. It had been about three years; since the opening of Yeongwon's "company," that Yuanwei had not seen him. And let's say that the two young men had not parted on good terms. Obviously, animosity took over.
"Yuanwei Hua, what a pleasant surprise! Still chasing after my girlfriend, it seems," Yeongwon began, in a mocking tone.
The interlocutor eyed the man in front of him, with disdain. Yuanwei now understood Pingguo's strange behavior, why she had fled her own apartment. A cockroach had infiltrated it to his utmost despair. Yuanwei would have liked to get rid of it, but his priority at the moment was to find Pingguo and Taiyang. Obviously, Pingguo could not have come here with the baby.
Wisely, Yuanwei chose to beat a retreat without responding to the provocation. But, as a jealous lover, Yeongwon couldn't let this man go after he had come to the apartment at such a late hour. Moreover, Yeongwon had no idea where Pingguo could be.
"Maybe he came to get her things?"
Yuanwei wanted to turn away, but Yeongwon held him by the forearm.
"Where is she, answer me, right now?"
Yuanwei turned around, with renewed strength, he got rid of the grip. With a burning look of rage, and especially disgust, Yuanwei confronted Yeongwon.
"The next time you lay your hand on me, I'll kill you. Is that clear?"
The threat was frightening, as was the tone. Yet, it made Yeongwon laugh; he evidently found the situation particularly exciting. Seeing that glint in Yuanwei Hua's eyes was such a pleasure that he couldn't get enough of it; he had missed it.
"Yuanwei Hua, Yuanwei Hua. You're so cute," complimented Yeongwon, dusting off the young man's jacket. "Look at you, who can control your emotions, letting them express themselves in front of me because I'm your weakness. Isn't that right?"
Yeongwon lowered his arm and took a step closer to bridge the gap between them.
"You thought you were superior to me, but I have something that you don't have and desire more than anything."
"I don't see what you're talking about," Yuanwei replied, in a dry tone.
"Don't play the fool; I know you're not. You and I both know what, but you refuse to give up, don't you?"
Pingguo was undoubtedly the priority, but Yuanwei had no intention of letting Kim Yeongwon's delirium grow further; at the very least, he had to resolve this misunderstanding. Never would Kim Yeongwon be at his level. Never.
"Kim Yeongwon, if you really think you possess something that I don't have in double or more, then you haven't understood anything. You possess nothing, and you will never possess anything if your goal is to be at my level."
"Let me laugh," he laughed, although he began to feel his ego being shaken.
"The only one who refuses to give up here," Yuanwei interrupted, "is you. I remind you that she's fleeing her own apartment because of you, if that's not pathetic."
"Shut up!", plunged Yeongwon into a black rage; he exploded.
Yuanwei Hua gave a crooked smile, and just stepped back to avoid a confrontation; he didn't have time for it. He still had no news of Pingguo and the baby; Yeongwon wasn't worth the trouble of wasting time putting him in his place. He turned his back and left, while Yeongwon continued to rant against him.
Angry, Yeongwon decided to contact his fiancée. But the call went unanswered; Pingguo wasn't responding. And this confirmed the young man's suspicion, which frustrated the ridiculed fiancé even more. Nevertheless, he did nothing. Obviously, reacting now would earn points for Yuanwei Hua. He would find another way.
As for Yuanwei, he resumed his search. The young man found the solution a bit extreme, but Pingguo didn't give him a choice. She had left without informing anyone with a baby in the middle of the night. Since his searches were unsuccessful, Yuanwei planned to entrust them to the relevant authorities. He decided to call the officer Woyin to ask for his help. But as he was on the phone with the officer, a streetlight caught Yuanwei's attention.
"Officer, I'll keep you posted."
"Okay, Mr. Hua, don't forget to do so."
Yuanwei hung up. When he got out of his car, he let out a sigh of relief.
...
Now that the doctor had examined her, Pingguo had to wait for the initial diagnostic results. The young woman got up every two minutes to watch for the doctor's return, then she sat back down. Taiyang had calmed down a bit, but he sometimes cried. Just then, he started crying again, and the young woman was filled with worry. The results were taking too long to arrive, and it worried her even more.
"Little sun, please calm down. You'll get a headache if you keep this up, please calm down."
Pingguo gently rocked the baby to soothe him, but nothing worked. Cornered, and especially overwhelmed by the events, Pingguo burst into tears while trying to calm the baby. Alone in this corridor, the young woman felt the weight of the world on her shoulders. She wanted more than anything to provide a good life for Taiyang, but how could she do that if she couldn't even calm him down during a crisis?
"I'm sorry," she confided, "I'm so useless, forgive me."
Pingguo hugged the baby to her chest, saddened. She felt useless, and perhaps she would remain that way in Taiyang's life. Agnes was probably right, and so was Yuanwei, everyone. The young woman shivered with cold, but her heart was so preoccupied with Taiyang's health that she didn't even notice. Until suddenly, her back warmed up.
"I've already told you to stop crying while holding him; you'll make him melancholic."
That voice. Hearing that voice, feeling that warmth, brought an indescribable relief to Pingguo. Her heart melted on the spot, moved by this unexpected support. She turned around.
"Yuanwei Hua..."
Impulsively, Yuanwei wiped the young woman's face.
"Don't ever do something like that again," he began. "You don't disappear with a child without saying anything; it's dangerous."
Pingguo looked at Yuanwei as if she were living a dream; she was so shaken. She looked at him for a moment with large, teary eyes. She probably wondered if this was reality; her exhaustion was evident.
"Yuanwei Hua, I... I'm so careless; I should have thought to take Taiyang to the hospital. And now because of me, he's suffering."
The young man didn't even let Pingguo finish her sentence. To soothe her great anxiety, Yuanwei took her in his arms. An impulsive, uncontrollable, and incomprehensible gesture. Yuanwei Hua wasn't particularly sensitive or tactile, so acting like this was not at all in his habits. But faced with this face, which he often saw expressing either anger or joy, he was gripped by a strange feeling. He desired to shield Pingguo's distress, to protect her and Taiyang. Slowly, he stroked the back of the young woman's neck as she sobbed.
"I've already told you, it's not your fault. Children get sick, and you did what you had to do when you found out he wasn't feeling well. You went out without a coat in freezing weather to bring him here; do you think a neglectful person would do that?"
"No..."
"Then don't blame yourself for that," Yuanwei reassured her.
The embrace was warm, so comforting that Pingguo completely surrendered to it. In their midst, Taiyang calmed down. His guardian wasn't the only one feeling the pressure released; he, too, needed a collective hug. Yuanwei felt immense relief; perhaps this gesture came from there. They had found them safe and sound, fortunately, Yuanwei had spotted this pediatrics unit at the last moment.
Pingguo looked up. Her eyes met Yuanwei's, and she felt drawn to them. And then, something else caught her attention.
"What am I thinking?"
The smell of his cologne around her because of his jacket, the feeling of his hand on her back. The young woman's heart skipped a beat; the thought of kissing Yuanwei had just struck her. She immediately put some distance between them, but Yuanwei closed the gap, not content to just think about it.
"Oh no..."
For a brief moment, their lips brushed. The warmth on the young woman's lips took her breath away, and instinctively, she took a step back. She didn't know if her boss's mouth had touched hers, but in any case, she convinced herself that she had prevented this madness. The two looked at each other, outraged at each other.
What had just happened? Why had the situation come to this?
Yuanwei couldn't find answers to these questions, and for once, the young man responded to his deep desire rather than his ceased reasoning. This innocent face, this desire to protect her, all of it fueled his action. Somehow, Yuanwei had taken advantage of Pingguo's moment of weakness to get closer to her; although that wasn't his initial intention.
Pingguo stared straight into Yuanwei's eyes, and immediately confusion seized her. Then came regret, and the expression on her face filled Yuanwei with guilt; he had acted wrongly. He never thought he would react like this towards her, in such a selfish and senseless way. Perhaps, after all, Kim Yeongwon's words had affected him more than he would have imagined; perhaps unconsciously, Yuanwei sought to prevent Pingguo from going back to him.
"Pingguo, I..."
Suddenly, Taiyang burst into laughter and let out shrill cries; he seemed to be overflowing with energy again. Pingguo immediately turned her attention to the little one; apparently, she refused to have this conversation for now.
Yuanwei immediately took a seat, a chair away from them.
