CHAPTER SIX
When Shadow woke up, it was to snarling. There were 5 cats outside his den. As he crawled out, he was roughly pushed to the ground. "Look what we have here. The outcast." One of them said, a grey cat with a heavy build and major pottymouth - at least by cat standards - Onyx's sidekick, Pigeonwing. Claws dug into Shadow's shoulder, but he didn't say anything to the pain. Instead, he craned his neck to look up at someone who resembled him.
A cat with a dark black coat, not plum. A cat with bright yellow eyes, shining and glimmering, not dull like his. Onyx looked at his brother. "Step back, Pigeonwing. The coward doesn't have the heart to attack us."
Shadow gasped for breath as Pigeonwing stepped back, but not before sinking his claws a bit deeper as a warning. They were right, he didn't have the heart. "H-how are mother and father?" He asked, his words stumbling slightly. Onyx's ears twitched. "Better without their disappointment of a son. I told you to get out of here. What's wrong with you?"
Shadow looked down, embarrassed. "I was… going to, but I got clawed by a badger yesterday." Onyx only laughed. "As if. You wouldn't be alive if a badger had clawed you."
Yep. that was true too. Shadow looked at the floor as Onyx's muzzle brushed near his ear. His twin, yellow eyes shining, whispered, "You should have died."
Shadow squeezed his eyes shut. He didn't even notice he had been swiped on the muzzle by onyx's claws until pain seared across his snout, and blood rushed down into his mouth as it dripped down his snout. Onyx was glaring now, through slitted yellow eyes. "Don't you know we're supposed to chase rouges away? Get lost. Don't step here again."
Suddenly they both turned as another growl rang out. Shadow's stepped back, hesitating. He had wondered if that growl hadn't been that of a cat, but he had gotten distracted. Whatever the thing in those bushes was, it wasn't a cat.
A large fox slunk out of the undergrowth, to Shadow's horror. Even if they worked together now, three cats were not sufficient to overwhelm a fox of that size. Onyx and Pigeonwing seemed to realize this too, because, before Shaodow could fully grasp what was happening, they had bolted in the opposite direction.
Shadow looked nervously at the fox and stepped back even more. Maybe if he dashed too, the fox would be off his trail - suddenly, with a loud yap, the Fox darted forward. It had come here expecting an easy meal, and that was what it had gotten. Shadow ducked as best as he could under the first swipe, but the fox still managed to leave a nasty tear on his back. Fur, skin, and muscle alike were uprooted as Shadow let out a yelp, dodging out of the way, but not without the cost of blood streaming down his back. Shadow weakly stumbled away, but a bit too late. The fox was pouncing now, pinning him to the ground. Shadow writhed, desperately trying to do anything. The fox bit down on one of his legs with a loud crunch, bone broken. Shadow yowled.
In this case, he was dead. Only miracles could save him, but he didn't believe in those. After all, no one would come to save him…
Shadow's eyes closed slowly, pain rushing to his leg. Just in time, he squinted to see a shape attack the fox, throwing it off him. White fur…?
Maybe, just maybe, someone had come to save him.
