Capítulo 40: Mind Games

Gwendolyn was alerted as she hurriedly turned around and found a gap to look at what she wanted to look at.

It was indeed as she had guessed; she could see a flame ball going towards the ice that held Lex's second dagger.

Gwendolyn narrowed her eyes as she understood everything but was still confused. These Flame Balls weren't that strong, so they definitely wouldn't be able to break the ice, then why did Lex decide to send one Flame Ball there?

Lex smiled as he bent his body slightly and got ready to launch the moment he wanted. He knew he had to do that as to get the dagger before Gwendolyn sealed it again in the Ice.

After all, she wouldn't fall for that same trick twice, and thinking of another plan was a pain in the ass.

Lex's plan was simple for getting the dagger back. He would distract Gwendolyn with several small and weak Flame Balls, so much so that they filled the whole hall. Not just that, whenever one Flame Ball gets destroyed after hitting the snake, one new one would form.

This was so that she didn't focus on the main Flame Ball, which packed dense flames and was very powerful.

But the problem was he couldn't send it directly to the dagger as that would make Gwendolyn suspicious, and then she would do something so that the Flame Ball wouldn't reach the dagger.

For this, Lex used what Gwendolyn had used in starting. He waited until the snake was in the position he wanted and fired the special Flame Ball to a specific spot.

If it had been a weak Flame Ball, it would have been destroyed after hitting the snake, like most Flame Balls were being destroyed.

But it survived the clash and bounced off to the other side, towards the dagger.

Gwendolyn didn't pay much attention in the beginning because she thought it was just another Flame Ball.

As for why he wanted that dagger...

Lex smiled as he launched himself towards the snake; he could have gone and bypassed it, but where's the fun in that?

He brandished the dagger and once again began attacking the snake. The flame balls, as if they were left on autopilot, continued to bombard the snake while Lex attacked the snake from many sides.

He manoeuvred in the air and never stayed in one spot. He was just hitting the head of the snake with flame-covered daggers, but since the head was big, he needed to fly around to attack it.

Gwendolyn shifted her eyes from the dagger that had already been blasted away by the Dense Flame Ball. Although she didn't understand why Lex didn't directly go to retrieve the dagger, she didn't have the time to ponder over such things.

The constant attacks of Lex and the barrages of the flame balls had put the snake and Gwendolyn in a difficult position. Although the defence of the snake was high, it was mostly because Gwendolyn was there to maintain it.

She needed to constantly monitor it and focus on it so it doesn't crumble away. After all, Ice was, in the end, just Ice. It could be slowly be broken, especially if the attacks were flame-based.

Gwendolyn wanted to attack, but Lex was just too agile. She also had to concentrate all of her attention on the snake; otherwise, it would just crumble away, and she couldn't afford that since it would affect her mental state.

Abilities worked in mysterious ways.

This time, though, Gwendolyn wasn't just defending. She was now sure that Lex used his brain the most in battle. The most dangerous thing about Lex wasn't his destructive power but his wits.

As she focused more and more on the snake, she found that Lex struck at the same spots multiple times.

Gwendolyn narrowed her eyes, and this time, she followed the pattern in which Lex was attacking.

She smiled as she found her guess was correct. Every time Lex struck the snake's head, it would be in the same spot. And it was the same every time.

As she closed her eyes and concentrated on those spots, she found them very weak compared to the other part of the snake. Every time Lex struck, he left some flames behind that Gwendolyn didn't pay much attention to at first since they were at random spots.

Now that she thinks about it, the flames were left, so that part doesn't heal itself and remains weak.

Gwendolyn ignored all these since they were at random spots and weren't really affecting the snake in any way.

'Wait!' Gwendolyn once again focused as she noticed something in those spots. She noticed a pattern even in those spots.

Those spots, if joined by imaginary lines, formed two straight and parallel lines. They were in perfect shape.

'Is he planning to shoot two flaming slashes on these two lines to destroy the snake?' Gwendolyn guessed the objective behind Lex's actions.

But she didn't do anything to counter it since she had a feeling something was wrong. Thinking about how Lex had used his wits from the beginning of the battle, Gwendolyn doubted his plan was so simple.

She looked at Lex, who was busy attacking the spots she had already noticed with his full concentration.

Gwendolyn narrowed her eyes as her doubts began to come true for her. She thought, 'Am I falling for a trap?'

Thinking of that, she once again closed her eyes and focused her concentration on the full body of the snake. She began to grit her teeth as the sheer headache she was getting because of that was big.

Still, she persisted and continued to look for anything unusual in the snake's body.

Lex cast a side glance at Gwendolyn and smiled. He thought, 'Good! Good! Get even more confused and doubt yourself. Heh, truth is before you, but you instead doubt it.'

[I hardly believe that. What are you planning, Lex?]

'Hey, what are you saying?'

[Bruh! I can see that you've been playing with that girl from the beginning, so now tell me, what are you planning?]

'You'll have to see that yourself. I'm sure my plan would work, but who knows if she has other things in her arsenal.'
