"You're fucking stalking me?!" I raised my voice as I started my car, eager to get away.
"I don't want you driving while you're distracted," he sounded worried, but the fact that he thought he could dictate any part of my life annoyed me.
"I wouldn't be distracted if I wasn't engaged to a stalker," I hissed back as I placed the phone on speaker and made sure all my doors were locked.
I wasn't worried that Alexander or his men were going to do harm me, but if he managed to stalk me without my knowledge, then anyone could.
"I'm not stalking," he argued.
"Don't act dumb! I'm pretty sure following a defenseless woman around is considered stalking." I wasn't just going to let him win this argument, and he was stalking.
"You are far from defenseless," he was clearly amused by the fact that I had claimed to be defenseless, irritating me even more. I did not want to amuse Alexander Harris, at least not anymore. "You are seated in a bulletproof car with a GPS tracker and a panic button, and those only come into play if the person stalking or attacking you could get through the ten bodyguards your grandfather has assigned to you."
I bit my tongue as I resisted the urge to lash out at him.
He wasn't wrong, the car was a fortress on wheels and Grandpa made sure that I was always protected. I had an odd feeling that after today he would tell me how he was right about placing bodyguards around me.
"I was right, wasn't I?" Alexander confidently asked, making me wonder where that confidence came from.
"How do you know?" my curiosity got the better of me. I knew that asking him would only encourage Alexander.
"It's my responsibility to ensure that my fiancée is safe," he said. "An attack on you is an attack on me."
I felt the blood drain from my face as the realization hit me, the car, the bodyguards, they weren't all Grandpa's.
"Fucking stalker," I hissed.
Of course, he knew where I was at any time I used the car, he was the one who had the GPS installed.
If my hunch was right, the panic button would alert him and my grandfather if I was in any danger.
He was a fucking controlling bastard and I walked into his hands.
"And I may have forgotten to mention that as a safety precaution, your car has cameras all over," he said cockily. "So I might not be around you, but—"
"Seriously?" I didn't let him complete his statement. I was appalled that he would put cameras around my car and that he would be watching them.
"They are for your safety," he said calmly as he tried not to aggravate me any further.
"You already have my location, the panic button would alert you, and I'm fairly certain at this point that half the guards are yours Alexander," I shouted over the phone, pissed off at the invasion of my privacy.
"All I want is to keep you safe," he reminded me, and I did appreciate that, but the cameras were too much.
"And I can handle myself, I'm not eighteen anymore!" I answered back.
"Lilith," he groaned. "Lili, please, listen to me."
Fuck, I hated it when he called me that, it reminded me of a time that deserved to remain in the past, a version of us that I had buried deep down.
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and relaxed.
Arguing with him would get me nowhere and it would only unnecessarily prolong this conversation. I just wanted it over with and I wanted to go home.
"I'm certain there is a reason as to why you called, Alexander," I told him as I kept my voice steady.
"There is," he said, choosing to move on with the topic. "As you know, news of our engagement has been making waves all over."
"I honestly didn't know." I really didn't.
"Are you telling me that a woman in her mid-twenties doesn't check social media? Or that someone who is supposed to be the heir to one of the largest conglomerates in the country does not keep herself updated with the news?"
"I really don't," I shrugged. "I've been avoiding the Lilibeth account since I'm sure my ex is blowing it up and I really haven't had the time to open my real one."
"And the girls?" he asked, referring to my two best friends, Jade and Riley, whom I had abandoned when I chose a life with Jason.
"They probably hate me," I admitted as I looked down at my hands.
"They don't," his words sounded like a promise. But how could he know, last I checked those two hated him.
"How would you know that?" I questioned him. "I don't need you to give me false hope."
"But I'm not," he sounded amused, which annoyed me even more. "After you left all the mommas and papas thought the path was clear and decided to send their children after me. Your friends are loyal, so I gave them nice cushy jobs in my company, plus one of them is actually my cousin, remember?"
I smirked when he said mommas and papas, hearing Alexander speak informally was quite rare.
"So you're in contact with them?" I dared to ask the obvious.
"I am, and you'll need them since I want you to attend a party with me," he informed me.
"What kind?" I asked.
"A small get-together of the who's who of society, it's a masquerade, so you don't need to be worried about them seeing your face," he thought of everything, I couldn't help but be impressed. "I'll pick you up at seven in the evening on Friday."
With that, he ended the call, leaving the car a little bit too quiet for my taste.
'I had my card sent to your house, don't even try to refuse,' I frowned at the message.
Well if he was intruding in my life like this then the least I could do was to enjoy his money, he was rich enough that a small shopping trip wouldn't even hurt.
