Gotham, a city that's chaotic wherever it might appear, provided a few non-native cats the opportunity to slip in undetected.
Upon entering the city, the group of cats, represented by Batman, discovered advanced technologies surpassing those in the real Gotham. Ubiquitous cat-operated hovering vehicles, floating CCTV cameras, and wall-mounted automated weaponry were all a sight to behold for these newly arrived felines.
Among them, the blue-eyed black cat walking on the side of the group seemed lost in thought, evidently intrigued by the city's layout. Constantine was carefully surveying the street environment, showing a particular interest in specific neighborhoods, even in cat form. Victor, focusing more on the task at hand, suddenly shouted, pointing ahead, and asked, "What's that over there?"
The leading orange cat immediately raised its head alertly. His super vision pierced the fog, revealing a huge tower hidden behind. Meanwhile, Batman had bounded onto a rooftop with a few swift leaps using awnings and roof edges.
Gazing into the distance, he saw the familiar Tower of Heaven. Thus, the cats scrambled up onto the roof, planning to quickly get there and remove Shearer.
Just then, a disturbance broke out in the distance. The leading orange cat immediately turned around to look. He said, "Damn! There seems to be a robbery over there. I have to go check it out!"
Saying so, he tensed his body, took a leap, and landed on the roof of the opposite building. Using his sharp claws, he clenched on the edge of the roof, then with a jerk, he leaped onto the rooftop. Just as he prepared to fly, he noticed a camera nearby. Clark hesitated for a moment, then decided to carry on running towards the scene.
Constantine called out to him, but Clark didn't respond. Knowing Clark's character, Batman didn't say anything and followed after him. Victor and Constantine had no choice but to do the same.
On reaching the crime scene, Clark saw that this was not merely a robbery. The body of a cat lay by the bank's door. Clark's super vision allowed him to see every detail at the scene.
The cat's body looked odd; it was soaked wet, looking as though it had drowned, but it wasn't raining, and there was no pond or waterhole nearby. A drowned cat lay in the middle of a dry street.
Police cats surrounded the scene - some setting up the police tape, some inspecting the body, others jotting down notes. With several police cars parked around the body, Clark's attention was suddenly drawn to a cat next to the police cars.
This cat wore a special ring on its tail, seemingly as proof of identity. Its gear was more technologically advanced than the others' too. It was a long-haired cat, pure white in color - in Gotham's gloomy weather, it seemed to be glowing.
Bat Cat, stepping forward, unsheathed his claws in surprise at the sight of the corpse, only to retract them soon. Standing on the rooftop, he observed the scene below, trying to piece together the current situation.
Just as the cats decided not to act rashly, alarm sirens suddenly blared from the floating cameras. Instantly, all the police cats looked up at the roof where the cats were. The white cat issued orders, and all weapons were aimed here. As lasers were fired, Clark activated his energy field, causing the bullets and lasers to hover mid-air. Bat Cat turned, flicked his tail, and said, "Move!"
The cats leaped swiftly across roofs, dodging bullets streaming continuously from numerous cameras and auto-weapons. Clark occasionally turned back and retaliated with heat vision. Soon, their faces appeared on the wanted list.
A photo of Clark discharging heat vision from his eyes was pinned on a felt board with a "pop." Besides it, linked by threads, were photos of a blue-eyed black cat, a golden cat, and a blue cat - evidently, they were Batman and his team.
A black cat slowly retreated in front of the felt board, his bright blue eyes locked onto the photos.
Another black cat lay on the couch behind him, opening his eyes slightly, revealing a pair of gray, foggy vertical pupils.
"You've said once I adjust the drone patrol routes as per your instructions, there wouldn't be any criminals able to commit crimes, and no more chaos," the blue-eyed black cat turned to the gray-eyed black cat and continued, "Professor Shearer, what's happening now?"
The cat named Shearer, lying on the couch, stretched lazily, stood up from the couch, and started to scratch the carpet with his claws. He said while scratching, "Don't fret, you're still Bat Cat, ruler of this city. Nobody could escape your gaze."
"Spotting crimes is crucial. Now the entire city is under your surveillance. What are you still afraid of?"
"I just don't want any criminals to be able to commit crimes," replied the black cat called Bat Cat. He added, "This is not enough, Professor Shearer. You've told me before that you are capable of ending all evil. Adjusting patrol routes was only the first step. Now it's time for you to tell me the second one. Don't forget our deal."
"Don't you want to know how that pitiful bank manager died, and what's the deal with these unfamiliar outsider cats?" asked Shearer.
"I've already issued a warrant for their arrest." The black cat moved his paw, approaching the floor-to-ceiling window. He looked over the city - the floating CCTV cameras seemed like his eyes, surveilling every corner. He said, "I can see every cat here. No criminal can escape."
"Yes, Bat Cat, your revenge is almost complete. Gotham is about to become the city with the best public security worldwide. No criminal would dare to commit any crime here," Shearer replied but remained behind Bat Cat instead of standing next to him.
"If that's the case, why not think of this murder that occurred in front of the bank as the last darkness before dawn? Only those who have experienced darkness can truly appreciate the light, don't you agree?"
Bat Cat turned and looked into the eyes of Shiller, the cat, replying, "What you say makes sense. From now on, each time I relish in the joy of success, I will remember this last criminal act. Given all this, I'll personally catch the criminal and put him in the Batcave to serve as a reminder of the darkness I overcame."
He turned to leave the room. Shiller moved back to the sofa-cat bed and flipped over, scratching at the edge of the couch with his claws. He glanced at the security cameras around the room and then curled up as if nothing were amiss, falling asleep.
Meanwhile, the Cat Squad, led by Batman, was frantically running amok in Gotham City, as invasive surveillance cameras and automatic weapons made it impossible for them to hide.
Seemingly, someone noticed they were trying to get closer to the high tower in the city center. All the weapons were pushing them away from the downtown area.
"This won't do! We can't keep going like this!" Clark yelled out, "I can take out all these weapons, let's make a direct rush for it!"
"You better not." Constantine jumped around and yelled, "Do you want to recreate the explosion from last time? If you channel too much power, the dreamworld might shatter and Shiller's soul will be in danger."
Batman stopped on the edge of a tall building. The night breeze caused his fur to flutter. His sharp eyes scanned around and then paused on a sewer manhole.
"We go into the sewer." He commanded, "The person monitoring the city can't possibly have perfect surveillance over all the drain systems. We need to find a place to hide first."
As he spoke, he made a leap, twisted his body in mid-air to dodge incoming bullets, and landed with a 'thud' on a sunshade. Constantine and Victor jumped down and narrowly missed the bullets, but Clark protected them with a force field.
The cats scrambled quickly to the manhole. Batman extended a claw that sprang out instantly, caught the edge of the sewer opening, and with a slight exertion of force, the manhole cover was lifted with a 'bang'.
The cats jumped in swiftly, Clark covered the manhole and twisted it to make sure everything looked undisturbed from the outside.
In the sewer, there were some cameras. But, as Batman predicted, they only monitored the wide main drains. The smaller branches were unseen, without cameras or weapons.
"What's going on? Who's controlling the city?" Victor shook his paw to clean the water off, rubbed it on the wall, and asked.
"I don't know." Batman responded, but Constantine threw him a glance, as if he had a guess. He tactfully mentioned, "Gotham has some arcane properties we all don't know about. This city has many secrets. Irrespective of the city, there always will be a source of chaos."
What he said was a bit ambiguous, so Victor and Clark had trouble understanding. Victor chimed in, "All I know is, we can't keep running like this. We need to find a way to fight back and find where Shiller is located."
"A while ago, I was examining the equipment that Clark had taken down, the surveillance cameras and automated weapons. The internal structure isn't too complex, I should be able to hack into it. And, I can use their broken components to construct a weapon."
"Can you make a Freeze Gun?" Batman turned and asked him.
"I can, but it'll be a hassle. We have to acquire all the chemical ingredients on our own. If we want to do it, we need a base that we can be sure is safe. We cannot be disturbed during the process, or we might fail."
"Then let's establish our base here." Batman spoke at a quick pace, "The vehicles above ground have components I can use. I can assemble gears suitable for a cat's size, right here."
"Alright, you guys are talented." Constantine flicked his tail and said, "Later, I'll try the demon summoning ritual here. If it works, great. If not, I'll try some simple magic."
Just as the group was moving along a branch tunnel, Clark suddenly stopped. He straightened his ears and then exclaimed, "Hold on, there are footsteps coming from ahead. Someone...no, a cat is coming."
Everyone immediately formed a defensive formation. A cat figure appeared around the corner, and the light falling from the crack in the manhole above illuminated its shadow. The shadow reflected on the wall looked terrifying.
Shortly after, the figure appeared in front of them. Constantine yelped first, "What is this thing?!!"
The cat was also startled, letting out a deep growl, arched its back and stepped back a little. Its tail hairs all puffed up.
It wasn't surprising for Constantine to be startled. The cat in front of them looked like a monster. Not only did it possess characteristics of a cat, its claws, skin, and body size resembled that of a crocodile.
