Capítulo 24: Sorcerer's Revelation

Karyan placed the letter back on his desk. "Well, I didn't expect him to reply back, but I was expecting the spirit to be weaker."

He let out a long sigh, rubbing his eyes with one hand and tapping his fingers with the other.

"Barbara is still not here. I think I should take matters into my own hands now."

*Knock* *knock*

"Lady Victoria, what are you doing here?"

"I'm sorry for barging into your room without notice," she lowered her head. "But I have some information about your mother."

Karyan grabbed the letter and put it back into the drawer; no risks could've been taken.

In these four months, he was consoling Victoria about her loss, and Victoria was trying her best to be his mother figure.

He didn't need it, but having at least one ally on his side wouldn't kill him.

"Yes?!" He stood up and walked closer, trying to close the door.

Victoria sat on the edge of the bed and lowered her voice, whispering, "the day Barbara went to the court, there was a carriage following her."

"The carriage?" Karyan furrowed his eyebrows.

"Yes."

"Do you know to whom this carriage belonged to?"

"It belongs to the house Venlo, and they are close to your grandfather."

Karyan paused; all the possibilities in his head were now as clear as crystal in the daylight.

"Mateo sold Barbara…"

"Yes, I think so," Victoria confirmed slowly.

"That son of a bi-" he clenched his jaw.

"There's no other way for you to get your magic back."

"I know…"

"But why would he prevent you from that?"

"I need to look into it deeper."

"You're just a child, Karyan. I believe that your time will come. You should be more worried about school, toys, and what you will be eating tomorrow," Victoria tried to cheer him up.

But even if she was right, Karyan wasn't five years old, at least mentally.

If only she knew that the boy standing in front of her was the famous serpent master, she would be looking at him from a different perspective.

But he couldn't tell this to her, to no one.

The minute someone finds out that he's the real Karyan, it will be over for him. And all these plans and schemes for revenge would be a waste of time.

Karyan needed something more than trust, someone who would be willing to die for him to keep him safe.

And Barbara was one of those people, but she was secretly sold. 'But why? Why so soon?'

It's that Karyan couldn't understand it well.

It wasn't that Barbara was on his way to distract him from doing his shit or accomplishing something, unless… 'Barbara was a bait!'

'If he didn't believe that Maiko's son was the real Karyan, he needed to see if the real one would appear in front of him, because he probably knew…'

Panic stabbed Karyan's throat. 'Was there a possibility for him to look into Barbara's memories? He couldn't, no way… unless he used a sorcerer for that… a sorcerer that…'

Karyan's heart raced like a drum in his chest, each beat clouding his vision with a hazy blur.

Forced against his intentions, he staggered backward, pushing the chair.

"He knew my plan all along…" he muttered.

"What plan? Karyan, breathe!" Victoria raised her voice as she grabbed the boy into her arms who was losing his balance.

"Please, can you hear me?"

Victoria's voice was like an echo in his mind, blurry and fading.

All he could think was how he trapped himself into Mateo's cage. 'If after my death, Mateo saw Barbara's memories, he knows what I told her…'

"Karyan!" The voice shouted louder, "Karyan!" Victoria continued.

Karyan struggled to regain composure, his mind racing with the weight of unforeseen consequences. Victoria's concerned voice echoed, but his thoughts were consumed by the realization that Mateo might have outsmarted him.

In the haze of panic, Karyan grappled with the consequences of his actions, questioning the trust he had placed in those around him before.

As Victoria desperately called his name, his eyes opened.

"I need to escape from here."

"What?"

"Lady Victoria, please help me to escape from this mansion."

"But where will you go? Are you out of your mind, child? You have everything here, food, clothes, roof under your head…"

It wasn't about the comfortable things in this mansion for him, but his own safety.

If Mateo saw everything in Barbara's memories, then he definitely knew about his rebirth. 'Then why act so dramatically when Maiko's son died? Was he also confused?'

"I can't help you to leave, I'm sorry. I will not allow a child to die outside."

"It's alright."

"I know you're up to something, don't leave," she demanded.

"Please, Lady Victoria, do me a favour."

"What favour?"

"I need information about all the sorcerers that had ever crossed the border in this country, especially five years ago."

"Thi-this…" her voice stuttered, "how would a child know something like this?"

Karyan's dark red eyes glared at her, "please."
