Dark clouds eclipsed the moon, with occasional thunder rumbling across the skies. The wind grew increasingly fierce late into the night, sending the trees swaying precariously and the promotional signs skidding and rolling across the desolate street. People were either taking shelter inside the buildings, or bracing through the wind in a hurry to return home. 

Due to the flashes of lightning, no one noticed when a thin streak of light whizzed through overhead, covering the distance of half the city in a few short seconds. As though finding its target, the light streak abruptly took a dive, heading straight toward one of the floor-to-ceiling windows of a high-rise apartment unit in the city center.
