Chapter 10
"What do I get if I tell you?" The ghost asked Kael.
Kael could not believe his ears. Was this ghost trying to strike a deal with him? Maybe he was a scammer? But looking at the clothes he wore, although outdated, Kael was sure this ghost was a noble or had been a noble when he was alive.
"Seriously?" Kael asked the ghost.
"I can't help you without knowing what I get in return." The ghost told him.
Kael sighed. So his only companion was a ghost and he was getting annoyed with said ghost already. He still had no idea what the ghost's name was but if the ghost continued this way he wouldn't find out without striking a deal.
"What is it that you want?" Kael asked him.
"What do you want to give me?"
A vein pulsed in Kael's head due to how irritating he found the ghost. Did he have an issue with being straightforward?
"I can't give you something until you tell me what you want," Kael told him.
"Well if you can't think of anything then that's bad. I can't help you."
"I just want to know the year."
"I know, but I can't trade information without getting something in return. That's how it's normally done right?" The ghost asked him.
Kael had no idea in what year one asks for the year and the other person requests something first before answering. It's the year. It shouldn't be so hard to answer that right?
"Then what the….what do you want in order for me to know what year it is?" Kael asked the ghost who gave him a dumb stare.
"You really can't think of anything to offer me?" The ghost asked him.
Kael took a deep breath to control his emotions. He was highly irritated with the ghost at the moment. He even looked younger than Kael and he was speaking to him like Kael was younger.
"What's your name?" Kael asked him.
He thought maybe the ghost would also ask for something in return like before but Kael was surprised when the ghost answered him.
"George."
At least, there was no point in calling George, 'the ghost' anymore. Kael thought to himself. He should have done that from the beginning.
"George, I'm in a weird situation right now and I need your help. I just want to know what year it is okay?" Kael asked George, who shrugged his shoulders.
"It's not my fault you don't know what year it is. Not that I can blame you, I watched you trying to kill your brother in the garden in the presence of an audience. That was a dumb move by the way. I wouldn't expect you to know the year." George looked at Kael from head to toe with a judgemental gaze before continuing. "You are dumb aren't you?"
Kael was at a loss for words. He had never met a ghost as infuriating as George and also as disrespectful as George.
"You know I'm older than you right?" Kael asked him.
"I don't see how that's an accomplishment. For someone who doesn't even know the year, who cares if you are older? And besides I'm older than you if you count the decades I've been dead. I was also born before you, I just died young." George said to Kael.
Kael paused. He should not have referred to age or seniority. It was obvious George was older than him. He had also come from a different time. His clothes were different..older and out of fashion.
"I'm sorry. But can you please tell me what year this is? I mean…just some moments ago, I was older. I was in a hall…I..just tell me the year. Please." Kael said.
George tsked. "So you really have mental issues? I should have listened to the maids but it's not every time a ghost gets to see people who can see them..."
"The year, please," Kael called out to George, interrupting him.
"I was getting to that. It's the sixteenth year, after King Adler's reign." George told him.
Kael paused in shock. How was it possible? He was sure he had passed the sixteenth year. It was like he had gone back in time. But that wasn't possible. George mistook Kael's confusion for ignorance.
"Don't tell me you have no idea who King Adler is now." George groaned.
Kael ignored him. Everyone knew who King Adler was. It was during his reign that the magical Kingdom of Alvara became recognised for what it is today. He had been a powerful king and after his death, everyone used it to reference the year signifying how much he had impacted the kingdom.
But that was the least of Kael's worries. He tried to understand what was happening. Perhaps everything that had happened with Cecilia and his friends had been a dream and this is real life? But how was it possible?
"What was I doing before I tried killing my brother?" Kael asked George.
"I have no idea what you were doing. I only saw you in the garden with a book and the next thing I knew, you collapsed. I was shocked by your fall though. I still don't understand how you survived. Perhaps that's why you are behaving strangely…."
Kael turned George out. If there was one thing he was coming to understand, it was that George loved talking and if Kael gave him the opportunity, George would talk for a long time without stopping.
Kael tried to remember where he had been and why he had been there. He closed his eyes as he tried to picture anything that would help him remember.
Before waking up to see his brother, he had perceived Lillie's. The air was cool and he was sure he heard the faint sound of water rushing. There was only one place that had Lilies. George was right. Kael had been in the garden but what was he doing there?
Kael tried to remember. He thought hard. What book had he been holding before waking up? He tried to remember but his memories were foggy. The harder he tried, the more his headache and so he gave up trying to remember.
He lay down on the floor with his arms over his eyes as he tried to make sense of his current situation. What exactly was happening?
Was it possible that he had come to the past? He had gone back in time? But he did not know any spell that could take one back in time. There was only one way to find out if he had gone back in time.
